TEHRAN – Head of Iran Fisheries Organization says the total fishery products of Iran last year was 1.28m tons which is ahead of the Sixth Development Plan.

During a meeting, Mr. Nabiollah Khoon Mirzaee said that the most important issue in the fishery is production and the total production of fishery products last year was 1.28m tons which is ahead of the target set in the Sixth Development Plan.

He also pointed to the growth in fishery products in Iran since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, adding that the fishery product consumption per capita has grown in the country concurrent with the growth in production and it has increased from one kilo in 1979 to over 13 kilogram in 2019.

He emphasized that growth in production in the fishery sector is indebted to boosting infrastructures, studies and training the skilful workforce, stipulating that in all countries in the world, fishing and marine pressure is on breeding fisheries and Iran is pursuing this approach.

He noted Iran ranks first in fishing in the west of the Indian Ocean, stating that in fishing the aquatic animals, Iran ranks 25th in the world and 18th in breeding aquatic animals. He further said Iran ranks second in fishing tuna in the Indian Ocean and ranks first in fishing in the west of the Indian Ocean.

Khoon Mirzaee added that Iran ranks first in the world in producing trout in salty and sweet water and it ranks 14th in breeding shrimp while the country ranks third in producing meat of caviar fish and second in producing caviar in the world.

He said breeding shrimp in the country has grown significantly during President Hassan Rouhani’s governments, expressing hope that this year which has named surge in production, the country would see such a surge in the country.

He noted that in the recent 20 years, production in fishery products has seen an almost sustainable trend and fishery products have comparative advantage and high profitability.
