TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization (PBO) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with three Iranian banks for supporting the saffron industry.

Based on the MoU which was signed by PBO’s Deputy Head Hamid Pour-Mohammadi and the managing directors of Bank Keshavarzi, Bank Mellat, and the Export Development Bank of Iran, about $238.09 million will be allocated for supporting the development of the saffron industry and its exports, IRNA reported.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Pour-Mohammadi noted that the mentioned funding will be provided to saffron producers and processors in the form of bank facilities to support the production of saffron and the packing and processing of this product, which has been impacted by the outbreak of the coronavirus.

According to the official, the interest rate of the mentioned facilities would be 18 percent, of which PBO has agreed to pay three percent.

According to official figures, Iran exported 12,320 kilograms of saffron valued at $11.2 million to 32 countries during the previous Iranian year (ending March 19), said the president of the University of Torbat-e Heydarieh (northeastern Iranian province of Khorasan Razavi) and its Saffron Research Institute.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily in May, Mohammad-Hassan Fat’hi-Nasri added that of this figure, 9,500 kilograms, worth $10.3 million, were exported from the Customs Department of the northeastern city of Mashhad to 25 countries.

He noted that, in other words, during this period, saffron exports from Mashhad’s customs accounted for 77 percent and 92 percent of the country’s total overseas sales of the same product in terms of weight and value, respectively.

The UAE was Iran’s biggest export destination, having imported 4,200 kilograms (34 percent of the total weight of the overseas sales) of saffron, valued at $4.6 million (41 percent of total value), followed by Spain and Afghanistan, Fat’hi-Nasri added.

According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on Monday, Iran produced 2.3 million tons of crude steel in July, showing a 14.3 percent increase compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 2.04 million tons.

China topped the list of crude steel producers in the same seven-month period, with an output of 93.3 million tons while Iran ranked 10th.

Standing second to ninth in this list were, respectively, India (7.15 million tons), Japan (6.04 million tons), Russia (5.8 million tons), South Korea (5.5 million tons), the US (5.2 million tons), Turkey (3.1 million tons), Brazil (2.5 million tons) and Germany (2.4 million tons), the report said.

Global steel production in July amounted to 152.69 million tons, showing a 2.54 percent decrease compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 156.67 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

The country plans to increase its annual steel production capacity to 55 million tons by 2025, with exports expected to reach between 10 million tons and 15 million tons per year.

The WSA is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. Its members represent approximately 85 percent of the world’s steel producers, including over 150 steel producers, with nine of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said its supply of natural gas to power plants across the country increased by two billion cubic meters (bcm) in the four months ending July 21, allowing the country to earn $1 billion from exports of the substituted gas oil.

“Every one billion liters of gas oil product is worth $500 million in the international market,” said NIGC Managing Director Hassan Montazer Torbati, adding, “With an increase of two bcm in the supply of gas to power plants, we have seen $1 billion from exports of the product,” reported Press TV.

Torbati did not elaborate on further details, including to which country Iran had supplied its surplus gas oil.

However, reports in recent months have suggested that gas oil exports has become a major source of earning hard currency for Iran, a country that has seen its direct sale of crude reduced under a series of US sanctions.

Torbati said the total gas supplied to Iranian power plants in the first four months of the current calendar year amounted to 26 bcm, or 210 million cubic meters a day. That is nearly a fourth of current daily output of natural gas in the country.

Iran plans to reach a natural gas output target of one bcm per day by the end of the current administrative government in August 2021.

Electricity generation has seen a huge boost mainly because of the stable supply of natural gas to Iranian power plants where the use of the so-called combined-cycle systems, in which the exhaust heat from firing gas in combustion turbines is returned to the production cycle, has become more prevalent in recent years.

Amir Khorramishad, who is deputy head of IMIDRO for planning, said that after sanctions imposed on the country, about 19,000 parts and equipment in industries were made domestically, reported Mehr News Agency.

As sanctions were intensified, foreign exchange revenues in the country have declined simultaneously, he said, adding, “Despite sanctions imposed on the country, domestically-made parts and equipment have experienced an ascending trend.”

Production of steel products in Iran increased five percent during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 20-July 21, 2020) compared to the same period last year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Industry.

As reported, 7.2 million tons of steel were produced during the four-month period, while the figure was 6.93 million tons in the first four months of the previous year.

Iranian steel producers produced 9.483 million tons of crude steel during March 20-July 21, 2020, which was nine percent more than 8.7 million tons of the product produced in the same period last year.

According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on July 23, Iranian steelmakers produced nearly 13.9 million tons of crude steel during the first half of 2020, marking a 10.2 percent rise compared to the figure for the same period of 2019, which was 12.6 million tons.

Iran produced 2.4 million tons of crude steel in June, showing a 5.3 percent increase compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 2.3 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran is expecting a moderate 15 percent increase in annual fishery production in the current calendar year (which started on March 20), as the country keeps expanding its aquaculture sector to alleviate concerns about reaching biological limits in marine fishing.

The head of Iran Fisheries Organization said that the annual output of various fishery products in the country is expected to reach 1.5 million tons by late March 2021, Press TV reported.

Last year, Iran produced 13,000 tons of fishery products, according to IRNA.

Nabiollah Khunmirzaei said Iranian aquaculture sector is expected to further expand this year as the government imposes additional bans on marine fishing while introducing incentives to encourage fish farming across the country.

“This year, aquaculture in the country will outdo marine fishing for the first time and this trend will continue in the coming years due to investments in [domestic] aquaculture sector,” he noted, adding Iran’s annual aquaculture production is to reach a total of 800,000 tons by late March 2021.

Over the past years, Iran, a country with 12,000 square kilometers of water surface, has seen a surge in fishery production and exports.

Official figures show that Iran’s aquaculture output more than doubled in three years to reach nearly 650,000 tons in the year to March 2019.

In the same year, a total of 650,000 tons of aquatic animals were caught in the countries northern and southern waters, noted the organization’s head.

Domestic demand for seafood keeps increasing, said Khunmirzaei, adding Iranians are consuming an average of 15 kilograms of seafood products each year, up from 12 kilograms in 2018.

Iran also views increased exports of aquaculture products as a stable source of income at the time the country’s access to foreign currency revenues remains tight because of American sanctions targeting its overseas sales of oil.

Among the Iranian aquatic animals that are becoming increasingly popular in foreign markets are rainbow trout, caviar and various species of shrimp.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran is expected to increase its annual gold production to 10 tons by March 2021.

This has been stipulated in the country’s Sixth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2016-2021), IRNA reported.

According to figures by the Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), the country achieved 80 percent of the target by March 2019.

IMIDRO statistics show that 670,592 tons of gold ore was extracted from Iranian mines in the year to March 2007, from which 1,432 kilograms of gold were produced.

As of that year, the country’s gold production started a growing trend, having been, however, subject to periodic fluctuations due to problems stemming from, among other things, the closure of processing factories.

In the year to March 2014, Iran mined 1.66 million tons of gold ore, from which 4,196 kilograms of gold were produced.

IMIDRO puts Iran’s total gold reserves at 300 tons.

Earlier, the head of Iran’s Mine House, Mohammadreza Bahraman, said close to 8.5 tons of gold were extracted from Iranian mines during the previous Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 19, 2020, according to yjc.ir.

He added that most of Iran’s gold reserves are located in small mines.

“Each mine creates at least 350 jobs,” Bahraman noted.

Zarshouran Gold Mine, located 35 kilometers from Takab, in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan, is the biggest gold mine in the Middle East, containing 30 percent of Iran’s gold reserves. Initial estimates have put recoverable gold deposits in Zarshuran at 55 tons, which could rise to 110 tons by further drilling.

Currently, some 700 people are working in the mine.

Sari Gunay, another gold mine in the western city of Qorveh, is being tapped by a Kazakh miner under a seven-year contract. Sari Gunay, which means yellow sun in Turkish, is estimated to hold 18 tons of reserves.

In 2006, Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto pulled out of the Sari Gunay project in Iran’s Kurdestan after deciding it was not commercially viable.

Iran has identified as many as 15 mines so far, capable of yielding 320 tons of processed gold. The country’s gold mines are mostly concentrated in the northwestern provinces of West Azarbaijan and East Azarbaijan, with the former containing about 0.5 percent of the world’s minable gold reserves.

Iran is ranked as the world’s 54th gold producer; and investment in the country’s gold mines has been reflecting a growing trend during the past few years as global gold prices keep rising.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran authorities say conditions governing the country’s long-term contracts for export of natural gas should change to adapt to a market that has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Conditions governing long-term gas export contracts would probably undergo essential change after corona (virus),” said Hossein Montazer Torbati, the deputy oil minister of Iran, who heads the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Press TV reported.

The comments come after reports in recent days suggested that Turkey, the main customer of Iran’s natural gas, is unwilling to repair a pipeline damaged in an explosion in late March as it seeks lower prices in the light of a recent fall in international crude prices.

Gas export deals designate oil prices as a benchmark for determining gas prices although any price change would need at least six months to take effect.

Montazer told the semiofficial ILNA news agency that Iran would introduce new pricing mechanisms in gas export deals in the future, without elaborating on how they would work.

He said Iran would also start negotiating with Turkey about an extension to the current gas export deal beyond 2025.

The NIGC chief said Iran would always remain a reliable supplier of natural gas to Turkey despite changes that are taking place in the country’s energy market where the government is allowing more activity for the private sector suppliers.

On Iran’s plans for gas exports to new regions and countries, Montazer Torbati said Tehran is studying plans to deliver gas to areas bordering Iran in the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan in neighboring Iraq.

The official said authorities in the Iraqi Kurdistan have submitted several requests for starting gas supply from Iran to the bordering regions.

He also said that the Iranian Oil Ministry’s Department for International Affairs is currently working on a contract for launching gas exports to Oman.

As reported by Farina ؛ Esmail Zamani, last year, it was decided, after 5 years of effort, to compete in Arvand Free Zone with the free zones of the world and to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses.

Zamani stated: this was a reason to expose ourselves to the evaluation of the fDi magazine, a specialized section of the Financial Times, which evaluates and rates the free zones of the world every year. After announcing the results of the evaluation, Arvand Free Zone won the Specialized Steel Industry Award and the Premium Region Award for Infrastructure Development among the world’s free zones in the year 2019.

He emphasized: since 2013, the Board of Directors of the Organization has been focusing on increasing production and export, tourism industry development and infrastructure development by attracting maximum investment for the general welfare of Abadan, Khorramshahr, and Minooshr in the last four years. Also, the company has invested 5000 billion tomans in domestic investment and 500000 million dollars in foreign investment, including Kaveh Arvand Steel Plant, Jahan Ara Steel Plant and Phase 2 Development of Abadan Refinery.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The value of Iran’s exports to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU)’s member states rose 72 percent during the first ten months of the current Iranian year (March 21-December 21, 2019) compared to the same period last year, announced the spokesman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

Mentioning the significant growth of trade between Iran and EEU since the implementation of the free trade agreement (FTA) between the two sides on October 27, 2019, Rouhollah Latifi announced that the weight of Iran’s export to those countries increased 114 percent during the mentioned 10-month period, IRNA reported.

According to the officials, Iran exported 2.683 million tons of commodities worth over $861 million to the EEU member states during the first ten months of the present Iranian year.

Iran’s imports from the EEU has also risen to 2.563 million tons valued at $1.1 billion in the mentioned time period, indicating a five-percent fall in worth, and a 41-percent rise in weight, year-on-year.

After several years of negotiations, Iran and the EEU finally reached a free trade agreement in 2018, based on which about 862 commodity items are subject to preferential tariffs.

The interim agreement enabling the formation of a free trade area between Iran and the EEU was signed on May 17, 2018, and officially came into force on October 27, 2019.

Iran is a very important market in the region and the development of ties with this country is of great significance for the EEU members (Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan).

The free trade agreement between Iran and this union has laid the ground for the expansion of trade ties between the two sides.

Signing the agreement with the bloc has increased Iran’s exports to the EEU member states significantly, which is a turning point for Iran to boost its exports during a time of sanctions.

The Iran-EEU free trade agreement is also an opportunity for Iran to reach its goal of boosting exports to its neighbors, which the country is seriously pursuing.

While the FTA has facilitated Iran’s trade with EEU member states, it is a limited agreement, valid for three years, so traders should take the most advantage of the current condition.

The minister for trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission has said that the temporary agreement between Iran and EEU can be turned into a permanent one after three years.
