TEHRAN (Iran News) – EUR/USD retreats to 1.2285 from a 33-month high of 1.2327 while Risk sentiment weakens, pushing stocks lower and the anti-risk dollar higher, and Democrats lead in Georgia elections triggers fears of greater regulation and high taxes. EUR/USD is losing ground, with the risk sentiment weakening on increased expectations for a Democrat-controlled US Senate. The currency pair is currently trading at 1.2288, having reached a high of 1.2327 early today. That was the highest level since April 2018. The pair has failed to keep gains above 1.23 in each of the previous four trading days.

The latest rejection above 1.23 is accompanied by losses in the Asian equities and the US stock futures. Major news agencies such as The New York Times are predicting a Democrat victory in Georgia elections. “Both Democrats remain heavily favored, despite their deficit in the tabulated vote. They’re favored to win the vote left to be counted by 9 to 10 points,” The New York Times’ Nate Kohn tweeted a few minutes ago.

A Democratic sweep will give the party control of the Senate and pave the way for President-elect Joe Biden to push through greater corporate regulation and higher taxes, and bigger fiscal stimulus.

Markets are currency focusing on prospects of greater corporate regulation and higher taxes, as evidenced by the stock market losses. EUR/USD may extend losses if the risk aversion worsens during European hours.

Data-wise, the focus will be on the German Consumer Price Index for December. The data due at 13:00 GMT is expected to show the cost of living rose 0.7% month-on-month in December versus November’s 1% drop. A bigger-than-expected rise is needed to help the pair establish a foothold above 1.23. The US FOMC minutes, due at 19:00 GMT, could also inject volatility into forex markets.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi branded President Donald Trump the most dangerous person in the history of America.

In an interview with Variety, the Speaker of the House opened up about her hopes for the nomination process and her frustrations with the Trump administration.

“I have real problems with this president because he doesn’t tell the truth, he doesn’t honor the Constitution and he’s harming children,” Pelosi said, The Independent reported.

“The greatness of America is such that we will withstand what (he) has done and move on from that. I feel confident about our ability to do that.”

Pelosi went on to say she wanted the Democrats to “winnow” down the field of candidates so they could focus on fighting Trump because the country “can’t withstand another four years”.

“We have the most dangerous person in the history of our country sitting in the White House,” Pelosi said. “That’s different from what happened in 2016. People thought Hillary would win so they didn’t all turn out. Nobody could possibly think that somebody like Donald Trump could be elected president of the United States. But if you don’t turn out, those who do turn out will call the shots.”

Pelosi, the highest-ranking Democrat, has publicly insisted the party would rally around any chosen nominee but has privately contended with concern within the party about Sanders’ radical agenda and its likely impact on congressional races.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Democratic prosecutors declaring “no one is above the law” went head to head with White House lawyers as closing arguments wrapped up at President Donald Trump Senate impeachment trial, setting the stage for his likely acquittal on Wednesday.

“You can’t trust this president to do the right thing,” chief House prosecutor Adam Schiff said in an emotional speech on the Senate floor on Monday at the end of the two-week trial, AFP reported.

“Truth matters little to him,” the California lawmaker told the 100 members of the Senate who will decide Trump’s fate. “What’s right matters even less and decency matters not at all.

“He will not change and you know it,” Schiff said of the former New York real estate tycoon turned politician. “Now do impartial justice and convict him.”

White House lawyers flatly rejected the arguments that Trump – just the third president in US history to be impeached by the House of Representatives – should be removed from office by the Senate for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

“The president has done nothing wrong,” White House counsel Pat Cipollone said, calling the impeachment by the Democratic-led House “purely partisan and political.”

“We put our faith in the Senate,” he said.

“End the era of impeachment once and for all,” Cipollone said, arguing that the American people – not the Senate – should decide whether Trump remains in office.

Jay Sekulow, another of Trump’s lawyers, said the House impeachment was “reckless” and urged the Senate to acquit.

“The bottom line is that the president’s opponents don’t like the president and they don’t like his policies,” Sekulow said.

The Senate is to vote at 4:00 pm (2100 GMT) on Wednesday and the Republican president is all but certain of being acquitted.

Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate to 47 for the Democrats, but a two-thirds majority, or 67 senators, is needed to remove a president from office.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump on December 18 for withholding $391 million in military aid to Ukraine to demand that Kyiv open an investigation into his potential November election rival, Democrat Joe Biden.

Schiff urged senators to find “courage to stand up” to the president.

“When the president tries to coerce an ally to try to help him cheat in our elections and covers it up we must say enough,” he said. “He has compromised our elections and he will do so again.”

Colorado lawmaker Jason Crow, another House prosecutor, said impeachment was an “extraordinary remedy.”

“It is in the Constitution for a reason,” he said. “In America, nobody is above the law, even those elected president of the United States.”

Crow told the senators their votes would echo through history.

“What you decide on these articles will have lasting implications for the future of the presidency, not only for this president but for all future presidents,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Closing out their case, House Democrats warned in Trump impeachment trial that the president will persist in abusing his power and endangering American democracy unless Congress intervenes to remove him before the 2020 election.

They then implored Republican senators to allow new testimony before rendering a final verdict, AP reported.

“Give America a fair trial,” Rep. Adam Schiff, the lead Democratic impeachment manager, said Friday. “She’s worth it.”

Schiff delivered Democrats’ final remarks in the Senate trial after three days of methodical and impassioned arguments detailing charges that Trump abused power by asking Ukraine for politically motivated probes of political rivals, then obstructed Congress’ investigation into the matter.

The opening arguments appear to have done nothing to shake Republicans’ support for Trump or persuade enough centrist GOP lawmakers to call for new witnesses, including Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton. In his final appeal to lawmakers and a divided nation, Schiff argued that a guilty verdict in the Senate is the only remedy left to curb what he called the “’ imminent threat” posed to the nation by Trump’s unconstitutional impulses.

“He is who he is,” Schiff declared. “You know it’s not going to stop. … It’s not going to stop unless the Congress does something about it.”

The moment of history was apparent, only the third impeachment trial of a US president, as were the partisan views of the Trump presidency and the effort to end it.

When Schiff cited a news story with someone close to Trump saying any Republican voting with Democrats would have their “head on a pike,” GOP senators in the chamber began murmuring, “That’s not true.”

The House impeached Trump last month, accusing him of abusing his office by asking Ukraine for politically motivated probes of Biden and other matters while withholding military aid from a US ally that was at war with bordering Russia. The second article of impeachment accuses him of obstructing Congress by refusing to turn over documents or allow officials to testify in the House ensuing probe.

Said Trump attorney Jay Sekulow, “We’re going to rebut and refute, and we’re going to put on an affirmative case tomorrow.”

Republicans are defending Trump’s actions as appropriate and are casting the impeachment trial as a politically motivated effort to weaken him in his reelection campaign. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, and eventual acquittal is considered likely.

Before that, senators will make a critical decision next week on Democratic demands to hear testimony from top Trump aides, including Bolton and acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, who refused to appear before the House. It would take four Republican senators to join the Democratic minority to seek witnesses, and so far the numbers appear lacking.

With Chief Justice John Roberts presiding, Friday’s session opened with an overarching case from Democrats that Trump’s actions with Ukraine were not unique but part of a pattern of “destructive behavior” now threatening the core foundations of American democracy.

Schiff told the senators that Trump has shown repeatedly that he is willing to put his personal political interests above those of the country he is sworn to protect.

When the House started investigating his actions, Democrats said, Trump blatantly obstructed the probe. Even then-president Richard Nixon, they argued, better understood the need to comply with Congress in some of its oversight requests.

The impeachment trial is set against the backdrop of the 2020 election, as voters assess Trump’s presidency and his run for a second term. Four senators who are Democratic presidential candidates are off the campaign trail, seated as jurors.

The House mounted its Trump case after a government whistleblower complained about his July 2019 call with Ukraine. The House relied on testimony from current and former national security officials and diplomats, many who defied White House instructions not to appear.

Evidence presented in the House probe has shown that Trump, with lawyer Rudy Giuliani, pursued investigations of Biden and his son, Hunter, who served on a Ukrainian gas company’s board and sought a probe of a debunked theory that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 US election.

It’s a storyline many in the president’s camp are still pushing. Giuliani, in an appearance Friday on “Fox & Friends,” insisted he would present evidence on his new podcast.

At close, Schiff predicted the Trump team will try to distract senators from the case, in part by lodging personal attacks against all the House prosecutors. He reminded senators what is at stake and read the articles of impeachment one more time.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton launched a scathing attack on presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, her rival for the 2016 Democratic nomination, telling a documentary that “nobody likes him.”

The former US first lady, senator, and secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, also refused to say whether she would endorse Bernie Sanders if he becomes the Democratic Party’s nominee to run against Republican President Donald Trump in November’s US presidential election.

Her comments on Tuesday generated anger among Sanders’ supporters, who called on Clinton to support the candidate the party backs in their bid to remove Trump from the White House.

“He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him,” Clinton says in a four-part documentary due to air in March.

“Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done. He was a career politician,” Clinton, the spouse of former President Bill Clinton says in the documentary.

Sanders, a senator from Vermont, is among the leading candidates in the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

Sanders has been steadily climbing in popularity this year and is now tied with former Vice President Joe Biden for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination among registered voters, according to a Reuters/Ipsos national poll released this week.

The poll shows that Sanders’ standing does not appear to have been hurt by his recent confrontation with Senator Elizabeth Warren, another presidential hopeful, over his views of women and politics.

Sanders nearly defeated Clinton four years ago in an acrimonious, months-long battle for the party’s nomination. Clinton won that race but lost to Trump. She has criticized Sanders and his supporters for not sufficiently backing her in the presidential vote.

Interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter about the documentary, Clinton stopped short of saying she would support Sanders if he won the nomination this year.

“I’m not going to go there yet. We’re still in a very vigorous primary season,” she said.

But in a tweet on Tuesday night, Clinton backtracked on her position, saying she would endorse Sanders if he wins the Democratic nomination.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump during his campaign speech has used misleading data to claim he’s created an economic “boom,” while Democratic candidates seeking to replace him twisted the facts in their latest presidential debate.

Trump distorted his record on the economy and fell back on an old false claim about making Mexico pay for his border wall that served as a counterpoint to Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate, The Associated Press said in an analysis on Wednesday.

During giving his speech at a reelection campaign on Tuesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Trump claimed he’s created a “blue-collar boom” for low-income workers in the US.

“More than 300,000 people under Obama, 300,000 people, left the workforce. Under just three years of my administration, 3.5 million people have joined the workforce,” Trump said at the rally.

The AP said Trump is wrong about former President Barack Obama’s economic record. More than 5 million people joined the US labor force during Obama’s presidency, according to Labor Department figures.

Trump also claimed that the updated trade between the US, Canada and Mexico will pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border because of economic benefits he predicts will come from the agreement.

The USMCA deal, which will replace NAFTA, has been signed by the three nations but not yet ratified. The agreement preserves the existing liberalized environment of low or no tariffs, with certain improvements for each country.

However, nothing in the trade agreement would cover or refund the wall construction cost or require a payment from Mexico, the report said.

Instead, Trump is assuming a wide variety of economic benefits that can’t be quantified or counted on. For example, he has said the deal will dissuade some US companies from moving operations to Mexico and he credits that possibility as a payment by Mexico.

Turning to the US economy during the rally, Trump said: “The lowest-paid earners are reaping the biggest, fastest and largest gains. Earnings for the bottom 10% are rising faster than earnings for the top 10%, proportionally.”

The AP said Trump’s claim that the biggest pay hikes are going to the poor is also misleading. The top 10% of US earners saw the biggest raises of any income bracket over the past year, according to the US Labor Department.

When the Labor Department looked at the gains by quartile, weekly earnings grew at faster rates at the top levels than the bottom 25%.

“We’ve created 7 million jobs since the election including more than 1 million manufacturing and construction jobs. Nobody thought that was possible,” Trump said.

But the AP said those figures are less impressive than what Trump claims. Government figures show that the job gains under Trump over the past three years were lower than during the final three years of Obama’s presidency.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US Senate Democrats said they had enough votes in the Republican-controlled Senate to pass a resolution that can limit power of Trump to wage war on Iran without congressional approval.

Democrats leader in Senate, Chuck Schumer and Senator Tim Kaine, the measure’s sponsor, said they had at least 51 votes for a joint resolution that would limit the power and require Trump to seek congressional authorization for military action against Iran, Reuters reported.

To become law, the measure must pass the House of Representatives and either be signed by Trump or garner a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress in order to override his veto.

Many members of Congress, including some of Trump’s fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, have been pushing the administration for more information about the assassination this month of top Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad’s airport.

Trump did not inform Congress about the strike until after it took place and then, according to many lawmakers, his administration kept back too much information about the reason for the strike or the legal justification.

Criticism grew as Trump and his top officials have offered shifting justifications for the drone strike. Trump himself fuelled controversy by saying on Twitter that “it doesn’t really matter” whether Gen. Soleimani posed an imminent threat.

Kaine said four Republicans – Senators Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Susan Collins and Todd Young – had agreed to support the war powers resolution he introduced on Jan. 3.

In a statement, Collins said Kaine’s resolution would let Trump respond to aggression from a hostile nation or repel an attack. “It simply makes clear that only the Legislative Branch may declare war or commit our armed forces to a sustained military conflict with Iran,” she said.

Senate leaders are working out the timing of a Senate vote, likely next week, which is complicated by Trump’s Senate impeachment trial starting within days.

The House passed legislation known as a concurrent resolution last week, which called for an end to military action against Iran unless Trump obtained Congress’ approval.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US filmmaker Michael Moore says that President Donald Trump could lose the popular vote by 5 million, but still may win in the 2020 election.

“I believe whoever the Democrat is next year is going to win by 4 to 5 million popular votes,” the Oscar Award documentary filmmaker and activist has told Democracy Now.

“The problem is… if the vote were today, I believe, he [Trump] would win the electoral states that he would need because living out there, I will tell you, his level of support has not gone down one inch.”

“In fact, I’d say it’s even more rabid than it was before because they’re afraid now. They’re afraid he could lose because they watched his behavior.”

“They are voracious in their appetite for Donald Trump,” Moore added, “that’s the bad news.”

In 2016, Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, secured the popular vote with a sizable lead of 2.8 million votes, tantamount to 2.1 percent of the total vote.

Nonetheless, Trump comfortably won the election by winning key states, thanks to the so-called Electoral College system.

The system overrides the popular vote, which gives the victory to the candidate winning the most ballots. It instead makes 538 electors across different states that are chosen based on each state’s representation in Congress, liable for electing the chief executive. Therefore, if a contestant secures at least 270 of the electoral votes, they have won the presidential race.

Opponents say the system counters the fundamentals of a democratic republic, calling for its abolition.

In his interview, Moore also warned Democrats against choosing a so-called moderate candidate like “Hillary Clinton,” saying they might lose again.

“If we go that route, it’s guaranteed we will lose the Electoral College. We will win when we put somebody on that ballot that excites the base – women, people of color, young people,” he said.

A new poll released last week showed Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders had overtaken former Vice President Joe Biden in head to head matchup with Trump.

The survey, conducted between December 18 and 19 by Ipsos/Reuters, found that 39 percent of US vote favored Sanders over Trump, compared to 37 percent who preferred Biden over the Republican president who could win.

Moore has supported Sanders for the Democratic nomination but did say he would be satisfied with Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts as the candidate.

His remarks came as the House of Representative impeached Trump on December 18 over allegations that the president had abused his power by withholding $391 million in US security aid to Ukraine as leverage to pressure Kyiv to conduct an investigation that would benefit him politically.

And according to a new poll released last week, a majority of Americans approve of Trump impeachment.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US 2020 presidential, House Representative Tulsi Gabbard has been urged to resign from her post in the wake of defying the Democratic Party and voting “Present” in the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

A former Democratic governor of Hawaii called on the presidential hopeful on Monday to immediately resign from her seat in the lower chamber of US Congress.

Neil Abercrombie, who led the state from 2010 to 2014, personally phoned Tulsi Gabbard for voting in favor of Trump.

“I’ve left a detailed message for her as to what I was thinking, what I was doing and what I hoped she would do,” Abercrombie told Politico in a phone interview following his announcement. “I’m sure she pays attention to her voicemail.”

Abercrombie is a former longtime House member, who has himself resigned from Congress.

“Trying to do my job in Washington and run for office, another office, in Hawaii was just too difficult. I couldn’t do it,” he recalled. “I had hoped maybe I could do it, and it became obvious that I couldn’t. So I resigned my seat.”

In a historic vote on Wednesday, the lower chamber of US Congress voted to impeach the president over-pressuring Ukraine for personal political gain.

“Then she didn’t vote on the budget for next year… I thought, ‘That’s it.’ Regardless of what her intentions were or what her motivations are, she’s not able to do the job for the 2nd District,” Abercrombie said. “The bottom line for me is simple… I believe that the only really honorable thing to do and sensible thing to do and politically forthright thing to do is to resign the seat, let us have a special election and then see whoever wins that seat whether they can do a good enough job to win a primary in August and a general election next November.”

The majority of the lawmakers supported both articles of tulsi gabbard, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The abuse of power article was passed on a 230-197 vote and the obstruction article was passed by 229-198.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Democrats unveiled two impeachment charges Tuesday against US President Donald Trump after weeks of arguing there is overwhelming evidence that the US leader abused his office and deserves to be removed.

If the two impeachment charges – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – are approved by the full House of Representatives in a vote expected next week, it would put Trump in the historic position of being the third US leader ever impeached and placed on trial in the Senate, AFP reported.

“Our president holds the ultimate public trust,” said House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler.

“When he betrays that trust and puts himself before country, he endangers the constitution, he endangers our democracy and he endangers our national security.”

Nadler, in a solemn and deeply serious moment for the nation, was joined by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the US Capitol to lay out the charges facing Trump.

The president is alleged to have wielded the power of the presidency for personal and political gain by pressuring Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 US election.

His accusers say he conditioned vital military aid and a much-sought White House meeting on Kyiv announcing it would investigate Democratic former vice president Joe Biden, who is the frontrunner to challenge Trump in the 2020 election.

He also pressed his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to probe a debunked Kremlin conspiracy theory that it was Kyiv and not Moscow, that interfered in the 2016 US election.

The charges also focus on Trump’s efforts to block Congress from fully investigating his actions – which Democrats see as a violation of its constitutional right to conduct oversight of the executive branch.

“The evidence of the president’s misconduct is overwhelming and uncontested,” said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, who oversaw weeks of public hearings in which witnesses including Trump administration officials and US diplomats testified about the pressure on Ukraine.

“To do nothing would make ourselves complicit in the president’s abuse of his high office,” Schiff said, adding that Trump’s “misconduct goes to the heart of whether we can conduct a free and fair election in 2020.”

Trump, who has long assailed the Democrats for pursuing impeachment, maintained his fighting posture early Tuesday, tweeting that the effort to oust him as “sheer Political Madness!”
