Iran, Saudi Arabia to Work on Agricultural Development
Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to enhance cooperation in the agriculture and natural resources sectors.

TEHRAN (Iran News) Iran’s Minister of Agriculture Gholamreza Nouri Qezelje has held meetings with senior Saudi officials on the sidelines of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh.

The Iranian minister said after negotiations with the Saudi agricultural officials, the ground has been prepared for the development of infrastructures of natural resources, environment and agriculture in cooperation between the two countries.

He noted that Iran and Saudi Arabia will establish technical working groups in the near future to work on joint programs relating to agriculture, natural resources and environment.

According to Qezelje, expert teams from the two countries will be holding the meetings of technical committees in Tehran and Riyadh to expand cooperation between the two nations.

The Iranian agriculture minister noted that he has also held talks with the agriculture and environment authorities from Pakistan, Iraq, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Syria on the sidelines of the event in Riyadh.

The UNCCD COP16 kicked off in Saudi Arabia on December 2 and will run until December 13.

The event has brought together leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society, and global stakeholders to accelerate progress in sustainable land management.

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), established in 1994, stands as the exclusive globally binding treaty –signed by 197 countries and the European Union- that establishes a connection between environmental conservation and sustainable land management for development.
