Trump–Putin Alaska summit grabs spotlight but delivers no Ukraine deal
TEHRAN (Iran News) The high-profile and much-anticipated meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin captured global media attention but concluded without any concrete agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
The Friday evening summit in the Alaskan city of Anchorage, marked by a splendid display including a red carpet welcome, strategic bomber flyovers, and an elaborate motorcade, was the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders after years of heightened tensions and conflict in Ukraine.
Trump warmly greeted Putin in what observers described as a symbolic gesture of dialogue between major powers.
After the meeting, both leaders provided brief statements to reporters. The US president called the meeting “extremely productive,” while his Russian counterpart described it as a useful discussion. “Trump–Putin”
Putin said Moscow is committed to ending the war, but made clear that the “primary causes” must be eliminated for an agreement to be long-lasting.
He also warned Ukraine and its European allies against throwing a “wrench in the works” and cautioned against attempts to use “backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress.”
Trump said “many points were agreed to” but noted that there remain sticking points with Moscow, including at least one “significant” one.
Meanwhile, no agreement on a ceasefire or pathway to peace was reached to end the three-year-long conflict in Ukraine. Analysts and media outlets widely assessed the encounter as a diplomatic failure, serving more as a political theater than negotiation. As part of his election promises, Trump had said he would end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of returning to office.
