28th ELECOMP Exhibition Opens in Tehran

TEHRAN (Iran News) According to IRNA, during the four-day event, the exhibition will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., welcoming technology professionals, enthusiasts, and investors. Entry is also open to the general public, offering access to the latest achievements in the country’s information and communications technology sector.

This year’s ELECOMP hosts hundreds of domestic companies alongside 18 international exhibitors, showcasing their newest products, services, and innovations across fields ranging from artificial intelligence and blockchain to big data, advanced hardware, and specialized software.

Featured Sections and Highlights: ELECOM Stars: Spotlighting startups and new businesses, with networking opportunities; ELECOM Games: Presenting the latest digital games and entertainment platforms; ELECOM Talks: Hosting expert panels, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions; and AI Pavilion: For the first time, dedicated booths and panels on cutting-edge technologies in machine learning and natural language processing.

Among this year’s innovations is a chatbot guide designed to help visitors quickly access exhibitor information, booth locations, and side events.

On the sidelines of the Minister of Communications emphasized the government’s legal obligation under the Seventh Development Plan, stating that Iran must raise the digital economy’s share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 10 percent.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to the opening of the 28th ELECOMP exhibition, Minister Sattar Hashemi noted that the core of the digital economy lies in software and knowledge-based services. He added that relying on domestic expertise will minimize the impact of external pressures such as the so-called “trigger mechanism” on the sector’s growth.

Hashemi explained that hardware infrastructure falls into two categories: one produced domestically without major challenges, and another dependent on technology-owning countries. “In the latter case, necessary measures have been taken to mitigate the potential impact of the trigger mechanism, and efforts are ongoing,” he said.

The minister referred to the Supreme Leader’s emphasis on building a “strong Iran,” stressing that knowledge-based and technology-driven companies play a central role in delivering high-quality services to the public.

“Experience has shown that relying on these capacities gives meaning to the concept of a resilient economy,” Hashemi said. “Despite undeniable restrictions in recent years, the determination of youth and elites has created significant new capacities.”

Highlighting ELECOMP’s role, he added: “This event hosts more than 500 domestic technology companies along with several international firms. Their presence marks an important and positive development for the country. We will continue this path with determination—it is not only our legal duty but also our belief, and our young people have proven capable of achieving great things that were unimaginable just a few years ago.”

Hashemi pointed to progress in the eSIM project, explaining that several operators have entered the field in a timely manner. “Some operators have already begun registering users, and the Communications Regulatory Authority is actively pursuing this service so it will soon be available to the public,” he said. “We must pursue modern technologies with determination, and we are confident that Iranian youth will succeed on this path.”

He also addressed the forthcoming September Internet Quality Report, noting that a system has been developed to provide information by operator, province, and city.

Hashemi emphasized that the ministry has taken active steps across all areas of the digital economy. “There are concerns from stakeholders, especially platforms, but we are in dialogue with them and coordinating with other ministries to address both regulatory and operational issues,” he explained.

He noted that the Digital Economy Task Force has recently become more cohesive and active. At its latest session, representatives from the insurance and stock exchange sectors participated to hear the concerns of platforms, and follow-up discussions are ongoing.

Responding to questions about public expectations for better telecommunications and internet services following the recent 12-day disruption, Hashemi said: “Improving quality is a top priority. I hold weekly in-person meetings with operators to review concerns and resolve issues case by case. The Communications Regulatory Authority has also been tasked with organizing multiple meetings and securing commitments from operators to ensure a scheduled program for quality enhancement.””ELECOMP”

He identified 5G expansion and the deployment of fiber-optic networks as two main pillars of improvement. “Of course, the impact of restrictions on service quality cannot be denied, but these issues are being pursued through multiple parallel efforts,” he added.

The minister concluded by expressing hope that with sustained oversight of mobile operators, citizens will experience tangible improvements in internet and phone services by the Persian New Year (Nowruz).

As its name suggests, ELECOMP is a major event in the electronics and computer industry, however, over the past five editions, organizers decided to allocate a part of the exhibition to emerging startups under the title of ELECOM Stars.

And now startups manifest their growth during recent years by presenting their products and services in seven halls of the exhibition.

Startups open new windows of opportunity for removing social, economic and even environmental challenges worldwide and Iran is not an exception.

The motivation and innovation of young entrepreneurs, who are the founders of startups, is a great chance, which should not be ignored by officials and organizations.

ELECOM Stars hosts different ranges of startups from emerging to well-established ones with reasonable prices in order to encourage all the people active in the field of the innovation ecosystem.

Officials are concerned about the attendance of innovators as well as visitors in this edition of the exhibition due to the hard economic situation as a result of the sanctions.

However, startups which fill seven halls of the exhibition show the dynamicity of the innovation ecosystem in these hard days.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the exhibition, the head of the Iranian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Guild Organization, Mohammad Baqer Asna-Ashari, said that many startups which attended the previous edition of ELECOM Stars requested bigger stands in this edition.

“This shows the growth of startups during a year and also the role of ELECOMP in their activities,” he said.

Startups are stars in the sky of smart Iran

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said during the opening ceremony of the event that as its name suggests, ELECOM Stars is home to the startups which shine like stars in the sky of smart Iran.

He pointed to No-Afarin, a scheme introduced by the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to support startups last week, with the slogan of ‘Smart Iran, brighter future’, saying, “Today, many tasks can be done by a click and this digital transformation should be considered by managers in order to increase their efficiency and expand markets.”

In the near future, the digital economy would be the prevalent kind of economy worldwide, he said.

“Despite U.S. sanctions, young entrepreneurs in the field of ICT can use the national digital economy in order to expand markets.”

ELECOMP, hope for a better future

As a gathering of the innovation ecosystem of Iran, ELECOMP promises a better future which is realized by the motivation and energy of the young generation.

Startups and their services have a direct impact on the everyday life of people and this is one of their strong points.

Being a part of the private sector, their efficiency is an important factor for their consistency and it is linked with their benefits for the public.

As you can see, startups provide a market which benefits entrepreneurs and people at the same time and perhaps this is the key to their growth during recent years.

The good news is that the government has recognized their unique potentialities and abilities and plan to support them with no direct intervention, an approach that paves the way for the development of the innovation ecosystem in the future.

ELECOMP 2019

In addition to ELECOM Stars, ELECOM Talks, ELECOM Trends, and ELECOM Games are other parts of the event, which runs until July 21.

This edition of ELECOMP has also designed ELECOM Tours in order to provide special programs for visiting the exhibition as well.

This edition of ELECOMP also provides a user-friendly place for startups that bring disability solutions to the market. Tech breakthroughs that empower people with disabilities have set up stands with special features.

Since its first edition in 1995, the event has been providing a unique opportunity for businesses to increase their share of this huge and ever-growing market.

The event provides an opportunity for companies to share knowledge, build vendor relationships and work with prominent companies, active in the field of electronics and computer to enhance their market spread.

The Qatari official attended the 25th Iran International Electronic, Computer & E-Commerce Exhibition (ELECOMP) on July 18 alongside counterparts from Iraq, Russia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

“I had attended ELECOMP exhibition in 2014, but today I see many changes and I am glad to see startup companies at the exhibition. The areas of cooperation between Iran and Qatar include oil, gas, energy and food sectors, and we would like to expand relations in communication technology. In our turn, we invited our Iranian partners to the exhibition the be held in late October in Qatar,” he added.

“In regards to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, I can say that Qatar is expanding infrastructures for the event. I have seen many companies in the exhibition, which can help us. Cooperation in the field of ICT is very important. We face similar challenges and have similar plans for smart cities. There are relations at the governmental level, but we need to develop cooperation between private companies,” he said.

At a press conference during 25th ELECOMP exhibition, Iraqi Deputy Minister of Communications has commented on CT and electronic trade prospects with Iraq and other countries and spoke about Iran’s participation in Iraq’s mobile programs.

“We open the door for cooperation with Iran, we have ties with Jordan and want to expand cooperation with other neighboring countries, as Iraq conducts open door policy. We are just at the beginning of the IT road and need a lot of help to make the progress,” said the Iraqi official.

In total, representatives of 800 companies from 40 countries are participating in the ELECOMP exhibition.

ELECOM Trends is a new section at this edition of the exhibition, ELECOMP executive director Mehdi Heydari said on Monday, Mehr reported.

ELECOM Trends will focus on internet of things (IoT), smart city and artificial intelligence (AI), he said.

In comparison to the ELECOMP 2015, the number of startups has increased from 70 to 350, Heydari announced.

“A total of 45 game developer companies will also attend ELECOM Games, which will be held on the sidelines of the event,” he said.

Those who are active in startups can benefit from consultants during the event in a section named ‘accelerating chamber’, he added.

“We estimated that about 20 foreign companies will attend the event,” he said.

From 50 to 70 startups from seven countries will attend ELECOM stars of ELECOMP 2018, head of Iranian ICT Guild Organization Mohammad Baqer Asna-Ashari said in early June, IRNA reported.

ELECOMP 2018

ELECOMP is the biggest event in the Iranian electronics and computer market. Since its first edition in 1995, the event has been providing a unique opportunity for businesses to increase their share of this huge and ever-growing market, according to ELECOMP website.

A hall is dedicated to electronic government as a place in which state-run organizations can introduce their services to the visitors.

One of the major sections of the event is the startup competition dubbed “ELECOM Stars”, in which startup companies compete for a finance by Iran’s ICT Guild Organization.

The first ELECOMP hosted about 100 startups and the number rose to 450 in last year’s exhibition.
