TEHRAN (Iran News) – US Soccer canceled a men’s national team training camp in Qatar two days before it was set to begin “due to the developing situation in the region” and amid fears of Iran’s retaliation for the assassination of Commander of IRGC Quds Force Major General Qassem Soleimani.
US Soccer Federation officials came to the decision Friday evening, less than 24 hours after a US drone strike assassinated General Soleimani in Iraq, Yahoo Sports reported.
The uncertainty of the situation led US Soccer officials to decide, wisely, against taking any risk, it added.
The US soccer national team will hold its annual January camp in Bradenton, Florida, starting Monday, January 6, instead of holding it in Qatar.
The report said several staffers had already traveled to Qatar, and are now scheduled to fly home.
General Soleimani, the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha’abi, and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday.
The White House and the Pentagon confirmed the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack ON Iranian convoy of the military heads was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.
