TEHRAN (Iran News) In a post on his X account on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei commemorated the anniversary of adoption of the Genocide Convention.
“Genocide is defined as a specific set of acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group,” he said.
“Today is the anniversary of the UN Convention to Prevent and Punish Genocide on 9 Dec 1948; 76 years after the adoption of the Genocide Convention that avowed ‘never again’, a textbook case of genocide is unfolding before our eyes in occupied Palestine,” Baqaei added.
The spokesman cited a report from UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine Francesca Albanese presented to the Human Rights Council in October 2024, saying she had stated that “Israel is predicated on the goal of Palestinian erasure; its entire political system is directed towards this goal.”
“In fact genocide is part of a century-long project of eliminatory settler-colonialism in Palestine, a stain on the international system and humanity, which must be ended, investigated and prosecuted,” Baqaei noted.
“ICJ has already ruled, on 26 Jan 2024, that Israel must stop genocide and take all measures to prevent any acts contrary to the Genocide Convention,” the Iranian spokesman stated, adding, “The occupying regime has been defying all SIX ICJ’s provisional measures and continuing its barbaric genocide.”
“These days they (Israelis) are abusing the complicated situation in Syria for ever-expanding their genocidal campaign in Palestine,” he warned.
“It is high time that the int’l community stood up in support of humanity and put an end to this horrific century-long genocide,” Baqaei underlined.
