TEHRAN (Iran News) – Once the development of the new phases of the South Pars (SP) Gas Field in southern Iran are completed, the country will outpace Qatar in gas extraction from the joint field by 120 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d).
This was announced by Managing Director of the South Pars Gas Company (SPGC) Hadi Hashemzadeh Farhang in an exclusive interview with IRNA on Tuesday.
He said Iran finally won the “breathtaking marathon” over gas extraction from the shared field.
At present, 23 years after the beginning of its development, the giant gas filed, having 12 refineries, has turned into the world’s biggest gas refinery complex, Hashemzadeh Farhang added.
Following the inauguration of the SP phases 2 and 3 in 2001, the field produced some 56 mcm/d of gas, he noted, saying the figure currently stands at 700 mcm/d.
The SPGC CEO said what adds to the value of Iran’s achievement in overtaking Qatar is that only one-third of the field is located within the Iranian territory; while the remaining two-thirds are in Qatar’s territorial waters.
