In bilateral meeting, Namaki highlighted the Iranian Government’s policy under President Hassan Rouhani in the health sector, more focusing on providing health insurance, infrastructure, malignant diseases and preventive measures against communicable diseases.

Namaki said that right now, the Iranian government is also building a medical record system for Iranian citizens. Furthermore, there were 66 medical universities in Iran and around 97% of medicines supplied by more than 1200 local industries. Iran is also building a number of industries in the field of medical devices. About 67% of raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry in Iran are provided by local companies. Iran is also ready to develop halal vaccines from Asian countries including Indonesia.

Meanwhile the Indonesian Minister of Health said that her visit to Iran was one of the commitments to immediately implement the MoU on health cooperation that had been ratified in Geneva on the sidelines of the World Health Council meeting. With a large population and geographical conditions, Indonesia has a number of challenges. Same with Iran at this time Indonesia is also fixing health care services, efforts to reduce mortality rates, reduce infant mortality rates and prevent complex diseases.

She said that the Government of Indonesia had launched two programs namely the Nusantara Sehat Program where new doctors and health workers were assigned to remote areas. Another program is the Healthy Food Movement (Germas) which promotes healthy lifestyles.

“We have already used Chinese financing in building hospitals with over 500 beds across the country. We have a similar project in Mashhad, but we haven’t yet reached an agreement [with the Chinese side]. If we reach an agreement in our talks, we will disclose the details to the public,” he said.

“We are currently in talks with the Chinese side and private companies about ways to use their help in the form of finance for the development of our health infrastructures,” he added.

“Currently 97% of Iran’s required medicine is produced by domestic companies and only 3% are being imported,” he told Mehr on Tuesday

He said that these drugs are classified as high-tech and their production needs state-of-the-art technologies.

Asked when Iran can produce these advanced drugs, he said that “we have plans to produce this 3% in Iranian companies by the next three years.”

Despite US sanctions on Iran, which were imposed after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, pharmaceutical industries have made impressive progress, meeting the needs for almost all of the required drugs in the country. At the same time, the very same sanctions have created some problems for some Iranian patients as foreign companies don’t sell medicine to Iran in fear of US sanctions. US claims that it has not imposed sanctions on medicine but, in practice, it is affecting the Iranian patients.

Foreign Minister Zarif said in early June that “Economic Terrorism against Iran targets innocent civilians. Like this little boy, whose heartbroken mother can’t get him prosthetic legs as he grows. They’re sanctioned.” His post included the video of a mother who says the US sanctions have made the prosthetic limbs almost unobtainable in the market.

He made the remarks Monday at a public session of the Iranian parliament to defend Saeed Namaki for the position of Minister of Health and Medical Education.

Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi, the previous health minister, resigned from his position over proposed budget cuts in early January.

Rouhani noted that “the rapid development of the health sector is one of the many achievements of the Islamic Revolution.”

He congratulated the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution and said, “we all know that the health sector, treating patients, health expenses, disease prevention, independence and health tourism are important for our country.”

“A quick overview of the preliminary figures in the health sector clearly indicates how much developments have been made in the past 40 years after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.”

“In 1979 before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the entire population of doctors that we had was 14,700, out of which 6,000 doctors were foreign and half of the health sector relied on foreign doctors,” he continued, adding that today some 140,000 Iranian doctors are offering services to the public.

He also appreciated the efforts of former Health Minister Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi and regretted his resignation.

Saying that the Islamic Revolution has chosen a good path in health issues, he added, “this does not mean that we have no problems in the health sector, but when we compare it to 40 years ago and other countries, we see that we have had considerable progress.”

“Since the beginning of the 11th government, we had been thinking about a plan to reform the health sector,” he said, adding, that in 2014, Healthcare Reform Plan was operationalized with the sincere efforts of Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi.

“Dr Hashemi’s name will stay forever with Healthcare Reform Plan in the history of our country.”

Stating that the Healthcare Reform Plan has taken good steps in the past 5 to 6 years, the Iranian President said, “the number of hospital beds in the first years after the victory of the Islamic Revolution was 55,000, while today, we have 129,600, which shows 131 per cent growth.”

Elsewhere, Rouhani appreciated the speaker, board of directors and the members of the Parliament for approving the four important bills on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism. “This will be recorded in history as an important job by the Majlis [Parliament] and the government.”

“We have always been a pioneer in fighting terrorism and we must not allow those who have people’s blood on their hands and have conducted various terrors in the history to claim they are fighting terrorism, and give them a pretext to insult us,” said Rouhani.

“Two bills have so far been finalized, and God willing, the other two will be finalized soon.”

“Before the revolution, we needed to go abroad to treat some illnesses or have an operation, but today, this need is met almost completely, or even been vice-versa. Today, we have many health tourists,” Rouhani maintained.

“In the beginning days after the Islamic Revolution, 25 per cent of our medicine was produced in the country but today, we are proud that we can produce 95 per cent of our medicine domestically.”

The President also went on to stress the importance of how medical students are trained and educated, saying, “If we review the process of medical education in our country from the first day, we will find out that our medical universities have to be reformed and this is one of the most important responsibilities of the new minister.”

About Dr Namaki as his choice for the position of Minister of Health and Medical Education, he said, “I found Dr. Namaki as the best choice, as Dr. Hashemi himself proposed him.”

Speaking at a joint meeting of Iran-India pharmaceutical industries and medical equipment in New Delhi on Friday, Hassan Hashemi said Iranian Ministry of Health has provided a package to facilitate the permanent presence and investment of foreign pharmaceutical companies in the country.

He said once a product is produced inside Iran, the Iranian government will impose restrictions on the import of the same product from European and American companies. The products will also be marketed with reasonable prices in Iran, he added.

Hashemi stressed that long-term investment in Iran would provide Indian companies with a stable market.

The Iranian minister noted that he has told Indian minister of commerce not to deprive Indian companies of exporting their products to Iran while European and American sides continue to export to Iran even in the face of sanctions.

He added that doing business with national currencies has given Indian companies a good opportunity to invest in the Iranian market and the West Asia region, noting that if India fails to take advantage of this opportunity, Iran would go to other countries for investment.

He further promised that Indian companies would receive support to patent their products in Iran.
