Tehran, Damascus in Talks for Reopening Embassies

TEHRAN (Iran News) Mahajerani began by reiterating apologies to the public and industrial sectors for the difficulties caused by recent energy shortages. She stressed that the government is working hard to help the nation overcome these challenges. She also highlighted the success of the “Two Degrees Less” campaign, initiated by the President, aimed at energy conservation. Mahajerani acknowledged that such efforts are difficult, especially in the winter and summer months, but emphasized that the support from citizens has been commendable.

The spokesperson also mentioned ongoing energy infrastructure improvements, such as the completion of 150 kilometers of new highways by the spring of 2025, and plans to enhance gas and electricity distribution to prevent further shortages. The government is working to ensure that the economic hardships do not further reduce the purchasing power of citizens.

Mahajerani discussed the painful reality of needing to urge citizens to conserve energy during the extreme seasons, especially given the shortages of both electricity and gas. She explained that these energy limitations are negatively impacting industries, and the government is working to mitigate the effects. Notably, recent power outages have saved about 5% of gas consumption and 3% of electricity use, although the government hopes to achieve a 10% reduction in energy consumption through continued public cooperation.

The spokesperson also addressed the economic concerns of the public, acknowledging that Iran’s economy has long caused hardship for the population. Mahajerani shared that the government has proposed a 20% increase in salaries, as well as tax exemptions, to alleviate the financial strain on citizens. Additionally, the government is focusing on producing more sustainable energy, such as solar power, and is working towards a goal of generating 30,000 megawatts of solar energy.

Regarding Iran’s diplomatic ties, Mahajerani confirmed that the government is in talks with Syria about reopening their embassies. This move is part of broader diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting peace and countering terrorism in the region. She added that Iran and Syria share a strong commitment to safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and political stability.

In relation to Egypt, Mahajerani highlighted President Pezeshkian’s recent participation in the D-8 summit in Egypt, which provided an opportunity for dialogue with leaders of developing Muslim-majority countries. She emphasized that Iran and Egypt can play a crucial role in establishing peace and stability in the region, benefiting all nations.

Responding to concerns about the currency situation, Mahajerani acknowledged the public’s worries but stressed that these economic reforms, including currency unification, are necessary to address the structural issues in the economy. These changes aim to reduce corruption, promote domestic production, and stabilize the currency. The spokesperson also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to long-term economic reforms, including increased transparency and bolstered infrastructure.

In conclusion, Mahajerani emphasized that the government is working on several national projects, including a comprehensive plan to tackle inflation and create jobs, with the aim of improving the country’s economic outlook over time.

TEHRAN (Iran News) The strikes occurred Monday evening around 5:18 pm local time (14:18 GMT), with Israeli warplanes targeting “civilian sites south of Damascus,” resulting in material damage, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited a military source as saying.

“The Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights,” the source added.

In a statement, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the assault as “criminal” and urged United Nations member states to take “urgent action” to halt “Israeli aggression” and hold those responsible to account.

“The Syrian Arab Republic condemns the aggression launched by the Zionist entity this evening,” the statement read. “Syria calls on United Nations member states to take urgent and firm measures to stop the Israeli aggression and hold its perpetrators accountable for their crimes.”

According to reports, the strikes hit three locations in the Sayyidah Zaynab area, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Damascus. The first targeted the Kaou Sudan junction, an area crowded with displaced people who had fled recent violence in Lebanon. The second strike hit near a hotel southeast of Sayyidah Zaynab, and the third targeted nearby farmhouses.

Two people were reportedly killed, and five were seriously wounded in the strikes.

Early Tuesday, the Israeli Air Force claimed it had targeted what it called “Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters” in Syria, including a post on social media detailing the attack’s objective, adding that the attack aimed to degrade Hezbollah’s intelligence capabilities.

The Sayyidah Zaynab area, known for its Shiite shrine, has been subject to prior Israeli strikes.

Israel has conducted hundreds of air strikes in Syria in recent years, typically refraining from acknowledging responsibility. However, these attacks have intensified since October 7, when the Israeli regime began a genocidal war against the people of the Gaza Strip following Palestinian resistance groups’ attack in retaliation for decades of Zionist aggressions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met in Damascus on Saturday.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in the Syrian capital at the head of a delegation earlier today.

Upon arrival at Damascus airport, Amirabdollahian was accorded welcome by his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad.

Mikdad in a press statement described the visit of Abdollahian as very important that comes after a lot of local, regional and international developments.

“We stand by Iran in the nuclear file and we support its stance in this regard,” Mikdad said.

In Damascus, Amirabdollahian said that the Zionists are seeking to destabilize Syria and increase Syrians’ problems.

Upon his arrival in Damascus, Amirabdollahian told reporters that the Syrian president’s recent visit to Tehran marks a new milestone in relations between the two states.

Referring to the importance of his visit to Syria, the top Iranian diplomat added that Iran and Syria are in a new phase of comprehensive cooperation, including in various economic and trade areas.

He highlighted that today is a great opportunity to discuss with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mikdad the latest situation in relations between the two states.

Iran strongly condemns the attempts of the Zionist regime and their aggression on the territorial integrity of Syria, Amirabdollahian stressed, adding that the Zionists seek to destabilize and increase the problems of the people who are returning to their cities and homes in Syria along with the sanctions imposed against the Syrians and Resistance.

The Syrian people, government, and leadership are acting strongly in defending the territorial integrity of their country, he said.

Iran understands Turkey’s concerns on security issues and strongly opposes any military attempts with any justification, he underscored, adding that Iran works to resolve the existing misunderstandings between Turkey and Syria through diplomacy and political dialogue.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Roads and Urban Development Minister Rostam Ghasemi says Iran is determined to expand its trade ties with Syria.

Speaking upon his arrival in Damascus, Ghasemi said that end of war in Syria is a new beginning for new round of economic ties between the two countries especially Iran and Syria have been together for years in fighting the international terrorism.

With the war almost over in Syria, Tehran and Damascus are determined to reach real trade agreements and expand their economic relations, the minister reiterated.

Ghasemi is leading a high-ranking economic and trade delegation to Damascus and was welcomed by Syria’s Economy and Trade Minister Mohammad Samer al-Khalil at Damascus International Airport.

“The end of the war in Syria is the beginning of a new era of economic relations between the two countries, especially given that Iran and Syria have been beside one another throughout the era of fighting international terrorism,” Ghasemi said.

During his three-day visit, the Iranian minister is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as well as the country’s prime minister and ministers of economy and trade, transport, social affairs and labor, and housing and construction.

The Syrian industry, construction, and infrastructure will be the main focus of the bilateral talks.

Khalil, for his part, hailed the inseparable ties between the two nations and expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by the zealous Iranian youth on his country’s soil.

“In Syria, we want extensive cooperation with Iran,” the Syrian minister stated.

“We hope that the meetings of Mr. Ghasemi and his accompanying delegation with the Syrian officials will lead to agreements aimed at reaching economic and trade partnerships between the two sides,” he added.

Last month, Syria’s Minister of Industry Ziyad Sabbagh invited Iranian companies and advanced industries to invest in the Arab country’s process of reconstruction and recovery from the Western-sponsored war on Syria, which began in 2011.

The Syrian minister called on Iranian companies to “have partnership and cooperation with the public and private sectors in the Syrian Arab Republic and use the benefits provided by the law, which gives a great opportunity for investment in Syria” to further promote bilateral ties.

Days later, Iran’s vice president for parliamentary affairs, Mohammad Hosseini, said Tehran was ready to implement reconstruction projects in Syria.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Exclusive exhibit of Iranian products kicks off in Damascus. The second exclusive exhibition of Iranian products was opened in the Syrian capital Damascus in a ceremony on Tuesday, IRNA reported.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by Iranian Industry, Mining, and Trade Minister Reza Fatemi Amin and Syrian Economy and Foreign Trade Minister Mohammad Samer Al-Khalil.

As reported, the exhibition features 164 Iranian companies active in a variety of fields including medical equipment, medicine, construction, architecture, agriculture, livestock and poultry, oil, gas and petrochemicals, police and security equipment, as well as food, water, and electricity.

The steel industry, informatics, doors and windows, elevators, shop equipment and chain stores, motorcycles, automotive industry, textile industry, home appliances, and banking and insurance are also among the areas represented in the mentioned exhibition.

Speaking on the sidelines of the opening ceremony, Fatemi Amin expressed Iran’s interest in cooperation with Syria for reactivating the country’s economic and industrial potentials and restoring the economy.

He further announced the Islamic Republic’s readiness for joint investment in Syria to meet the domestic market needs and also to export to other countries in the region.

The first exposition of Iran in Syria after the defeat of the U.S.-backed ISIS terrorist group was held from December 25 to 28, 2018.

Over the past few years and since the end of the war in Syria, Tehran and Damascus have been taking major steps for expansion of mutual trade ties, and Syria has become one of the major focal points regarding the Iranian government’s plans for boosting non-oil exports to the region.

The two countries have been pursuing the implementation of a free trade agreement signed between the two sides back in 2010 after years of postponement.

According to Farzad Piltan, the director-general of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO)’s Office of Arabian and African Countries, the implementation of this agreement with Syria, which Fatemi Amin is scheduled to pursue during his visit to Syria, means that the two countries’ traders will be exempt from current export and import restrictions and bans in their exchanges.

Considering Syria’s efforts for reconstructing the country’s war-torn infrastructures in recent years, the construction sector has been one of the major areas that Iran has been focusing on for the expansion of ties with the Arab country.

Head of Iran-Syria Joint Chamber of Commerce Keyvan Kashefi has said that currently, commodity items in the fields of housing construction, bridge and dam construction, electricity supply, and technical and engineering services are at the top of the list of exports to this country.
