12,000 Flights Canceled During War and Ceasefire

TEHRAN (Iran News) In an interview with ILNA, Hamidreza Sanaei, Deputy for Aviation and International Affairs at the Civil Aviation Organization, provided an update on the current status of international flights at Imam Khomeini International Airport. He stated:

“Today, there will be 18 inbound flights to Imam Khomeini Airport, and an equal number of outbound flights will operate from this airport.”

Addressing concerns over the pricing of international flight tickets—which are not subject to regulated price ranges—Sanaei said:

“Yesterday, a meeting was held with airline executives to discuss price controls. The airlines themselves emphasized that even for international flights not covered by mandatory pricing, there should not be significant price increases.”

However, he pointed out that foreign carriers operating flights to Iran set their ticket prices purely based on supply and demand, and are not subject to any domestic pricing regulations.

Sanaei continued: “Despite the heavy financial losses during this period, domestic airlines have insisted that there will be no abnormal price hikes for international flight tickets.”

As a key measure to help keep ticket prices reasonable, Sanaei said the organization has been actively issuing flight permits to multiple foreign and domestic airlines:

“From the very first day of resuming international flights, we negotiated with an Arab-Iranian carrier to quickly return to Iranian routes, and we have already granted permission for 9 daily flights by this airline. By increasing the number of authorized flights, we aim to break price surges.”

He noted that the number of international routes is gradually increasing: “Currently, flights to Dubai and Turkey are operational, and flights to China and Oman will resume soon. Over time, all international routes will reopen, and we will issue permits for domestic airlines to operate on these routes without restrictions.”

Regarding the financial impact on airlines from canceled flights, Sanaei said: “The damages have been reported. During the period of war and ceasefire, about 12,000 flights were canceled. A precise calculation of financial losses is underway, and an initial report has been submitted to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.”

He added that assistance to airlines facing war-related losses is being pursued through decisions by the Cabinet: “The only legal basis we currently have is Article 63 of the Law on Government Revenue Collection, which states that airport charges can be waived during wartime. Beyond that, there are generally no permanent support provisions for such circumstances.”

Additionally, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar Airways have indicated they will restart flights to Iran from October 31 after suspensions due to regional security concerns, he said.

Chalandari dismissed foreign media reports of damage to the airport’s defense systems, clarifying that the Imam Khomeini Airport is a civilian passenger hub and houses no air defense systems. “There has been no damage to the airport or its surrounding area,” he stressed.

These remarks followed an announcement from Iran’s Air Defense Force earlier in the day, which reported intercepting Zionist attacks targeting military installations in Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam provinces.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The spokesman for the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran said on Friday that the flight restrictions imposed on a number of airports have been lifted and the situation has returned to normalcy.

All flights are now operating on schedule, the spokesperson said, calling on the passengers to call the airports for more information about the exact departure time.

Speculation ran rampant on Friday morning that the Israeli regime has attacked a number of sites in Iran’s central province of Isfahan after a series of explosions were heard in the province.

Officials denied the rumor immediately afterwards, saying the air defense units have gone into firing mode because of the high sensitivity of the air defense facilities in the current situation and “probably” because a number of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) have been detected.

In recent days, the Zionist regime has ratcheted up the rhetoric of military action against Iran after Tehran carried out a retaliatory operation against the Israeli military targets inside the occupied territories in response to a fatal airstrike that Israel launched on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Yemeni forces carried out fresh retaliatory attacks against Saudi Arabia, targeting military aircraft hangars at an airport in Jizan region and an airbase in Asir.

Two domestically-manufactured Qasef-2K (Striker-2K) combat drones struck designated targets inside Jizan airport, also known as King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz airport, as well as King Khalid airbase with great precision early Sunday, Spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces Brigadier General Yahya Saree said.

The attacks, he added, were a “legitimate response” to the Riyadh regime’s devastating military campaign and crippling blockade against Yemen.

Senior Yemeni officials have frequently warned that retaliatory operations will continue as long as Saudi Arabia presses ahead with its deadly aggression and all-out siege.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched the war on Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former President, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, back to power and crushing the popular Ansarullah movement. The war has taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories.

The United Nations estimated in late 2020 that the war had caused as many as 233,000 deaths in Yemen since 2015, including 131,000 from indirect causes such as lack of food and deadly disease.

According to the UN, at least 80 percent of Yemen’s 30 million people need some form of aid or protection.

Ansarullah, backed by the Yemeni Armed Forces and allied popular groups, has gone from strength to strength against the Saudi-led invaders, and successfully defended Yemen against the aggression, leaving Riyadh and its allies bogged down in the county.

Several human right groups and charities have accused the Western governments of prolonging the war in Yemen by permitting the sale of weapons and military equipments to the kingdom and its allies.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Daily air traffic at one of the airports in the Iranian capital of Tehran, mainly used for domestic flights, has returned to the levels prior to the coronavirus spread in the country.

According to a report by IRNA, the number of daily flights at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport has surged to 357, more than 35,000 passengers.

That indicates an almost sixfold increase compared to late March figures when air traffic at the airport had witnessed a significant decline due to the restrictions imposed by the Iranian government to curb the spread of the virus.

The number of the daily flights at the airport had declined to 90 – 5,000-7,000 passengers, during the Norouz holidays (March 20-April 1), marking the arrival of the new year in Iran.

The rise in the number of domestic flights could mean that Iranian airlines are well on their path to recovery despite the occurrence of the major crisis that is affecting the global aviation industry.

Authorities at Mehrabad International Airport said they are implementing a series of strict hygiene measures and protocols to protect passengers against the spread of the disease.

Iran to Receive New Planes

According To Iran News, Head of the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran said the country is going to get new passenger planes in the not too distant future.

Speaking to reporters in Payam Airport in the northern province of Alborz on Tuesday, Ali Abedzadeh said a series of suitable planes are going to join the Iranian fleet in the not too distant future.

He said the new aircraft will be used for domestic flights.

Arrangements have been made to operate flights between Karaj in Alborz province and the cities of Mashhad, Ahvaz, and Kish island, he further said.

Abedzadeh also unveiled plans for the gradual removal of restrictions on international flights.

“Foreign airlines are currently waiting for the signing of health protocols and conclusion of agreements among countries, so that they could carry passengers in accordance with specific health and medical protocols,” he added.

Iran received a total of 16 passenger planes after the 2015 nuclear deal took effect, including three from Airbus and 13 from Franco-Italian turboprop maker ATR.

The US decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and reinstate sanctions resulted in the collapse of about $38 billion in plane deals between Tehran and Western firms, with Airbus suffering greater damages than its US rival Boeing.

During a January 2016 visit to Paris by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Tehran signed a major contract with Airbus worth about $27 billion to buy 118 planes.

Later in June that year, Iran sealed another deal worth around $25 billion with the US aerospace heavyweight, Boeing, for the purchase of 100 passenger planes.

Iran’s Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhondi announced that although flights have resumed in Tehran’s airports after heavy snow caused flight cancellations, the return of the airports to normal conditions would take two or three days.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Monday night, Akhondi pointed to flight conditions at Imam Khomeini International and Mehrabad airports and said prior to the heavy snow, about 430 flights were operated in Mehrabad Airport and 220 in the Imam Khomeini International Airport on a daily basis.

Since Monday, 80 flights have been operated in Mehrabad and 20 in the Imam Khomeini International, he said.

The minister went on to say that although flights have resumed in the airports, returning to normal conditions would take two or three days.

The runways of Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport were dug out from under 70 centimeters (more than two feet) of snow, letting flights resume on Sunday morning.

After sweeping Iran’s west and north, a winter air mass lashed capital Tehran on Saturday night, grounding flights, shuttering schools, blocking highways, and above all surprising people to see heavy snowfall after ten years.

The snowstorm that blanketed much of Iran’s western and northern parts also caused power outages and rising gas consumption in some areas.

The snowfall has in the meantime raised hopes for better water reserves, as low precipitation had caused concerns about drought and a harsh summer in Iran.
