TEHRAN (Iran News) – Global coronavirus cases surged past 15 million on Wednesday, according to a Reuters tally, with the pandemic gathering pace even as countries remain divided in their response to the crisis.

In the United States, which has the highest number of cases in the world with 3.91 million infections, US President Donald Trump warned: “It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better.”

The top five countries with the most cases are rounded out by Brazil, India, Russia, and South Africa. But, the Reuters tally shows the disease is accelerating the fastest in the Americas, which account for more than half the world’s infections and half its deaths.

Globally, the rate of new infections shows no sign of slowing, according to the Reuters tally, based on official reports.

After the first COVID-19 case was reported in Wuhan, China, in early January, it took about 15 weeks to reach 2 million cases. By contrast, it took just eight days to climb above 15 million from 13 million reached on July 13.

Health experts stress that official data almost certainly underreports both infections and deaths, particularly in countries with limited testing capacity.

The official number of coronavirus cases at 15,009,213 is at least triple the number of severe influenza illnesses recorded annually, according to World Health Organization data, while the death toll of more than 616,000 in seven months is close to the upper range of yearly influenza deaths.

With the first wave of the virus still to peak in several countries and a resurgence of case numbers in others, some countries are reintroducing strict social distancing measures while others relax restrictions.

Stung by low approval ratings for his handling of the epidemic and downplaying the risks during the early stages, Trump made a significant shift in rhetoric on Tuesday, encouraging Americans to wear a face mask.

While the epidemic worsened in the United States, Trump’s focus ahead of a presidential election in November has been on reopening the economy, and governors in the hard-hit states of Texas, Florida, and Georgia continue to push back hard against calls for stricter restrictions.

In Brazil, more than 2.15 million people have tested positive including President Jair Bolsonaro, and more than 81,000 people have died. While Bolsonaro has played down the outbreak, its scale has made Brazil a prime testing ground for potential vaccines.

India, the only other country with more than 1 million cases, reported almost 40,000 new cases on Wednesday. Having been keen to reopen its economy, India is now facing the twin challenge of combating the pandemic and massive flooding in the country’s northeast.

Two ministers in South Africa’s cabinet were admitted to hospital with COVID-19, as Africa’s most-industrialized country counted a total of 372,628 confirmed cases and 5,173 deaths.

Other countries are reintroducing restrictions in response to fresh outbreaks.

In Spain, the number of people allowed on Barcelona’s beaches was limited after crowds flocked to the seaside over the weekend despite advice to stay home.

In Australia, residents of Melbourne, the country’s second-biggest city, were ordered to wear masks in public from Wednesday after the country reported a record 501 new cases.

Officials in Canada were closely watching a spike in cases as the economy reopens, attributing the rise in part to large numbers of young people gathering in bars.

China, meanwhile, announced that passengers on inbound flights must provide negative COVID-19 test results before boarding, as authorities seek to reduce the risk of imported cases amid increased international travel.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Coronavirus pandemic deaths have surged over 150,000 worldwide with nearly a quarter of them in the United States.

Evidence is mounting that social distancing successfully slowed the pandemic after more than half of humanity – 4.5 billion people – were confined to their homes, AFP reported.

Governments around the world are now grappling with when and how to ease lockdowns that have crippled the global economy, even as the COVID-19 death toll climbs further in hard-hit countries.

In many countries, official data includes only deaths reported in hospitals, not those in homes or nursing homes.

The US accounts for nearly a third of the 2.2 million coronavirus infections reported globally. The country has recorded the most confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 680,000 detected infections. Spain is in second place with around 188,000 cases, followed by Italy, Reuters reported.

The US has also recorded around 37,000 deaths, more than any other nation, followed by Italy, Spain, and France, which have all been ravaged by their own outbreaks.

Deaths in Africa

Virtually no corner of the world has been left untouched, with deaths in Africa passing 1,000 overnight.

Nigeria announced the death of President Muhammadu Buhari’s top aide on Saturday, the highest-profile person to succumb to the virus in Africa’s most populous nation.

And much of the world’s 260 million Orthodox Christians were also preparing to mark their Easter celebrations without attending mass.

The Russian Orthodox church has asked the faithful to mark the occasion at home, even though many places of worship will remain open, while services in Turkey will be closed to the public and broadcast on the internet.

Daily projections ordered

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to provide daily forecasts of the spread of the virus as Russia recorded almost 5,000 new cases in a single day, Reuters reported.

Coronavirus infections in Russia began rising sharply in April after reporting far fewer infections than many western European countries in the outbreak’s early stages.

On Saturday, Russia’s official tally of coronavirus cases was 36,793, a record overnight rise of 4,785, and death toll rose by 40 to 313.

Signs that the outbreak could be easing in parts of Europe prompted Switzerland, Denmark, and Finland to begin reopening shops and schools this week.

Germany’s Health Minister Jens Spahn said infection rates had “sunk significantly” after 3,400 deaths in his country, which is now beginning the delicate task of lifting some restrictions without triggering a secondary outbreak.

Some small shops will be allowed to reopen Monday, and some children will return to school within weeks.

Parts of Italy also began emerging from lockdown, with Venice residents strolling around quiet canals.

But Japan, Britain, and Mexico all expanded their current movement restrictions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Global number of confirmed COVID-19 cases was approaching 2 million on Tuesday, with nearly 120,000 confirmed deaths, according to data compiled by the US Johns Hopkins University, as in Southeast Asia, leaders linked up by video to plot a strategy to overcome the virus crisis.

In the US, the recorded death toll topped 23,500, according to NBC News’ tally.

On Monday evening, President Donald Trump used the daily White House coronavirus briefing to air his grievances, telling reporters that “everything we did was right,” nbcnews.com reported.

Lockdown measures in Europe as the global cases of COVID-19 rises

Italy – the hardest-hit country in Europe – slightly eased some restrictions Tuesday, allowing bookstores and shops selling children’s clothing to reopen. However, in neighboring France, President Emmanuel Macron said the lockdown would extend until May 11.

Austria cautiously eased confinement measures Tuesday as the virus deaths appeared to start leveling off in several hard-hit countries, though the world’s top health body, the World Health Organization, reignited warnings against lifting lockdowns too fast.

Austria followed Spain is slowly reopening some sectors, AFP reported.

The number of people infected with coronavirus in Germany has also “stabilized”, the public health chief, Lothar Wieler, said Tuesday, as politicians prepare for talks on when to end the lockdown measures used to slow the disease’s spread.

By midnight, 125,098 people in Europe’s most populous country had tested positive for coronavirus, according to Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) data.

More than half – around 68,000 – went on to recover, while almost 3,000 have died.
