TEHRAN (Iran News) – The son of US District Court Judge Esther Salas was fatally shot and her husband critically wounded when a gunman dressed as a FedEx driver entered her home near North Brunswick, NJ, Sunday afternoon, according to local media.

Salas herself was reportedly unharmed in the attack, the New Jersey Globe reports. Daniel Anderl, Salas’ 20-year-old son, was killed. Her husband, Mark Anderl, a criminal defense attorney, and former assistant Essex County prosecutor, reportedly underwent surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The FBI in Newark tweeted that it was “investigating a shooting that occurred at the home of Judge Ester Salas” and that the bureau was “looking for one suspect.”

A New Brunswick Police dispatcher told NPR that he could not confirm any details of the incident, but confirmed an ongoing investigation.

Salas, the first Latina to serve as a federal district judge in New Jersey, was nominated to her current position in 2010 by President Barack Obama.

The Globe said it was not immediately clear whether Salas, who it said had received threats in the past, was the target of the shooting. She has presided over high-profile cases, including the 2013 fraud trial of The Real Housewives of New Jersey stars Joe and Teresa Giudice.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted late Sunday: “Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts at this time as they cope with this senseless act.”

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, said: “I know Judge Salas and her husband well, and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to NJ’s federal bench.”

“My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,” Menendez was quoted by the Globe as saying.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Joshua Kelsey, was believed to be driving a car that was stolen from the scene of the first slaying Wednesday night, Houston police said in a post on Twitter. The shootings appear to be drug-related, Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner said, AP reported.

“We need to remove him off the street immediately,” Finner said.

The first shooting happened at about 8:15 p.m. and left one man dead and another person injured, Finner said. The gunman then forced his way into a home and fatally shot a 60-year-old man, Finner said.

He then drove to another house about 9 p.m. and fatally shot a man, police said.

Names of the dead and additional details about the circumstances of the shootings weren’t immediately released.

TEHRAN – A shooting erupted from a high-rise luxury condominium in Reno, a city in the US western state of Nevada, in an echo of the Las Vegas massacre in October that left 59 dead, as a gunman took a female hostage and began firing inside the condo and on the street Tuesday night.

According to Reno Police Department, the incident began shortly before 7:00 p.m. Tuesday (0300 GMT Wednesday) with the suspect, identified only as a man in his 20s, opening fire from the eighth floor of the building and continuing to shoot for more than 20 minutes, Xinhua news agency reported.

Responding to the incident, police, a SWAT team and the Washoe County Sheriff’s helicopter barricaded the shooter in the building along with the hostage and closed the city’s downtown, where many casinos are located, till midnight.

The local KOLO TV station reported that the suspect was shot by police and died on the way to the hospital. Other reports said it could not be determined if the man had been shot by police or the death was self-inflicted.

“Thankfully no reports of injuries to citizens or officers or deputies,” Reno Police tweeted after the incident, without providing details about the shooter or his motive.

The TV station also reported that 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas mass shooter who killed 58 concert-goers before turning the gun on himself, owned a unit in the condominium complex.
