TEHRAN (Iran News) – Daily air traffic at one of the airports in the Iranian capital of Tehran, mainly used for domestic flights, has returned to the levels prior to the coronavirus spread in the country.

According to a report by IRNA, the number of daily flights at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport has surged to 357, more than 35,000 passengers.

That indicates an almost sixfold increase compared to late March figures when air traffic at the airport had witnessed a significant decline due to the restrictions imposed by the Iranian government to curb the spread of the virus.

The number of the daily flights at the airport had declined to 90 – 5,000-7,000 passengers, during the Norouz holidays (March 20-April 1), marking the arrival of the new year in Iran.

The rise in the number of domestic flights could mean that Iranian airlines are well on their path to recovery despite the occurrence of the major crisis that is affecting the global aviation industry.

Authorities at Mehrabad International Airport said they are implementing a series of strict hygiene measures and protocols to protect passengers against the spread of the disease.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ordered three ministries to formulate the necessary health protocols to allow for the resumption of inevitable foreign travels to or from Iran.

In a Saturday meeting with the chairpersons of committees of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani stressed the need for the formulation of detailed protocols to make it possible for Iranian or foreign nationals to make the necessary travels to Iran or leave the country amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The president assigned the Health Ministry to coordinate efforts with the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development to define the necessary health protocols relating to the travels and bring them into force after being ratified by the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters.

The new health protocols should allow for the necessary travels, which are mainly business travels for trade with other countries, and also for the repatriation of the Iranian citizens, Rouhani said.

The president also called on the Health Ministry and the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology to cooperate with domestic knowledge-based companies and support their plans for the production of the software and test kits for COVID-19 diagnosis.

He further assigned the Ministry of Health to use the internationally recognized criteria to categorize the country’s provinces and cities according to the status of the coronavirus outbreak, define three separate zones, and begin to enforce the necessary protocols for each category on the basis of the defined criteria.

The daily death toll from the novel coronavirus in Iran dropped for the fifth day in a row on Saturday, as nearly 56,000 positive cases have fully recovered from the disease across the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian authorities say air taxi services would be allowed for the first time in the country as demand for short-haul, on-demand services increase amid American sanctions that have affected the aviation industry.

An official in Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization said on Sunday that several companies had obtained initial permits for launching air taxi services across the country.

Morteza Dehghan said that regulations over the issue had been eased to allow import and operation of commercial aircraft capable of carrying 10 to 15 passengers.

He said the new laws are also meant to prevent major Iranian airlines and aviation companies from creating a monopoly in the provision of air taxi services.

“If someone wants to launch a company solely for air taxis, he would not need to have a fixed capital, technical and commercial structures and other requirements like a full-service airline,” Dehghan told the ISNA agency.

The official rejected claims that the launch of air taxi services in Iran would face serious difficulties because of the sanctions imposed on the country.

“There is no problem for the import of various aircraft including private jets,” he said, adding, “The companies and individuals would import the aircraft under any circumstances and even at the current difficult situations.”

The launch of air taxi services comes as many Iranian airports are currently running at low capacity.

Officials say more than 90 percent of domestic flights are processed via 15 major airports and 60 more airports are operating at super-low capacity.

The new services could also be seen as a bid to offset the impacts of the American sanctions on Iran’s aviation industry as Washington keeps preventing major global plane manufacturers to deliver aircraft ordered by Iran over the past few years.
