TEHRAN (Iran News) –Director General of Islamic Chamber Research and Information Center of Iran (ICRIC) Mr. Mohammad Reza Karbasi in meeting with an auditing team from Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) said that Iran’s exports to Malaysia comparing to its imports is very insignificant and export of halal food can be an appropriate capacity for solving this problem.

In the meeting, Karbasi pointed to the imports of Iran from Malaysia last year which was $565m, adding that the value of Iran’s exports to Malaysia in the same period was just $82m while potentials of Iran’s food industries and other Iranian exporting products are higher than this amount and it is possible to balance the trade between Tehran and Kuala Lumpur with using the exporting opportunities for halal food.

He noted that neighboring countries of Iran have not made most of Iran’s absence in Malaysia’s market. He invited all active Iranian companies in the field of food industries to join the ICRIC and use its special services for exports to Islamic countries, adding that it will be good if Malaysian officials provide the ground for developing exports to Malaysia’s market either those products which need to have halal certificates or other required products of the country.

Karbasi reiterated that no non-halal product is produced in Iran or imported, adding that countries with non-Muslim minorities like Malaysia can take advantage of this capacity and its field studies will cost very low.

He then noted that ICRIC uses all standards approved by SMIIC which is affiliated to the OIC in halal auditing processes and controlling halal.

Meanwhile JAKIM’s representative Bint Hamza, for his part, termed positive the cooperation with the ICRIC and welcomed cooperation for visiting some Iranian dairy-producing companies.

He then pointed to some standards which should be observed in Malaysia especially in the halal sector and in slaughtering.

He reiterated that despite the presence of different community and population in the country like Chinese and Indians and Malaysia Government insists on import of halal products and it should also be healthy and meet the demands of the Muslim community in the country.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Rouhani plans to leave Tehran for the Malaysian capital later this week to participate in the KL Summit 2019 and hold talks with senior officials of the Southeast Asian country.

The summit will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from December 18 to 21.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country’s embassy in Kuala Lumpur is doing its best to solve banking issues in Malaysia considered for Iranian nationals by some financial institutions.

Abbas Mousavi made the remarks on Thursday in reaction to reports denoting that banks in Malaysia were closing the accounts of Iranian individuals and companies, in what is believed to be a measure linked to sanctions imposed by Washington against Tehran after the former left the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Press TV reported.

Since quitting the JCPOA last year, US President Donald Trump has been running what he refers to as a “maximum pressure” campaign, which seeks to pressure Iran into negotiating a new deal that addresses its missile program and regional influence.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mousavi said, “Unfortunately, under the influence of the United States economic terrorism, some Malaysian banks have considered restrictions for opening accounts and providing services to Iranian nationals.”

“Our country’s embassy in Malaysia is in talks with Malaysian state institutions and banking officials … and various rounds of talks have been held with relevant Malaysian officials with the main topic on the agenda of those talks being to find a solution to this problem,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman added.

Mousavi also expressed hope that the “friendly country of Malaysia” will adopt measures based on goodwill as well as its clear stance against unilateral sanctions to find solutions for banking issues in Malaysia directing Iranian accounts.

These are forced banking issues in Malaysia

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Wednesday told reporters the country was being forced to “make it difficult” for Iranians to live normal lives in the country, Reuters reported.

Nearly a dozen affected people told Reuters that US sanctions are having far-reaching effects on citizens of the Islamic Republic.

“Our ties are very good with Tehran, but we face some very strong pressures from certain quarters, which you may guess,” Mahathir Mohamad said, without naming where the pressure was coming from.

“We are forced to do this because if we don’t, they will close our banks abroad. It’s a kind of bullying by very powerful people.”

The affected Iranians and one embassy official said there were “mass closures” in the Southeast Asian country in recent months.

He said it did not mean Malaysia was “helping” stifle the movement of Iranians here, reiterating that the country was forced to take the action.

Trump announced on September 20 that his country has imposed sanctions on Iran’s Central Bank in the latest round of Washington’s anti-Iran measures, adding that sanctions imposed on Iran’s Central Bank were the highest sanctions ever imposed on a foreign country by Washington.

In reaction, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the US sanctions on the Central Bank clearly showed Washington’s “desperate approach” toward the Islamic Republic.

“The new sanctions are aimed at blocking Iran’s international transactions and its access to food and medicine. This move is unacceptable and dangerous,” Zarif added.

The banks were being “more Catholic than the Pope”, said university lecturer Behrang Samadi, who is among an estimated 10,000 Iranians living in Malaysia. He learnt in August that his bank, CIMB, would close his 14-year-old account.

“In Western countries, there is no problem opening bank accounts,” he added. “They are only sensitive about money transfers, especially in big amounts.”

Samadi said he withdrew his money soon after the bank warned him of the closure within a month’s time, although he was still able to access his account online on Sunday.

Washington imposed sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program late last year, but Malaysia has maintained good diplomatic ties with Tehran.

It was not clear if the account closures were linked to the tracking of a tanker of Iranian fuel oil off Malaysia this year, a development that annoyed the United States.

The US State Department did not respond to a request for comment, Reuters said.

Many Iranians said they knew of dozens of compatriots who had received notices from CIMB and RHB Bank.

“We regret to inform (you) that we are unable to continue the banking relationship,” CIMB said in identical notices reviewed by Reuters.

The banks did not state a reason, but some individuals said bank officials attributed the move to tighter scrutiny after the sanctions.

CIMB and RHB declined to comment. Malaysia’s Central Bank directed queries to the Association of Banks in Malaysia, which declined to comment.

Such matters depended on individual banks’ own risk appetite and assessment, the central bank said this month in an email response to one Iranian’s complaint that was viewed by Reuters.

Iran’s Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said it was working to resolve the banking issues.

“We hope that by goodwill and cooperation of the Malaysian officials, the negotiations will yield a positive result,” it told Reuters in an email last week, adding that Iranian companies had also been affected.

“The United States is engaged in economic war against the Iranian people. It won’t be possible for us to engage with US unless they stop imposing a war, engaging in economic terrorism,” Mohammad Zarif told reporters on Thursday after speaking at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies in the Malaysian capital.

“If they want to come back to the room, there is a ticket, and that ticket is to observe the agreement,” he said, referring to the 2015 nuclear deal signed by Iran and world powers.

Zarif said Iran does not want to “meet for the sake of meeting”.

“The basic principle of civilized world is that you do not negotiate with terrorists,” said Zarif.

“If they want to negotiate, they have to abandon terrorism.”

Earlier at the forum, Zarif alluded to Trump as a person who believes building real estate will solve problems.

“I don’t want to bash anybody, but the mentality that wants to buy Greenland looks at every international development in terms of real estate … believes that by building real estate property, you solve the problem,” said Zarif.

Iran’s top diplomat made no comments in Kuala Lumpur about his Biarritz meeting with Macron.

At the security forum on Thursday, Zarif also warned that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) armed group remains a threat even after losing its territories.

“ISIS became a non-state actor with important role in international affairs and that is why it was important to defeat ISIS and that is why Iran participated actively … in Syria and Iraq,” Zarif said.

“We are happy that the territorial ISIS has been defeated, but the ISIS has not been defeated and we need to be very concerned and cognitive of this fact and continue to be united in the face of this threat,” said Zarif.

During his visit, Zarif also met Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and held talks with Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah.

Saifuddin posted a video on social media showing him welcoming Zarif and Ambassador Marzieh Afkham, Iran’s first female ambassador since 1979 who represents Tehran in Kuala Lumpur.

Zarif praised Mahathir, saying he has “deep respect” for the Malaysian prime minister “for the role he played in developing the Muslim world”.

Zarif later paid a courtesy call to Mahathir at his office in the administrative capital of Putrajaya where he was warmly welcomed.

“Today I received His Excellency Dr Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran at my office in Putrajaya. We discussed several issues of mutual interest as well as improving bilateral ties between our two countries,” said Mahathir on Twitter.

Meanwhile Zarif said Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir is going to visit Iran soon.

Zarif, who has travelled to Kuala Lumpur in the final leg of a three-nation tour of Asia, said that the Malaysian prime minister is scheduled to pay a visit to Iran.

“We’ll be expecting Mr. Mahathir in Iran in the near future,” Zarif told IRIB.

Commenting on the purpose of his visit to Malaysia, the Iranian foreign minister said, “We have very good relations with Malaysia and it was necessary to hold consultations with the Malaysians friends about the bilateral relations, regional cooperation, and the Islamic world cooperation.”

“Moreover, the two countries are involved in extensive talks on various issues, particularly cooperation in the Islamic world,” he added.

“Iran and Malaysia, as two major and advanced countries in the region and the Islamic world, have always had a lot of common grounds for mutual cooperation. We need to study these grounds,” Zarif stated.

“The United States is engaged in an economic war against the Iranian people and it won’t be possible for us to engage with the United States unless they stop imposing (the) war and engaging in economic terrorism against the Iranian people,” Zarif told reporters in Kuala Lumpur after addressing a forum on security in the Islamic world, Reuters reported.

“So if they want to come back into the room, there is a ticket that they need to purchase and that ticket is to observe the agreement,” he said, referring to the 2015 nuclear deal.

Zarif said Iran does not want to meet for the sake of meeting. “We need to meet if there is a result,” he said.

US President Donald Trump said this week he would meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani under the right circumstances to end the confrontation over the 2015 nuclear deal and that talks were underway to see how countries could open credit lines to keep Iran’s economy afloat.

Rouhani has said Iran would not talk to the United States until all sanctions were lifted.

Zarif paid a visit to the Group of Seven summit in France on the weekend, holding talks on the sidelines of the meeting with French officials.

He is scheduled to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad later on Thursday.
