TEHRAN (Iran News) Araghchi, who is currently in the Netherlands to attend the annual meeting of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), met with van Weel on Tuesday.

The two sides viewed their agreement to resume political and consular consultation meetings as an important step toward enhancing bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, the top Iranian diplomat emphasized that, in light of the rapidly changing international environment and the prevailing atmosphere of confrontational unilateralism, all governments have a responsibility to strengthen the rule of law and must avoid complicity or indifference towards law-breaking and bullying behavior.

Referring to the pain and suffering experienced by the victims of chemical weapons used by Saddam Hussein’s regime against Iran, particularly in the city of Sardasht, Araghchi stressed the responsibility of European countries, including the Netherlands and Germany, which were directly or indirectly involved in supporting the former Iraqi regime’s chemical weapons program.

He called on these countries to cooperate earnestly in conducting independent judicial investigations into the individuals and entities complicit in Saddam’s war crimes against the Iranian people.

Araghchi, who landed in The Hague on Tuesday morning, addressed the 30th session of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention in The Hague.

In his speech, the top Iranian diplomat once again warned the international community about the threat posed by Israel, saying the regime in possession of a clandestine arsenal of nukes, is the only obstacle to a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
