The Iranian delegation was led by Mohammad Qassemi, director general for Iran’s Tourism Marketing and Promotion, and Demyan Smilevets, the head of the International Cooperation Department of the Federal Agency for Tourism, led the Russian delegation.

During tourism committee meeting, the two sides exchanged views about tourism cooperation in a friendly atmosphere, IRNA reported.

Both countries reviewed ways to share experiences in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and measures to thwart the threat posed by the pandemic to the tourism industry.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, inked a visa-free agreement for tourist groups on March 28, 2017. Based on the agreement, tour groups of five to 50 people heading toward Russia from Iran, or vice versa, will be granted a visa-free stay of up to 15 days.

To implement it, it was necessary to set up a joint action plan to specify the process. The joint action plan of the two countries has been prepared for the three-year period, 2020-2022, which can be extended and revised.

Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Ali-Asghar Mounesan recently said he would visit Russia to attend the B2B negotiations by September 21 in order to carry out the final negotiations on the Iran-Russia visa waiver deal.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts said that all losses imposed on three sectors of Iran’s cultural heritage, tourism and handicrafts will be compensated for with a boom in travel during post-coronavirus days.

Ali-Asghar Mounesan said that although the Persian New Year (started on March 20, 2020) began with the coronavirus outbreak, the year should see a big development in the tourism industry, according to chtn.ir.

“This year should be the year of accelerating construction projects, and the measures that have already been started need to be followed up and the projects should be fully operational,” the minister added.

Mounesan pointed to the activities of a number of handicraft workshops during the coronavirus days to produce masks and medical gowns, adding that, it is an altruistic act that people working in the workshops have turned the virus threat into an opportunity.

The minister continued, “We will definitely have an unprecedented surge in the number of trips after coronavirus outbreak, and much of the tourism losses will be made up by the boom in travel; therefore, all provinces must be prepared to welcome tourists.”

He also said on April 14 that the ministry is pursuing the allocation of about $250,000 to compensate for the damages to Iran’s tourism infrastructure.

Mounesan noted that the World Tourism Organization recently issued a report estimating that international tourist arrivals could decline by 20 to 30 percent in 2020. Arrivals could also return to seven years ago due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, mcth.ir reported.

“The organization has estimated a loss of 290 to 440 billion dollars,” Mounesan pointed out.

The containment of the pandemic is the utmost priority and the tourism sector is committed to supporting all measures taken to curb the outbreak. UNWTO is working closely with the World Health Organization, its member states, and the industry to ensure a coordinated and effective response, he added.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, Abdolnaser Hemmati, the CBI chief added, “Today, I, along with First Vice President [Es’haq Jahangiri], attended a meeting with those involved in the domestic tourism, cultural heritage and handicrafts sectors. The officials of these sectors, as well as the heads of the related associations, expounded on the problems they face due to the coronavirus contagion in the country at a time when their activities should have been at their peak,” IRNA reported.

Hemmati said under normal circumstances, hotels, tourism and handicraft centers as well as travel agencies in Iran reach the peak of their activities and income generation during the New Year holidays (March 20-April 1), adding this year, their activities were completely suspended during the high season.

In the meeting, he added, they presented remarkable proposals concerning the postponement of the due date for the payment of the installments and receiving new loans to prevent further harm to their businesses.

The CBI governor also stressed that the biggest harm the virus causes is endangering lives of Iranian people, which is far less important than its negative economic impacts.

The CBI governor gave the assurance that the country’s banking system will provide with maximum assistance domestic tourism sector businesses harmed by the coronavirus spread, as prosperity will be restored to the sector only if the situation in the country returns to normal and the spread of the virus is fully contained.

Saudi Arabia with $21 billion, UAE with $16 billion and Qatar with $13 billion were ranked first to third while Malaysia and Russia, each grossing about $7 billion, gained 7th and 8th positions.

Muslims across the planet want to vacation in environments that respect their beliefs and cater to their requirements. Such concerns range from providing halal food at restaurants and hotels, to more diverse offerings, such as accommodation that includes prayer rooms, and resorts that have segregated as well as family-friendly facilities at swimming pools and beaches.

In line with the growth of other Islamic economy sectors, Muslims are also hoping for Islamic-themed entertainment, healthcare, shopping and Islamic financing options.

Muslim spend on travel was valued at $177 billion in 2017, and is forecast to grow to $274 billion by 2023, the report suggests.

A subcategory of tourism, Halal travel is geared toward the specific needs of Muslim individuals who seek to abide by the Islamic rules.

Two years ago, The Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran (ISIRI) planned to establish a set of standards to promote Halal tourism in the country.

Iran hosts some of the world’s oldest cultural monuments, including 21 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and its varied terrain ranges from desert locales to ski resorts.

As he added, the data shows a 27 percent growth compared to the first half of the preceding year.

The minister hoped that the announced figure will hit 10 million by the current year-end.

As reported, the largest numbers of tourists entering the Isfahan province are from Germany, France, China, Spain, Turkey, Japan, Greece, Thailand, and Australia.

Iran has taken some important steps to increase its revenues from tourism under US sanctions.

For instance, as of July 16, the country started the implementation of no-visa policy for Chinese and Hongkonger tourists and businessmen who make trips to Iran.

Also in mid-August, Chairman of Iran Tour Operators Association Ebrahim Pourfaraj announced that the ban on imports of motorcycles with engines above 250cc and cars over 2,500cc has been removed to let foreign tourists ride them on Iranian roads.

Such vehicles are now allowed to be imported for the use of foreign tourists under specific conditions and supervision of Iranian customs and travel agencies, he added.

The ban has been removed only in favor of foreign tourists but to have Iranians also enjoy riding such vehicles, an affiliated plan is needed to be submitted to the cabinet and ratified, Pourfaraj said.

The ban outlawing motorcycles with engines above the size of 250cc was introduced in the early years of the Islamic revolution.
