Under observing sanitary protocols for the COVUD-19 pandemic, polls have opened nationwide in Iran’s 2021 presidential election. Over 59.3 million Iranians are eligible to vote for one of four candidates running.

Polls opened across the country at 07:00 am local time on Friday, June 18, and ran the late in the evening. Over 59.3m Iranians were eligible to vote for one of the four remaining candidates in the race.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei cast his ballot early on.

“Election Day is the day of the Iranian nation. Today, people are in charge,” Ayatollah Khamenei said after casting his vote. “Even one single vote counts. No one should say ‘What will my one vote do?’ These one votes become millions when combined.”

The Leader also called on the Iranian nation to participate in the election as early as possible.

Ayatollah Khamenei also expressed his gratitude to the reporters who are busy with their job in the voting process and recommended the masses to participate in the election with due care, recognition and consideration.

In saying that every single vote definitely matters, Imam Khamenei advised the people, “You should participate and do this with a pure, divine intention. I advise you to do this important task at the earliest possible. The sooner you do this, the better.”

In referring to the anniversary of the birth of Imam Reza (AS), Imam Khamenei expressed hope that this Election Day will be a day of celebration for the Iranian people and that the nation will benefit from this election. In the end, the Leader thanked the election officials and the journalists who were present.”

Senior Iranian officials, including the heads of the three branches of government, also cast their votes at polling states in the capital, Tehran.

Addressing the people after casting his vote, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran was among a few countries in the world whose elections attract international attention.

He said, “People should be mindful that the whole world is today focused on the ballot boxes and the people’s queues to cast their world. God willing, we will act in a way that it will make our friends across the world happy and frustrate enemies.”

Majlis Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf also cast his vote for 13th Presidential Election in a polling station in Tehran’s Abouzar Neighborhood on Friday.

Officials have stressed that health protocols will be strictly observed in all polling stations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mohsen Rezaei Mir-Ghaed, Hojjatoleslam Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi, Abdolnaser Hemmati, and Seyyed Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi are the four candidates for Iran 2021 Presidential Election.

According to the polls, Hojjatoleslam Raisi is the favorite to win the election with overwhelming majority.

The supreme Leader remarks came in a mourning ceremony marking the Arbaeen ritual, an event falling 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) in the battle of Karbala in 680.

The ceremony was held at the Imam Khomeini Hussayniyah attended by groups of university students as well as some officials including the science minister, vice president for scientific affairs, and chief of the Islamic Dissemination Organization.

Ayatollah Khamenei, supreme leader, in a brief speech admired the young students’ enthusiastic mourning and said, “The purity and (spiritual) illumination of you dear ones are valuable and I always ask God to keep you and me steadfast on the right path, because if you are steadfast on the right path, the country will progress, and the world and humanity will benefit from the outcomes,” the Leader underscored.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks while paying a visit to an exhibition of knowledge-based companies and superior technologies in Tehran. He was accompanied by Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari.

The Supreme Leader said young people visiting the fair were asking why certain goods that are being produced inside the country are being imported.

“One of the complaints of young visitors and producers in this exhibition was the issue of importing some products which are manufactured in the country too,” the Leader remarked.

He said such a situation is the consequence of an economy which is dependent on revenues from crude exports, adding this “wrong view” must be reformed.

The Leader told Sattari that “you must not allow such barriers to block the way on our active young human resources, do your best in this regard and I will do my best too.”

“We should trust young generation who transforms many ideas into products in places like science and technology parks, Iran has more than 47 million active internet users, which create a big market in the region for ICT and IT based business” Sattari said.

The comments also come against the backdrop of several days of protests against mismanagement and corruption in Iraq, with certain demonstrations descending into violence and clashes.

According to a report released recently by Iraqi media, the protests were designed by the embassies of the UK, US, and the Netherlands in Iraq just before the Arba’een procession, in which millions of Muslims and non-Muslims take part annually, in a bid to create instability and push certain political agendas in the country.

Also, the Iraqi Interior and Health Ministries have said in statements that “a group of rioters” had infiltrated the protests and were leading them.
