Iran-Kuwait relations bolstered in Raisi administration, Iran envoy says

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Ambassador to Kuwait, Mohammad Toutounchi, has said in a meeting with the Kuwaiti Parliament Speaker that Iran-Kuwait ties are further cemented during the Raisi administration.

He expressed hope for increased trade exchanges between the two nations with the help of their respective parliaments.

The Iranian ambassador also discussed the expansion and development of parliamentary cooperation between the neighboring countries.

He also called “parliamentary cooperation” one of the most important areas of development of relations between the two countries.

Appreciating the stances of the government, nation, and parliament of Kuwait toward the Palestinian nation, he voiced the readiness of Iran’s parliament to support the resistance of the people in Gaza.

The Kuwaiti National Assembly speaker, Ahmad al-Sadoun, wished success to the Iranian ambassador, saying, “We always try to develop parliamentary relations with all neighboring countries, particularly Iran, and we have had many fruitful, and transparent meetings.”

Al-Sadoun reiterated that bilateral meetings lead to clarification and mutual understanding of the positions of both countries.

He also emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Storm operation changed public opinion and exposed the criminal nature of the occupying regime even to the people of the West.

Iran Kuwait stress enhancing coop in drug trafficking fight

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Islamic Republic of Iran and Kuwait emphasized on strengthening and enhancing bilateral cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

Chief of Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Police Brigadier General Majid Karimi made the remarks in a joint bilateral meeting with his Kuwaiti counterpart through videoconference on Sunday and stated, “With the mutual cooperation and interaction, we hope that the two countries of Iran and Kuwait will take appropriate measures in the fight against drug trafficking in the region.”

Turning to the high volume of narcotics cultivation and production in Afghanistan and the need to increase bilateral cooperation in combating ill phenomenon of drug trafficking, he added, “The volume of narcotics imports and drug trafficking from Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Islamic Republic of Iran is at a high level in a way that most of the drugs imported from Afghanistan to Iran are smuggled and transited to regional and European countries.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the chief of Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Police pointed to the volume of narcotics discovered in the country last year (ended March 20, 2020) and in the current year (started March 21, 2021) and added, “The volume of narcotics discovered by the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2020 stood at about 1,150 tons, the rate of which hit over 217 tons in the first three months of 2021.”

Chief of Kuwait Anti-Narcotics Police Colonel Mohammad Qabazard thanked Iranian side for organizing this virtual meeting held in the field of amount of discoveries of narcotics and stated, “Given the spread of the coronavirus pandemic as well as existence of problems in the field of dealing with smuggling and transit of narcotics, it is a matter of happiness that Kuwait has achieved salient progresses in the field of discovery of narcotics and arrest of drug traffickers.

Kuwait wants to increase interaction and cooperation with the Anti-Narcotics Police of the Islamic Republic of Iran in all fields, he stated.

Iran Embraces Kuwaiti Proposal for Regional Dialogue

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tehran embraces the Kuwaiti prime minister’s proposal for regional dialogue and cooperation, hoping that Kuwait could convince the reluctant parties to engage in talks as well.

Asked about Iran’s stance on the recent remarks by Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah about regional dialogue for the settlement of tensions, Saeed Khatibzadeh said Iran welcomes such a proposal.

“We think we’d be able to hold inclusive dialogue as soon as possible in the Persian Gulf region among the regional countries for stability and peace in the region,” he added.

The spokesman said Iran has already proposed initiatives for regional dialogue mechanisms, including the Hormuz Peace Endeavour (HOPE) put forward by President Hassan Rouhani.

Khatibzadeh said the principles of such negotiations have been specified in the previous initiatives, calling for “political determination” to implement them.

Iran hopes that the government of Kuwait would be able to persuade other countries that are not interested in holding talks to support its proposal.

Iran has always favored plans for regional dialogue and will continue to do so, he emphasized.

Addressing the 75th UN General Assembly, the Kuwaiti PM invited Iran to dialogue and cooperation with Arab countries to end regional tensions.

“Kuwait once again calls on the Islamic Republic of Iran to take serious measures to build trust in order to start talks based on respect for the sovereignty of countries and non-interference in the internal affairs of these countries,” he said.

Iran, Kuwait Stress Constant Consultations

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Senior diplomats from Iran and Kuwait called for the continuation of consultations between the two Muslim nations.

Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif and his counterpart in Kuwait, Ahmad Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah held a video conference meeting on Monday as part of the top Iranian diplomat’s routine regional consultations.

The two foreign ministers discussed issues of mutual interests, the mutual cooperation between Iran and Kuwait, and the latest regional and international developments.

They also called for the continuation of consultations between the two countries.

Describing bilateral and multilateral cooperation among the regional countries as a basic and perpetual necessity, Zarif said the interaction between Tehran and Kuwait City could grow in various fields.

In a telephone conversation with Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in April, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced Tehran’s readiness for collective cooperation to ensure regional and international peace and stability and also to cope with the coronavirus in the current delicate situation.

“We expect the friendly country, Kuwait, to adopt stances on the regional issues and also (against) the US’ inappropriate behavior,” Rouhani said.

Kuwait Speaks of Solidarity with Iran in Pandemic Combat

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait, Marzouq al-Ghanim expressed his country’s solidarity with Iran in dealing with the novel coronavirus pandemic.

In a telephone conversation with Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani on Saturday, Ghanim said the Kuwaiti and Iranian nations stand united in the battle with COVID-19.

He also sent warm regards from Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and wished the Iranian nation success.

Back in March, Kuwait gave a donation of $10 million to Iran to help the efforts to contain the coronavirus.

The number of people infected with coronavirus in Iran has exceeded 80,000 and the death toll has risen to 5,031. In Kuwait, the number of positive cases stands at 1,751 with 6 deaths.

Foodstuff export to Kuwait to begin

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Commerce and Industry Ministry of Kuwait announced that the country will resume foodstuff imports from Iran, which have been stopped due to the spread of coronavirus.

Kuwaiti Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industry Abdullah Al-Afasi said the country’s decision is part of efforts to supply goods and foodstuff to Kuwait’s central markets, IRNA reported.

Over the past few days, Kuwait’s markets have been faced with a shortage of some goods and foodstuffs as well as a surge in prices.

Kuwait had banned imports of agricultural products from Iran after the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

During an emergency video conference meeting of the ministers of commerce of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council’s member states on Thursday, Kuwait proposed the establishment of a foodstuff security network to guarantee the food security of the Persian Gulf states.

The coronavirus, which causes a respiratory disease, emerged in the central ‎Chinese city of ‎Wuhan in ‎Hubei Province late last year and is currently affecting a ‎large number of countries ‎and territories across ‎the globe. It has infected and killed ‎people in a large number of ‎countries. ‎

The virus has infected 665 in Kuwait, killing one, according to worldometers.info.

Kuwait Aids Iran with $10 Million to Fight Coronavirus

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A top diplomat of Kuwait said his country would give a donation of $10 million to Iran to help the efforts to contain the coronavirus epidemic.

In a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday morning, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah expressed solidarity with the Iranian government and nation in the battle with the coronavirus epidemic and unveiled plans for a donation of $10 million to Iran for the fight against COVID-19.

For his part, Zarif expressed gratitude to the Kuwaiti government and nation and described the war on the virus as a global issue that requires regional and international cooperation.

Zarif also denounced the unilateral and illegal sanctions the US has imposed on the Iranian nation, and called on Kuwait to participate actively in the global campaign for ending and defying those inhumane sanctions.

In a telephone conversation with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the UK Dominic Raab on Monday, Zarif called on London not to follow the cruel and illegal sanctions the US has imposed on Iran.

Last week, Zarif sent a letter to Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, denouncing the US’ sanctions as a major obstacle to the Islamic Republic’s fight against the coronavirus and urging that such unilateral and illegal sanctions should end.

Khalid Al-Jarallah: Kuwait, Iran relations continues

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Kuwaiti Deputy FM Khalid Al-Jarallah stressed that his country’s ties with Iran are continuous.

In reply to a question regarding the recent meeting between Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference, Al-Jarallah said there is continued communications with Iran and visits by Iranian officials to Kuwait, Elnashra reported.

He noted that it is normal that the two ministers hold meetings, describing their talks as “positive and constructive”.

Khalid Al-Jarallah said the two ministers touched upon the situation in the region and the ties between the two countries.

“We think that these meetings are good for the region and improving the situation,” he stressed.

Al-Jarallah reiterated Kuwait’s continued mediation to reduce tensions in the Persian Gulf region, saying “we are hopeful that the situation will be resolved.”

Iranian Prisoners Extradited from Kuwait

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Nineteen Iranian prisoners returned home from Kuwait to serve the rest of their sentences in the Islamic Republic based on an extradition treaty between the two countries.

The prisoners in Kuwait were transferred onto Iranian officials hands on Friday night to serve the rest of their sentences in their homeland.

The men were extradited to the Islamic Republic after the follow-up efforts made by the Islamic Republic Embassy in Kuwait.

The Kuwaiti officials handed over the convicts to the representative of Iran’s judicial authorities.

Iran and Kuwait have been implementing an agreement on the extradition of prisoners since 2004, which allows Iran nationality prisoners in Kuwait and Kuwaiti inmates in Iran to return to their respective countries and complete their prison terms at home.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran defeated hosting Kuwait 28-24 at the 2020 Asian Men’s Handball Championship on Monday.

Team Melli will play Qatar and Korea Republic in Group 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

Group 1 includes Bahrain, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, while Iran are in Group 2 along Qatar, South Korea is and Kuwait.

The 2020 Men’s Handball Championship of Asia is the 19th edition of the championship held under the aegis of Asian Handball Federation at Kuwait City, Kuwait from Jan. 16 to 27.

It acts as the qualifying tournament for Asia in the 2021 World Men’s Handball Championship in Egypt.
