TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani Yesterday said that the country is able to enrich uranium up to 90 percent if it desires.

Making the remarks addressing the Cabinet meeting, he said “AEOI can enrich uranium by 20% and 60% and if one day our reactor needs it, it can produce 90-percent uranium.”

Noting that Iran has shown that it can resolve its major issues with the world via negotiation, Rouhani said after the withdrawal of the US from the JCPOA, Iran decided to test other solutions when holding talks did not work.

He added that by pulling out from the JCPOA, Trump sought to kill the deal and make Iran’s economy collapse but none of his dreams came true.

The president said that the Westerners wanted to shut down Fordow nuclear site but today, AEOI can enrich uranium by 20% and 60% and if need, it can produce 90-percent uranium.

Rouhani also said that one of his administration’s most important objectives was to safeguard the nation’s rights which were achieved by the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA.

Rouhani was speaking in the wake of July 14, a date which coincides with the signing of the JCPOA in 2015. The date has been designated as the day of Constructive Dialog and Interaction in Iran’s national calendar.

He said that some political factions believed that Iran’s disagreements with the world powers and the IAEA on the nuclear issues weren’t solvable through negotiation and they would be solved possibly only through the battlefield.

However, he elaborated, his administration managed to achieve an agreement through negotiation with world powers only within the first 100 days into the office and to stop U.S. and international sanctions against Iran and cancel all nuclear-related UN Security Council resolutions against the nation.

As a result of those efforts, Rouhani stressed, Iran’s inflation rate fell below 10 for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017 which was unprecedented in Iran’s history.

The President also underlined that Iran’s ability to resist sanctions pressure after the former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA was acquired thanks to those three years.

Trump ceased U.S. participation in the deal in early 2018 and resumed all sanctions lifted by the deal. He also imposed many other sanctions in a so-called ‘maximum pressure campaign against Iran.

Rouhani said the Israeli regime, Saudi Arabia, extremist U.S. politicians and Iranian opposition made an alliance to deceive Trump by convincing him that Iran’s political system and the economy would crash within 24 hours after killing the JCPOA.

But their calculations proved to be wrong and Trump had to wait for three years, ending up seeing all his anti-Iran policy fail.

President Rouhani also hinted that the current administration wouldn’t continue talks for the possible return of the US to the JCPOA and thus removing all sanctions against Iran, leaving the task for the new administration of president-elect Seyed Ebrahim Raisi who assumes office on August 5.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that Iran has mastered a level of knowledge that it is enriching uranium up to 63%, and that it can enrich uranium at any percentage it desires.

Rouhani made the remarks while speaking at an inauguration ceremony unveiling the Defense Ministry plans.

The president reiterated Tehran’s long held position that Iran’s nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes, saying production of nuclear weapons is unacceptable.

“In the issue of defense in our country, we neither need weapons of mass destruction, nor we seek to acquire this weapon, nor do we consider it permissible; this is an explicit fatwa of the Supreme Leader.”

Rouhani said Iran is developing new technologies for domestic use.

He added, “Our nuclear power is not for developing nuclear weapons. The United States and Europe should know this and understand that Iran’s nuclear activity is completely peaceful and our enrichment is for the needs of the country in medical and energy sectors.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency announced on May 13 that based on the samples taken from the Natanz nuclear site, Iran has enriched uranium up to 63%.

Iran decided to enrich uranium to 60 percent purity after Mossad operated an act of sabotage at the Natanz nuclear site.

Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian deputy foreign minister who is leading the Iranian negotiating team in Vienna, announced on April 13 that Iran has sent a letter to the IAEA declaring that the Islamic Republic intends to start enriching uranium up to 60% purity.

On April 14, President Rouhani stated that the 60% enrichment is a response to mischiefs against Iran. “The fact that we have stated that we will operate IR-6 centrifuges in Natanz or we will increase enrichment to 60 percent, this is the answer to your malice. You cannot conspire against the Iranian nation and commit crimes in Natanz. When you commit a crime, we cut your hand.”

The decision was announced by Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Rabiei in a press conference also attended by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi and the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi.

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

“Today we will surpass the 3.67% limit on uranium enrichment. The purity level will be based on our need, and that will be officially realized today,” Rabiei said.

Araqchi said the second phase begins as the 60-day deadline Iran had given the other JCPOA parties is over without Iran’s demands being fulfilled.

“As we announced in the first phase, we will longer remain committed to the uranium enrichment level, and this will be announced to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini in a letter by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif today,” Araqchi said.

Araqchi also said that the United States can take part in the meetings of the signatories to the Iran nuclear deal — from which Washington has withdrawn — on the condition that it lifts sanctions against the country’s oil and banking sectors.

Along with two other senior officials, Araqchi detailed Iran’s latest move in scaling back its commitments under the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), after the European signatories missed a 60-day deadline to offset the adverse impacts of the unilateral US pullout.

“The U.S. has withdrawn from the JCPOA and cannot use any of its mechanisms, but it can attend the the P4+1 meetings on the said conditions. Our first condition [for the U.S.] is [the lifting of] oil and banking sanctions. Other sanctions would be considered as well,” Araqchi, who was a senior negotiator in the talks that led to the JCPOA, said in his Sunday remarks.

He stressed, however, that the deal would under no circumstances be renegotiated and that it should be implemented precisely as it is.

Araqchi said there would be diplomatic visits in the coming days, including in the form of a JCPOA ministerial meeting.

“We do not want trips that serve as political shows; we want ones that get things done toward rectifying the present situation regarding the JCPOA,” he said.

He went on to say that the government has told all Iranian organizations not to pin hope on the European financial mechanism, known as INSTEX, which was meant to facilitate trade with Tehran under the US sanctions.

He further noted that the Islamic Republic has pinned no hope and reliance on any special country, but it will use every opportunity and capacity in the present situation.

“In this economic warfare launched by Donald Trump, we will try every path and our main channels are China, Russia, Turkey, India, and neighbors.”

Araqchi said Iran has new economic interactions and plenty of initiatives with all of them. “One of these routes is Europe and one of them is INSTEX.”

“We have worked very well in foreign policy and we have good partners. So many good things have been carried out in the neighborhood, and we would not let the United States reach its goals. We will certainly make the U.S. disappointed, and this time they will be disappointed through our economic and defense capabilities and Washington will have to back off at the end,” concluded Araqchi.

Kamalvandi also noted that the country needs enriched uranium for its power plants, research, and propulsion, which need various levels of enrichment.

“What we’re doing today is meant to provide the enrichment level we need for the fuel of our power plants, and the level of enrichment can go up based on the orders we get,” he noted.

“The amount of our enriched uranium stockpiles is also increasing and the pace of increase is growing,” he added.

He also noted that the country “does not need the fuel of Tehran research reactor for now, but it can go to that point whenever it wants.

Iran’s announcement came after its 60-day deadline to Europe to compensate for the US’ withdrawal from the accord came to an end. Tehran says the decision has been enshrined in the nuclear deal and is in accordance with articles 26 and 36 of the nuclear deal.
