Oman Eager to Boost Its Imports From Iran

TEHRAN – Director General of Ports and Maritime Organization for Agreements and Market Development said Oman is interested in importing from Iran instead of Lebanon and Syria.
Referring to agreements in maritime and shipping transportation, Mohammad Ali Asl Saeedipour said reducing ports and customs tariffs to increase trade exchange volume is on the agenda.
He referred to promoting shipping companies’ cooperation on transporting goods between Iran, Oman and third countries, facilitating cargo and passenger ships movements in ports, agreements on technical cooperation including rescue, protecting the maritime environment, training courses, maritime security, exchanging information and experiences as main issues mentioned in the agreement.
He noted that one of the main objectives is to transfer the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) products and to become a transit corridor in the region.
Oman has welcomed importing Iranian products like fruit, meat, saffron, and pistachio.
Referring to sea as one of the suitable paths for exchanging goods between Iran and Oman, he said decisions have been made to facilitate the customs procedure and tariffs, decreasing bureaucracy procedure and issues related to standardization.
Stressing the cultural commonalities between Iran and Oman, he said launching the passenger shipping line between Iran and Oman depends on Passengers’ demand.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Saeedipour vowed increasing ports and maritime activities between Hormuzgan and Masandan.
He also revealed the signing and sealing of a cooperation agreement between Iran and Oman in the field of cargo and passenger maritime transport with low tariff rates.
This cooperation agreement was inked by Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami and Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy Omani Minister of Commerce and Industry on Sat.
This bilateral cooperation agreement between Iran and Oman in shipping and maritime field will be notified as a law after being approved by the Parliament, he added.
The director general pointed to the main subjects of trade shipping and maritime transport agreement inked between Iran and Oman as follows: developing maritime cooperation between the two countries, promoting cooperation of shipping companies in the field of transport of goods between Iran and Oman and third-party countries, facilitating entry and exit of cargo and passenger ships in ports and also ports of third-party countries, protecting the marine environment, maritime-related trainings and also exchanging information and experiences, etc.
Taking advantage of transit capacities and turning into the transit corridor in the region is one of the strategic objectives of the country, he stressed.
Oman is of the countries that has always supported Iran’s interests in the international arena and has acted as a mediator, he said, adding, “the two countries have established amicable ties with each other which dates back to many years ago.”
