Azerbaijan Wants Perpetrators of Khojaly Genocide to Be Punished
Azerbaijan wants those who committed the Khojaly Genocide in 1992 to be brought to the justice and be punished.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Azerbaijan wants those who committed the Khojaly Genocide in 1992 to be brought to the justice and be punished.

Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran on Wednesday held a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly Genocide.

Speaking at the commemoration ceremony, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran Ali Alizada said that the war, crimes against peace and humanity, especially the Khojaly Genocide committed by Armenia as part of its policy of aggression against Azerbaijan are serious violations of human rights and international law.

According to the ambassador, the national legislatures of 17 countries, as well as 23 U.S. states have adopted resolutions and decisions condemning the genocide of civilians in Khojaly, calling it a crime against humanity.

“At the same time, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States adopted resolutions and statements strongly condemning the Khojaly genocide,” Alizada added.

During the first Karabakh war, on Feb. 25-26, 1992, the Armenian Armed Forces, supported by the 366th infantry regiment of Soviet troops, stationed in Khankendi city, committed an act of genocide against the population of the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly.

As many as 613 civil residents, including 63 children, 106 women, and 70 old people were killed in the massacre, 1,000 people were injured, and 1,275 were taken, hostage.

When asked what Azerbaijan seeks the international bodies do, Azerbaijan Ambassador Alizadeh said that Azerbaijan wants the world tribunal bodies bring to justice those who have behind Khojaly Genocide because by punishing the criminals, no country or political will dare to commit such horrible genocide.

Alizada further said that Azerbaijan has no problem with Armenian people and in case the dispute over the borders of Azerbaijan and Armenia is settled, people of both countries can leave in peace and tranquility.

He reiterated that Azerbaijan has never had any problem with Armenian people and the problems have been only with the Armenian politicians and Baku has always asked for punishment of those who were behind the Khojaly Genocide.

He went on to say that during almost 30 years of occupation of Karabakh, Armenians have almost destroyed all mosques and cultural centers and they have kept only two mosques where they keep their animals to insult Azeris.

 

H noted that Azerbaijan President during to his visit to the liberate area ordered the reconstruction of the destroyed areas.

Alizadeh also hailed Iran and Iran’s Supreme Leader for his support from Azerbaijan regarding Karabakh.
