TEHRAN (Iran News) –Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani has launched the production line of homegrown Yasin training jet, which could also be tasked for close air support (CAS).

“Among our main concerns is training fighter pilots, because the process is of paramount significance and requires training aircraft in different classes,” Ashtani said at ceremony in the capital Tehran on Saturday morning.

He stated that experts and specialists at the Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO) started designing Yasin training jet years ago, and its second prototype was unveiled Saturday.

“The homegrown characteristics of the training jet make it suitable to be utilized for close air support (CAS) of military aircraft” against hostile targets as well, the Iranian defense chief said.

Ashtiani said most of the military gear and equipment of the advanced aircraft have been localized, expressing hope that it will perform assigned tasks and prove effective in reducing training duration and improving training quality.

Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) Brigadier General Hamid Vahedi also said, “Previously, our fighter pilots used to be trained abroad. The first sector affected as a result of the sanctions against our country was this field, which created difficulties for us in terms of training.”

“Utilization of the new aircraft will make training duration more complete and shorter,” he said.

The new version of Yasin training jet that was unveiled on Monday appears to have been much more upgraded and developed in tactical terms compared to the first prototype unveiled during a ceremony in Shahid Noje Airbase in Iran’s western province of Hamadan on October 17, 2019.

The Iranian jet trainer is now furnished with a homegrown ejection seat, avionics, engine, and landing gear.

The airborne weather radar installed on its radome has been manufactured by domestic knowledge-based companies.

Yasin reportedly weighs 5.5 tonnes, and is able to fly up to 1,200 kilometers.

Its wing design enables the jet to land and take off at a speed of at least 200 kilometers per hour.

Iranian military experts and engineers have in recent years made remarkable breakthroughs in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient.

Officials have repeatedly underscored that the country will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, including its missile power, which are entirely meant for defense, and that Iran’s defense capabilities will be never open for negotiations.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has repeatedly called for efforts to maintain and boost Iran’s defense capabilities, decrying enemies for questioning the country’s missile program.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –After intense pressure from Western allies, Germany finally agreed to send advanced tanks to Ukraine. Now the issue of sending warplanes has divided NATO even further.

Some NATO leaders have said that they are open to the idea, while others have refused to entertain any more escalation.

Berlin has once again rejected any such delivery while implying that some parties in NATO are trying to provide more advanced weapon systems than others.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has toughened up his government’s rejection of any demands by Kyiv to supply Ukraine with fighter jets following the fiasco that ended up with Berlin’s agreement to deliver its Leopard battle tanks.

President Joe Biden has also said the United States would not provide F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Biden said he was opposed to supplying American fighter jets to Ukraine, as Kyiv expands its list of weaponry.

“No,” he said when asked if he was in favor of sending F-16s or others. His refusal to send F-16 fighters come as the U.S., Germany and other countries have agreed to boost the Ukrainian arsenal by providing heavy battle tanks.

There isn’t just a split in the NATO military alliance, but also in the U.S. foreign policy elite.

Analysts have pointed out that key advisors to the Pentagon have come out saying that it is in America’s interests that the war be stopped sooner than later so that the United States can concentrate on its next area of conflict, which is of much greater interest, that is containing China.

Victoria Nuland, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, made it quite clear in her remarks to Congress during a testimony a couple of days ago that her department understands the fragility of the Ukrainian military position.

Other statements made by Nuland and others have been seen by analysts as U.S. foreign policy makers are at odds with each other on how to move forward with the crisis instigated by Washington.

The ouster of Ukrainian officials over corruption scandals has renewed questions about how the government in Kyiv is addressing concerns about U.S. military aid, which has been shipped to the tune of tens of billions of dollars.

Analysts believe that the war may be gearing up for a significant escalation in the coming months and NATO warplanes would increase Kyiv’s power, with its own air force significantly depleted after nearly a year of war.

In an interview with a German daily newspaper, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said “the question of combat aircraft does not arise at all … I can only advise against entering into a constant competition to outbid each other when it comes to weapons systems.”

“If, as soon as a decision has been made, the next debate starts in Germany, this does not look very serious and shakes the confidence of the citizens in government decisions,” Scholz told Tagesspiegel. “Such debates should not be conducted for reasons of domestic political profiling. It is important to me now that all those who have announced their intention to supply battle tanks to Ukraine do so,” he added.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said Paris would not rule out providing fighter jets to Ukraine but has warned against the risk of escalation in the conflict.

Following talks with Holland’s Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Macron declared that “nothing is excluded in principle.”

Rutte, for his part, has said he is also open to the idea of sending U.S.-made Dutch F-16s to Ukraine.

“There is no taboo but it would be a big step,” said Rutte.

Any arms delivery “must not weaken the capacity of the French armed forces,” Macron pointed out, adding that France would have to be confident that the weapons would not be used to strike inside Russia, which would significantly escalate the war.

At the same time, NATO members are wary of sending further advanced weapons to Ukraine at the risk of entering into a direct confrontation with Russia.

Many say this is what left Germany dithering over sending its battle tanks to the warzone as it did not want to appear as the warmonger in the conflict.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has said that Kyiv was in talks with allies about the delivery of warplanes, but revealed that some NATO members have a “conservative” attitude on arms deliveries.

Advocates of a peaceful resolution to the war have slammed the delivery of tens of billions of dollars’ worth of weapons to prolong the war in eastern Ukrainian territories.

Fighting has continued at key points along the long front as Russian forces sought to expand their hold on territory in the Donetsk region.

These are the same eastern regions that have witnessed deadly fighting between armed ethnic Russians and the Ukrainian military since 2014, killing some 14,000 people before the war began in February 2022.

With the failure of the Minsk agreements to end the fighting and the U.S.-led NATO military alliance expanding on Russian borders, Moscow dispatched troops into the ongoing battle in what the Kremlin described as a “special military operation”.

Many have also highlighted NATO and the U.S.’s failure to address Moscow’s security guarantees in the months leading up to the war which erupted on 24 February 2022.

With Ukraine’s supplies of artillery munitions heavily depleted, France and Australia announced on Monday a deal to jointly produce 155 mm shells for Kyiv’s forces.

“Several thousand 155 mm shells will be manufactured jointly,” French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said.

Meanwhile, while in Seoul, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on South Korea to “step up” military support for Ukraine, calling on the country to reconsider its policy of not exporting weapons to countries in conflict.

There is an “urgent need for more ammunition,” Stoltenberg said.

NATO’s call for more military support for Ukraine comes despite Moscow calling Western shipments of arms to the country a blatant provocation. Russia says the move is extremely dangerous and will escalate the conflict and suffering of Ukrainians.

Analysts say Western governments and mainstream media are lying when they claim the world is united against Russia.

From the 193 countries in the world, about 30 have imposed sanctions on Russia or send military hardware to Ukraine.

This essentially means the vast majority of the world is opposed to the West’s position on Russia when it comes to the Ukraine war.

NATO not only has asked South Korea but also some countries in Latin America.

This suggests that NATO members are running short of weapons. Experts say countries like Canada, the UK, France and Germany have almost emptied their own stockpiles, which is why NATO is calling on South Korea and certain Latin American countries to send weapons.

The other question is whether the NATO chief has the authority to demand from other sovereign countries to become a party to the war.

NATO has no right whatsoever to call on other countries to get involved or send weapons to a warzone.

Some NATO critics say Ukraine is set to lose the war and Stoltenberg is making attempts to reshape international approach toward the conflict by turning global opinion against Moscow.

Polls in European countries have indicated more people want an end to the war as they foot the bill for their government spending on a conflict that has seen inflation hit record levels on the continent.

Speaking to the French broadcaster BFMTV, France’s Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire voiced hope that the United States would allow the Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR to deliver its regional planes to Iran before the August 6 deadline, when the first batch of sanctions will be introduced.

“I am hopeful that the United States will give us permission to deliver these ATRs. There were eight to be delivered before August 6,” he told the French broadcaster.

Le Maire further explained that he has been involved in talks with his American counterpart and was willing to discuss the future of other sectors:

“I’ve been negotiating for weeks with my counterpart, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and I’m hopeful we’ll get on a number of topics that directly affect our SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and our jobs in US-owned territories. I’m also fighting so that in the health sector, in the agri-food sector, which are now beyond the sanctions, there may be funding channels that remain open,” the minister said.

The three overhauled jets include F-14 and F-7 fighter aircraft, as well as a PC7 Turbo Trainer, according to commander of Shahid Babaei Airbase, Mohammad Jafar Tak.

He maintained that the efforts put into the overhauling process of the grounded aircraft showed that the enemy’s attempts at imposing sanctions in a bid to undermine the country’s defense capabilities have been futile.

He added that efforts to overhaul grounded aircraft are in line with the Leader’s directives on promoting resistance economy and the necessity of cutting down on expenses.

The PC7 Turbo Trainer, which had been grounded since 2016, returned to the operational mode after one year and 5,000 manpower/hours spent on it. The F-7 fighter had been grounded since 2013, and became once again operational after the overhaul process and going through four flight tests.

The overhaul process for the F-14 fighter jet began last February. It went through the flight tests last month and has now become fit to join the operational fleet of Army’s air force, commander Tak added.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier general Dehqan pointed to the development process of Qaher and said the fighter jet has been designed to conduct close air support missions.

It has been undergoing pre-flight tests, he said, adding that one of the tests the aircraft should undergo is fast taxiing.

Taxiing is the movement of an aircraft on the ground, under its own power, in contrast to towing or push-back where the aircraft is moved by a tug.

The former defense minister went on to say that the Qaher fighter jet is currently conducting fast taxi runs.

He also pointed to the development of another homegrown jet, dubbed Kowsar-88, saying that it is also performing fast taxi runs, preparing for take-off.

The Iranian fighter jet Qaher-313 was unveiled in February 2013. The single-seat stealth fighter jet can take off and land on short runways.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Tehran has always assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to the regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

Yemeni air defense forces, according to what Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported, have intercepted and shot down a twin-engine and multirole Panavia Tornado combat aircraft belonging to the Saudi-led military alliance involved in the aerial bombardment campaign against Yemen.

A Yemeni military source told Iran’s Press TV, on condition of anonymity, that the fighter jet was targeted on Sunday evening as it was flying in the skies over Kitaf wa al-Boqe’e district in the country’s northwestern mountainous province of Sa’ada, Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah television network reported.

The source added that the aircraft was struck with a surface-to-air missile fired by Yemeni forces.

The jet had purportedly taken part in airstrikes against residential neighborhoods in Yemen. The development was also reflected on the official Twitter page of al-Masirah.

Lebanon plans to file a complaint with the United Nations against Israel for planting spy devices and violating the country’s airspace.

The Israeli warplanes violated Lebanon’s airspace on Sunday, flying at a low altitude and breaking the sonic barrier above the country’s third city of Sidon and Palestinian refugee camps in the area.

On Saturday, Hezbollah said it had spotted an Israeli spying contraption, with a thermal camera for night vision, which was hidden in a rock in Kfar Shebba, east of Shebba Farms in southern Lebanon.

Prime Minister Sa’ad Hariri on Monday requested that the Foreign Ministry file a complaint with the UN against Israel, Beirut-based The Daily Star newspaper reported.

“We have begun preparing a complaint to be referred to the [UN] Security Council,” Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said in a tweet. He said the intrusion had caused “material, moral, and sovereign damage” to Lebanon.

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri also said, “Israeli low flyby above Sidon and particularly [the Palestinian refugee camp of] Ain al-Hilweh, is a direct message of threat directed towards us.”

Speaking to local newspaper Al-Akhbar on Monday, Berri regretted that internal divisions had emboldened Tel Aviv to take such measures.

“We are distracted internally, while Israel carries out maneuvers against us and it provided an example for that by breaking the sound barrier in Sidon,” he said.

Back-to-back incursions

The incident came a day after Bassil said the Arab country would lodge an “urgent complaint” with the Security Council against Israel over an airstrike conducted from the Lebanese airspace on a military facility in the western Syrian province of Hama.
