Repatriation of undocumented Afghans from Iran rises by 30%: Official
TEHRAN (Iran News) The number of undocumented Afghan nationals voluntarily returning to Afghanistan via Iran’s Dogharoun international border crossing saw a 30% increase in October compared to the previous months of July and August, a local official said.
Hossein Jamshidi, the governor of Taibad, told IRNA on Sunday that undocumented Afghan nationals are now going directly to migrant camps in 11 provinces across the country to arrange their return to their homeland and are then directed to the Dogharoun land border in Khorasan Razavi Province.
Jamshidi noted that the number of deported and identified undocumented Afghans exiting through Dogharoun rose by 10% in October compared to the summer months. Since the beginning of the calendar year (starting on March 21), more than 1.2 million undocumented Afghan nationals have returned to their country through this border crossing.
He announced that the Dogharoun border crossing will soon be equipped with a biometric identification system for foreign nationals, the first of its kind among Iran’s border checkpoints.
