Iranian Heavyweight Wrestler Hadi Determined to Olympic Medal

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian heavyweight wrestler Parviz Hadi is going to win a medal at the next year’s Olympic Games.

The 125kg freestyler has won two Asian Games gold medals and three gold medals at the Asian Championships but has not yet won an Olympics medal.

Hadi, who participated in a ceremony in Tehran on Tuesday to collect and dispatch packages of food for families affected by the coronavirus pandemic, has said he’s determined to claim a medal at the prestigious event.

“First of all, I hope the Iran league will start as soon as possible since the competition will help us to prepare for the world championships. We have started to train from June and I think we need to wrestle to stay fit,” Hadi said in an interview with IRNA.

“League will help us to prepare for the world championships and Olympic Games and it also is our profession and we need to wrestle to make money,” he added.

“I have dedicated much of my life to wrestling and will have to my best to win a medal in the next year’s Olympics,” Hadi concluded.

Alireza Karimi on recovery track

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian freestyle wrestling star Alireza Karimi who injured some three months ago is now continuing his individual training as he hopes to get recovery to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

He was injured in late December 2019 at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup held in Bojnurd, northeast Iran. Doctors used a non-aggressive PRP therapy combined with special training to treat his injury.

Now as the country is battling with the novel coronavirus outbreak, all the sports events and training have been canceled which includes that of wrestling teams that were preparing for the Olympics qualifying events.

However, Alireza Karimi is carrying out individual recovery training in his hometown, Karaj. “Wrestlers have to prepare themselves for the Olympics and should not waste the time; therefore, I’m trying to not abandon training by doing it in Karaj for now,” he told Mehr News Agency.

He said that he is gradually recovering from the knee injury and has just returned to the mat.

“Unfortunately, the virus has messed up everything, including the national team’s camps. We still have not gained the Olympics quota in three weight categories which include my own category (97kg). I hope we can reach the ideal conditions after getting through these days and depart for the Olympics after securing all the remaining quotas.”

Officials of the Iranian Wrestling Federation and coaches of national freestyle and Greco-Roman teams are due to hold a meeting today with the Sports Ministry authorities on required camps and training ahead of the Olympics.

Iran’s Alireza Karimi wins silver medal at 2019 Wrestling World C’ships

In the final of 92 kg division of the 2019 Wrestling World Championships (WWC), Alireza Karimi took on an American opponent and lost 4-0 to take the second place on the podium.

Karimi’s silver was the second medal for the Iranian team in this round of world championships after a bronze by Yunes Emami.

With these two medals, Iran is in third place with 51 points after Russia and Kazakhstan with 115 and 75 points, respectively.

The 2019 World Wrestling Championships are being held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan from 14 September to 22.

Iran, which participated in the event with its U23 team, conceded a 9-1 loss to the host and finished the event as vice-champion.

The United States won Japan 6-4 in the bronze contest.

Earlier in the group stage, Iranian wrestlers hammered Mongolia 9-1 before defeating the reigning champion, the United States, 5-5 on classification points and then Georgia 8-2.

The event was held from March 16 to 17 at Yakutsk, Russia.

Iranian wrestlers bag 2 golds at UWW Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov tournament

Hassan Yazdani won the first gold for Iran in the 86kg category after defeating Belarussian Ali Shabanau in the final contest. The Iranian champion defeated Lebanese Domenic Michael, Akhmed Adamovitch Magamaev from Bulgaria, Kazakhstan’s Azamat Dauletbekov, Russian Ruslan Abdulaev and Slovakian Boris Makoev on his way to the final showdown.

Parviz Hadi bagged the second gold medal for Iran after defeating Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khotsianivskyi 6-4 in the 125kg final match. He beat American Michael Joseph Kosoy, Chinese Zhiwei Deng, Nicholas Edward Gwiazdoski from the USA and Hungarian Daniel Ligeti.

Reza Yazdani won a bronze medal in the 97kg category by defeating Russian Igor Alekseevitch Ovsiannikov 8-4.

The UWW Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov tournament, organized by Bulgarian Wrestling Federation, is awarding UWW Ranking Series points which in turn will determine the top four seeds at the 2019 World Championships in Kazakhstan.
