Worshippers were at Friday evening prayers when the explosion sent a ball of flames through the mosque in the central district of Narayanganj, Bangladesh emergency services said.

Investigators suspected a spark from an air conditioner — which came on after a power cut — set off the gas.

“Leaked gas entered the mosque,” Narayanganj fire chief Abdullah Al Arefin told AFP.

“When they shut the windows and doors and switched on the air conditioners there was an electricity spark that led to the explosion inside the mosque.”

The 12 who died were among 37 taken to a specialist burns hospital in Dhaka in critical condition, said hospital spokesman Samanta Lal Sen.

He added that all had suffered 70 to 80 percent burns.

Police said at least 45 people were injured by the blast and that people had spoken of smelling a gas leak.

In Bangladesh, safety regulations are often flouted in construction. Hundreds are killed each year in fires in the nation of 168 million people.

In February last year, an inferno in Dhaka’s old quarter killed 78 people. One month later, 25 people were killed when a blaze engulfed a Dhaka office block.

The fire, which broke out on Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm local time, has caused no injuries or deaths and has been brought under control, the head of Ajman police said.

The fire has reportedly struck the “Iranian souq”, which is home to dozens of traders and is considered a popular attraction in Ajman, drawing visitors from across the Emirates.

Parts of the market, which had been closed for four months due to coronavirus precautions, collapsed and were completely burned, Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah al-Nuaimi said in a statement carried by state news agency WAM.

The site is being dampened down and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, he said.

The fire came one day after a catastrophic explosion ravaged the Lebanese capital of Beirut, leaving at least 137 dead and over 5,000 others injured.

A truck bomb exploded outside the Safari Hotel, near Somalia’s Foreign Ministry, and lined with government offices, hotels, restaurants and shops. The blast injured over 200 people and death toll is feared to continue to rise.

The second explosion took place in the city’s Madina district two hours later, according to police.

Following the attack, Somali President Mohamed Farmaajo declared a three-day national mourning beginning on Sunday.

None of the local terror groups have claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, similar assaults in the country have been blamed on fighters from Al-Shabaab who have launched regular attacks on the city since 2011.
