TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mask-clad Muslims circled Islam’s holiest site along socially distanced paths on Sunday, as Saudi authorities partially resumed the year-round umrah pilgrimage amid extensive health precautions after seven-month coronavirus hiatus.

Thousands of worshippers entered the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Mecca in batches to perform the ritual of circling the sacred Kaaba, a cubic structure towards which Muslims around the world pray, AFP wrote.

The umrah, the pilgrimage that can be undertaken at any time, usually attracts millions of Muslims from across the globe each year but it was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It will be revived in three phases, with Saudi Hajj Minister Mohammad Benten saying last week that 6,000 pilgrims per day will be allowed in the first stage to perform the umrah “meticulously and within a specified period of time”.

A raft of precautions have been adopted to ward off any outbreaks during the umrah, according to state media.

The revered Black Stone in the eastern corner of the Kaaba – which it is customary but not mandatory to touch during the pilgrimage – will be out of reach, while the Grand Mosque will be sterilized before and after each group of worshippers.

Each group of 20 or 25 pilgrims will be accompanied by a health worker and medical teams will be on the ground in case of an emergency, Benten said.

Under the second stage from October 18, the number of umrah pilgrims will be increased to 15,000 per day, with a maximum of 40,000 people, including pilgrims and other worshippers, allowed to perform prayers at the mosque.

Visitors from abroad will be permitted in the third stage from November 1, when capacity will be raised to 20,000 and 60,000, respectively.

The decision to resume the pilgrimage was in response to the “aspirations of Muslims home and abroad” to perform the ritual and visit the holy sites, the interior ministry said last month.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior Saudi Arabia official urged more than one million Muslims intending to perform the Hajj to delay making plans this year in comments suggesting the pilgrimage could be canceled due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

In February, the kingdom took the extraordinary decision to close off the holy cities of Mecca and Medina to foreigners over the virus, a step which wasn’t taken even during the 1918 flu epidemic that killed tens of millions worldwide, The Associated Press reported.

Restrictions have tightened in the kingdom as it grapples with over 1,500 confirmed cases of the new virus. The kingdom has reported 10 deaths so far. The Middle East has more than 71,000 confirmed cases of the virus, most of those in Iran, and over 3,300 deaths.

“The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is prepared to secure the safety of all Muslims and nationals,” Saudi Hajj and Umrah Minister Muhammad Saleh bin Taher Banten told state television. “That’s why we have requested from all Muslims around the world to hold onto signing any agreements (with tour operators) until we have a clear vision.”

He spoke as the sound of crickets echoed in the background late Tuesday night at the Grand Mosque of Mecca, which normally draws thousands of worshippers throughout the day and night, circling it and praying toward it.

Saudi Arabia has barred people from entering or exiting three major cities, including Mecca and Medina, and imposed a nighttime curfew across the country. Like other countries around the world and in the Middle East, the kingdom also suspended all inbound and outbound commercial flights.

Each year, up to two million Muslims perform the Hajj, a physically demanding and often costly pilgrimage that draws the faithful from around the world. The Hajj, required of all able-bodied Muslims to perform once in their lifetime, is seen as a chance to wipe clean past sins and bring about greater humility and unity among Muslims.

Standing in Mecca in front of the Kaaba that Muslims pray toward five times daily, Banten also said the kingdom was already providing care for 1,200 pilgrims stuck in the holy city due to global travel restrictions. A number of them are being quarantined in hotels in Mecca, he said.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency cited Banten’s remarks in stories early Wednesday, saying that Muslims should “be patient” in making their plans for the Hajj. The pilgrimage was expected to begin in late July this year.

The kingdom’s Al Saud ruling family stakes its legitimacy in this oil-rich nation on overseeing and protecting the Hajj sites. Saudi King Salman, whose country is presiding over the Group of 20 nations this year, has said his government will cover the costs treatment of all coronavirus patients in the country, including visitors, foreign residents and those residing illegally.

We have been in Saudi Arabia for 20 days now. I can feel the presence of other pilgrims in the soft breeze of their breath that has filled the air; the endless rows of pilgrims who are standing side by side and are praying in one direction has created a beautiful view.

In addition to this indescribable spiritual feeling that has filled the place, one other thing that catch our eyes is the different treatment that the Iranians receive this year. This new treatment has particularly surprised the Iranians who have been on Haj Pilgrimage before.

Up to now, the Saudi officers’ behavior toward Iranians has been very different from previous years. Most of people who have witnessed this different behavior over the last 20 days believe that this new attitude is a reaction to the power of Iran and the confidence that it has displayed in dealing with regional issues.

Capturing the American drone, seizing the British ship in Persian Gulf, and other numerous achievements of Iran in the region have had a great influence on Saudis and they have come to better understand a new reality called “the powerful Iran.”

Here, the subject of Iran’s power in the region come up in every conversation we have with Mecca residents or other Muslims. It seems that Iran’s resistance toward Americans has not only made Iranians proud, but it has also made other Muslims feel great joy and pride.

Both Shi’ite and Sunni Yemeni Muslims treat us with great respect and call us brothers. Other Muslims from Indonesia, Palestine Bangladesh and other countries show the same intimate and kind behavior toward us.

In one of the Congregational Prayers (jama’ah) we went to, a Palestinian Sunni man was standing next to me in the Maghrib prayer (sunset prayer); when I told him that I was Iranian, he put his hand on his heart and told me in Arabic, “your place is in our hearts.”

Obviously, this level of respect and admiration is rooted in the power of the Islamic Republic and the firm stance it has taken toward its enemies; a position that we have to keep maintaining. Haj Pilgrimage is a good opportunity to assess the outcome of the confident and successful policies that we have taken both in national and international arenas.

The Leader made the comment while addressing a host of local officials in charge of the Hajj pilgrimage on Wednesday.

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

“The creation of unity is a political move. Defending and supporting the Palestinian nation and the oppressed in the Muslim world like in Yemen is a political move. Defending the oppressed fully conforms to Islamic teachings and is a [religious] duty. Disavowal of pagans is a duty, too. All of these are stipulated in religion,” said Ayatollah Khamenei.

He then drew a comparison between “religious” political moves and “non-religious, diabolical” ones.

The Leader said an example of non-religious political moves is when some say pilgrims should not express their protest at the U.S. and should not express their disavowal of pagans during Hajj rituals.

The Leader underlined that Hajj is a social factor which contributes to unity and brotherhood, and at the same time, is a show of morality.

The Leader further noted that the Saudi government is duty-bound to respect and ensure the safety and dignity of Hajj pilgrims.

“Those who are in charge of the Hajj pilgrimage, shoulder heavy responsibilities,” said the Leader.

“Among their (officials) duties is to ensure the security of pilgrims, but they shouldn’t create a police state. They should preserve pilgrims’ respect and dignity,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

In September 2015, a deadly human crush occurred during Hajj rituals in Mina, near Mecca.
