Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi said on Friday that 20% of daily deaths in the country is due to the novel coronavirus.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi said on Friday that 20% of daily deaths in the country are due to the novel coronavirus.

He made the remarks at a meeting of the Central Headquarters for Fighting the Coronavirus in North Khorasan Province, IRNA reported.
Harirchi added that one of the main policies of the country’s National Headquarters for Managing and Fighting the Coronavirus is to reduce the number of new infections until the discovery of a vaccine for the disease.
Iran’s Health Ministry on Friday put the total number of coronavirus cases in the country at 286,523.
The ministry’s spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said 2,489 people tested positive for the coronavirus from Thursday to Friday.
Of the newly detected cases, 1,504 patients have been admitted to the hospital, she added.
Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 3,653 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.
The deputy in Iran also confirmed 215 more daily deaths from the coronavirus, bringing the total death toll to 15,289.
Lari also said so far 249,212 patients have recovered from the viral infection.
Iran has been battling a resurgence of the virus, with official figures showing a rise in both new infections and deaths since a two-month low in May.
Iran reported its first cases in the holy city of Qom in February.
The rising toll has prompted authorities to make masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces and to allow the hardest-hit provinces to reimpose restrictive measures, with Tehran being included.
