TEHRAN (Iran News) –The secretary of Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme Council of Free Trade-Industrial and Special Economic Zones negotiated with the officials of the free trade and special economic zones of Uzbekistan about the establishment of a joint free zone between the two countries, during a two-day visit to Tashkent.

As reported, Hojatollah Abdolmaleki participated in the international investment meeting of Uzbekistan, which was held in the presence of the president and other high-ranking officials of this country and heads of international and regional financial organizations and institutions.

By visiting several free and special zones of Uzbekistan, the Iranian official discussed the benefit and use of joint capacities and opportunities for investment and trade between the two countries

Two weeks ago, Abdolmaleki announced that Iran is negotiating with 17 countries for the establishment of joint free zones and said by setting up these free zones, trade and investment will be facilitated.

He named Russia as one of the countries in this due.

In mid-March, the deputy head of the Free Zones High Council said that Iran and Iraq have reached an agreement to form a joint free trade zone on the border of the two countries in the near future.

According to Ahmad Jamali, the decision for establishing the mentioned zone was made during the two countries’ fifth Joint Economic Committee meeting in Baghdad.

Underlining the fact that three of Iran’s major free zones are located near the Iraqi border, Jamali noted that along with the joint zone, these four free trade zones can play a significant role in boosting the trade exchanges between the two countries.

The establishment of free trade zones (FTZs) in Iran dates back to the Iranian calendar year 1368 (March 1989 – March 1990) following the fall in the country’s oil income in the preceding year which prompted the government to promote non-oil exports.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – It was late in the spring that Russian President’s special representative, the CEO of Lotus Special Economic Zone of Russia’s Astrakhan Mr. Sergey Milushkin, Deputy Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Mr. Oleg Savchenko and their entourage had different meetings with Vice-President and Secretary of the Supreme Council of Free and Special Economic Zones Mr. Saeed Mohammad and during the meetings both sides called for broadening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with reliance on capacities in Iran’s free zones.

According to reports, after those meetings Russian President Vladimir Putin ratified the law for the additional protocol to the free zone agreement between Eurasian Union and Iran.

This agreement includes essential trade laws between Eurasian Economic Union and Iran and it is very close to the WTO laws. In the agreement both sides are committed to reduce or even remove custom tariffs and other non-custom problems for some goods in line with encouraging economic cooperation between the two sides.

Mohammad termed creation of a joint free zone between Iran and Russia as one of the future goals of the council and emphasized that according to the plans, this will materialize in near future.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An Iranian official in charge of free trade and special economic zones said the value of exports from those areas to other countries reached a total of $17 billion in the year ending March 19.

Secretary of Iranian Free Zones High Council Morteza Bank said that special economic zones (SEZs) and free trade zones (FTZs) had also sent some $5 billion worth of their goods and products to mainland Iran over the past Iranian year (ending March 19), reported Press TV.

Bank said that manufacturing and business schemes were thriving in special and free zones like never before, adding that the number of new jobs created in those regions exceeded 36,000 in the year ending late March.

He said the government aims to finish a total of 310 key projects in SEZs and FTZs till March 2021 to add between 40,000 to 45,000 new jobs in those areas.

Bank said a bulk of new investment injected into free and special zones normally come from private Iranian investors, adding a total of nearly $1 billion worth of new investment had been carried out in those regions over the past calendar year to set up various manufacturing and business schemes.

He said, however, that foreign direct investment into Iranian SEZs and FTZs had decreased last year to stand at $140 million with American sanctions being a main reason.

Iran’s High Council of Free Trade and Industrial and Special Economic Zones has been in charge of efforts and government plans to increase manufacturing output in those regions where firms and businesses enjoy lower tariffs and duties.

Interest in Iranian SEZs and FTZs has grown substantially over the past years as the country has been shifting away from oil revenues to boost manufacturing and trade, especially in areas more favorable to investors.

The country aims to reach a target of nearly $40 billion worth of exports for non-oil goods and services in the next two years.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Parliament of Iran has approved plans for launching five new free trade zones (FTZ) in the north and east of the country.

The Parliament allowed the government to pave the ground for developing two major FTZs in Sarakhs and Dogharoun, areas on the border with Afghanistan, Press TV reported.

Dogharoun, the gateway for official trade between Iran and Afghanistan for more than a century, will be developed as Iran’s largest FTZ in an area of around 8,700 hectares, said reports in the local media.

Establishing the zones in the eastern province of Khorasan Razavi is expected to help the local economy in the normally underdeveloped regions across the border between Iran and Afghanistan as more investment will be attracted to the FTZs due to eased restrictions governing such areas.

According to the parliamentary bill passed on Monday, the Iranian government will also launch three FTZs in the northern province of Mazandaran, a hub for agriculture where exports of farming products to countries to the north of Iran have increased over the past years.

The three new FTZs will be developed in port cities on the Caspian Sea, namely Amirabad, Fereydunkenar, and Noshahr, said the media reports.

Some of the five Iranian locations approved to become FTZs had already served as special economic zones (SEZ).

Iran’s Guardian Council, which vets legislation by Parliament, must endorse the bill passed on new FTZs before it can become law.

Announcing the new economic and trade zones in Iran come as the country seeks to boost trade with neighboring countries in a bid to access new sources of foreign currency and offset the impacts of a series of American sanctions that have hampered its oil sales.
