TEHRAN (Iran News) – Daily air traffic at one of the airports in the Iranian capital of Tehran, mainly used for domestic flights, has returned to the levels prior to the coronavirus spread in the country.

According to a report by IRNA, the number of daily flights at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport has surged to 357, more than 35,000 passengers.

That indicates an almost sixfold increase compared to late March figures when air traffic at the airport had witnessed a significant decline due to the restrictions imposed by the Iranian government to curb the spread of the virus.

The number of the daily flights at the airport had declined to 90 – 5,000-7,000 passengers, during the Norouz holidays (March 20-April 1), marking the arrival of the new year in Iran.

The rise in the number of domestic flights could mean that Iranian airlines are well on their path to recovery despite the occurrence of the major crisis that is affecting the global aviation industry.

Authorities at Mehrabad International Airport said they are implementing a series of strict hygiene measures and protocols to protect passengers against the spread of the disease.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Thousands of Spanish Airbus employees gathered outside a factory near Madrid on Thursday, waving banners and chanting through face-masks, to protest against a restructuring plan that will see hundreds of jobs lost.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought air travel to a screeching halt, hammering demand for the planes and systems that Airbus produces. The company, which is 4% owned by the Spanish government, has said it will lay off about 900 workers in Spain as part of cuts of 15,000 jobs worldwide.

“We’re protesting because the company, taking advantage of this temporary situation of COVID-19, wants to get rid of 900 workers,” said Jose Luis Collado, who has worked at the company for 41 years, Reuters reported.

“This is a temporary situation. It’s going to pass and we don’t understand why we’re being thrown out on the street.”

From the factory, the protesters marched 2 km to Getafe’s town hall where the mayor gave a speech in support of the workers.

“For us it’s about defending our rights, defending Spain’s aerospace sector. It needs to be supported,” said Lorena Fernandez, another protester with 11 years at the company.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said at the beginning of this month that the government was working with Airbus to find ways to keep jobs in the country, but so far no details on any rescue plan have been released.

France and Germany will bear the brunt of the layoffs, with around 5,000 apiece. But the loss of 900 manufacturing jobs in Spain is nonetheless a blow for an economy that has been among the worst hit in Europe by the fallout from the pandemic.

Before the coronavirus crisis, Airbus was already planning to cut around 700 jobs in Spain.

In recent months Japanese automaker Nissan (7201.T) has said it will close three plants in Catalonia, while Alcoa (AA.N) is in the process of shutting an aluminum factory in the northwestern region of Galicia.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran is drawing up plans to offer discounts to some foreign airlines using its airspace, IRNA quoted a senior aviation official as saying, after a slump in flights due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Nasser Aqaei, the director of the Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company, said the discounts would go to the top eight airlines providing transit income as well as airlines boosting their flights by 20 percent, Reuters reported.

However, no general cut in fees are planned, he said.

Iran is one of many countries to charge so-called overflight fees, which are generally used to fund services such as air traffic control, weather data, and aeronautical information.

The planned discounts still have to be approved by the government, Aqaei said.

Iranian civil aviation authorities have said that flight routes to major destinations in the Middle East and in Asia would resume in the near future by other Iranian airlines.

Iran Air suspended all European flights in mid-March after tight restrictions were imposed on arrivals in major Western European countries because of the growing number of cases testing positive for the COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
