TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced that the organization has identified 16 new promising mineral zones in Kermanshah province, in the west of Iran, and intends to complete the next stages of exploration.

Vajihollah Jafari said that IMIDRO has conducted 7600 kilometers of aerial geophysical operations in this province. Among the results were the identification of seven areas with potential for iron ore and poly-metal in Sonqor, Kangavar, and Sahne.

Noting that this organization has no restrictions on exploration in the provinces, the IMIDOR head clarified: “Considering the valuable mineral potentials in Kermanshah province, the completion of exploration operations will provide investment opportunities for this province.”

As stated by Head of Iran’s Geological Survey and Mineral Explorations Organization (GSI) Alireza Shahidi, there are currently 55 billion tons of proven mineral reserves in the country.

According to Shahidi, increasing the depth and expanding areas of the exploration operations could add to Iran’s current mineral reserves.

“The GSI has been identifying hidden reserves across the country over the past two decades, which means that these reserves have no signs on the surface, so we hope to be able to identify them using aerial geophysics,” Shahidi said.

Back in May, IMIDRO had announced that new mineral reserves worth over $28.7 billion have been discovered across the country over the past eight years.

Having 81 different types of minerals, Iran is one of the top 10 mineral-rich countries across the globe. In this regard, the Iranian government has been seriously pursuing several programs for promoting the mining sector as a major contributor to the country’s economic growth.

Iran’s proven iron ore reserves are 2.7 billion tons, while the country’s copper reserves are 2.6 billion tons. The country also has 11 million tons of zinc reserves.

The total proven reserves of Iran’s mines are expected to reach more than 100 billion tons with the implementation of the Industry, Mining, and Trade Ministry’s exploration programs over 500,000 square kilometers of new mineral zones.

Despite the country’s huge potential in this area, due to some issues like the lack of necessary machinery and equipment and the lack of access to financial resources and foreign investment because of the U.S. sanctions, the Iranian mining sector has been struggling to operate at its maximum capacity over the past few years.

So, the government programs for promoting this industry are mainly focused on relying on domestic sources for helping the mining sector overcome its current problems and hit its ideal targets.

President Inaugurates More Projects Despite Sanctions

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – President Hassan Rouhani has launched some major power and water projects in Kermanshah, Ardabil, and East Azarbaijan provinces in western and north-western Iran.

The projects, which were inaugurated by President Rouhani through videoconference calls on Thursday, include the second gas unit of Dalahoo Combined Cycle Power Plant in Eslamabad-e-Gharb County in Kermanshah province.

President Rouhani inaugurated five water and electricity projects worth over $210 million in three provinces during the 18th week of the Energy Ministry’s A-B-Iran program.

Inaugurated through video conference in a ceremony held in Tehran, the mentioned projects included a dam, a power station, two small-scaled solar farms, and some electricity transmission lines.

As reported the said projects were put into operation in Ardebil, East Azarbaijan, and Kermanshah provinces in the west and northwest of the country.

With the mentioned projects operational, a total of 1.7 megawatts (MW) has been added to the country’s solar power generation, 310 MW to the capacity of the combined cycle power plants, and 21 million cubic meters was also added to the storage capacity of the country’s dams.

The solar power plants, one with a capacity of 0.2 MW and the other with a capacity of 1.5 MW were inaugurated in Ardebil province.

The 0.2 MW power plant with a cumulative electricity output of 326,000 kWh is going to save 0.11 million cubic meters of natural gas consumption annually and emit 274 tons of carbon dioxide.

The 1.5 MW solar power plant with a cumulative output of 244,000 kWh will save 0.85 million cubic meters of natural gas, and also prevents the emission of carbon dioxide equivalent to 2056 tons per year while saving 655 cubic meters of water in the year.

The 310-megawatt gas unit of Dalahou Combined Cycle Power Plant in Kermanshah Province was also among the inaugurated projects, which was put into operation with a total investment of 109 million euros (about $130 million).

Kalghan Chai dam in the city of Bostanabad in East Azarbaijan was the third project inaugurated via video conference in the presence of Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian.

With a total capacity of 21 million cubic meters, the mentioned dam was constructed with 13.2 trillion rials (about $31.4 million) of investment.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony via videoconference, President Rouhani announced that the directive for the implementation of a program to award free electricity to 30 million low-consuming subscribers will be referred to the Energy Ministry over the next two months.

“This program, which will be implemented in the next two months, is a gift from the government to the people of our country, especially the residents of the villages, who are mainly among the low-consuming households,” Rouhani said.

He further stressed: “We are witnessing that the effort, dedication, and devotion of our nation, including employees, workers, and engineers throughout the country has paid off, and this condition is of great importance for us.”

Rouhani pointed out: “We are not in normal conditions and this year, and we are organizing such great inauguration ceremonies at the most difficult and severe time of sanctions.”

The Iranian president went on to say: “In the history of Iran during the last 2.5 years and from the beginning of 2018 until today, there has been no record of such pressure on the nation, and the people resisted these conspiracies with more endurance every day.”

Rouhani reminded: “We have proved that the United States has failed, and we definitely declare to the world and to history that the United States used all its plans and power to defeat the Iranian nation in order to put pressure them.”

Stating that the United States has suffered major political defeats in recent weeks, Rouhani said: “In more than seventy years since the establishment of the United Nations, there has been no record of the United States drafting a resolution against the Iranian nation, begging for votes for months, and calling on various countries. When the United States introduced a plan in the Security Council that was against Iran’s arms embargo, only one country voted for the United States, and 13 countries either voted against it or rejected the US resolution, that is, they rejected their plan.

The President continued: The U.S. ‘snapback’ mechanism resolution raised at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting about 10 days ago during a meeting on regional issues and the Palestinian cause and it also failed when 13 out of the 14 members delivered a speech and rejected it.”

The Iranian president also stressed: “With the resistance of the Iranian nation, on the one hand, the political defeat of the United States in the United Nations has been embodied, and on the other hand, we witness the prosperity of Iran.”

The inauguration ceremony of several developmental plans accomplished with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani in attendance via video conferencing.

Second Brigadier General Ali Akbar Javidan made the announcement, saying that following comprehensive intelligence activities, police forces of the province have identified and dismantled a drug band that distributed opium in Kermanshah.

The police chief noted that the consignment was discovered in a truck on which had entered Kermanshah from the eastern provinces.

One smuggler has been seized in this regard, in addition to confiscation of 521 kilograms of opium, he said.

670 kilograms of narcotics have been busted in the province since the beginning of the New Year in Iran (starting March 20) which indicates a 51 percent increase compared to the corresponding period last year, he added.

6 drug-trafficking bands have been dismantled in the province in the same period, Javidan said.

These sorts of operations are usual for Iran which is a neighbor to the source of drugs, Afghanistan. The Islamic Republic has been combating drug-traffickers for the past decades despite high economic and human costs. The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab, and Central Asian countries.

Director of the Kermanshah Airport told Tasnim on Saturday that an Airbus plane operated by Iran Air skidded off the taxiway after landing in the airport this morning.

After landing at 6:05 am local time, the airplane slid off the taxiway some 5 meters, Mojtaba Bayati added, dismissing reports about the failure of the landing gear.

All 102 passengers on board the plane are safe and the aircraft is also undamaged, he said.

Last week, a passenger plane of Iran’s Caspian Airline veered off course when its wheel split apart after landing in the southwestern city of Mahshahr and ran into a boulevard outside the airport. Nobody was hurt in the accident.

“A terrorist group linked with the global arrogance (the US), who intended to cross the country’s western borders and carry out acts of sabotage and terrorism, was smashed… in an ambush by the Najaf Ashraf Base fighters and after clashes in the Javanrud District,” the public relations department of the IRGC Ground Force’s Najaf Ashraf Base said in a statement.

“In this operation, significant amounts of weapons, ammunition and communications equipment were also captured from the terrorists,” it added.

One of the fighters of the IRGC base, Mohammad Khan Soleymani Nasab, was also martyred in the operation, according to the statement.

Earlier this month, the IRGC forces killed all the members of a terrorist team that had crossed Iran’s northwestern border to help and evacuate their comrades who had been injured in a gunfight with the IRGC a day before.

The IRGC’s Hamze Sayyid al-Shohada Base said in a statement on July 5 that its forces had smashed a team of terrorists at Iran’s northwestern border the previous night.

The intruding terrorists entered the country from Turkey to help their comrades who had been injured in a clash with the IRGC forces.

And last month, the IRGC attacked a team of terrorists in the northwesternmost corner of Iran, killing one and seizing equipment from them after they crossed the border,

The terrorists had plans to infiltrate into the country from Chaldoran region in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan on June 24.

The spokesman for the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said the IRGC is ready to dispatch its forces and equipment to the province of Kermanshah in western Iran after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the province.

The IRGC is well prepared in the area of health and medical assistance and its equipment and facilities are ready to be used when need be, General Ramezan Sharif said on Monday.

He added that in a telephone call with the commander of the IRGC of Kermanshah Province, he was informed that the incident was not too serious.

More than 630 people were injured in the magnitude 6.4 earthquake near the border with Iraq on Sunday night.

According to Tehran’s Institute of Geophysics, the quake struck 17 km west of the city of Sarpol-e-Zahab, 18 km from Qasr-e Shirin and 33 km from the city of Gilan-e-Gharb in Kermanshah province.

The institute put the magnitude of the quake at 6.4. It was followed by a number of aftershocks ranging from 3-5.2 degrees on the Richter scale.

The tremor was also felt in most cities in Kermanshah and Ilam provinces as well as in Tabriz and Urmia, the capital cities of East and West Azarbaijan provinces, respectively.

It also jolted the Iraqi capital Baghdad and Kuwait.

Some 630 people were injured following the quake and its aftershocks.

“…No fatalities have been reported,” Houshang Bazvand, governor of Kermanshah province, told state TV.

“No reports of any fatalities yet and most of the injured were hurt while fleeing, not due to quake damage,” Pir-Hossein Kolivand, head of Iran’s emergency services, also confirmed.

Iran, which sits on several geological fault lines, is prone to earthquakes and suffers a quake per day on average.

In November 2017, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Kermanshah Province, killing more than 600 and injuring more than 9,000.
