Armenia Wants to Tighten Economic Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Iran News)- Armenia’s Ambassador to Iran Artashes Toumanian in a meeting with Iranian Minister of Labor, Cooperatives and Social Welfare Mohammad Shariatmadari voiced Armenia willingness to broaden economic and trade ties with Iran.

“My country, Armenia intends to develop economic ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Toumanian said during the meeting in Tehran on Friday.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged their views on signing and sealing a mutual cooperation deal in the future and also developing economic relations at different levels.

Shariatmadari, for his part, said that the two countries of Iran and Armenia have established age-old and longstanding relations with each other which dates back to many years ago.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked between the two countries in 2011 in the field of labor and social welfare, based on which, it was agreed to set up a joint cooperation committee, he said, adding, “The draft of this cooperation document has previously been submitted to Armenian side and it is hoped that this document will be inked in the course of upcoming visit of Armenian labor minister to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Moreover, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) can help develop economic cooperation between Iran and Armenia in the arena of economic activities as well, Shariatmadari added.

In a relevant development in October, Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami and Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan in a meeting in Yerevan discussed mutual cooperation in the field of rail and road transportation.

During the meeting in the Armenian capital, the two sides agreed to establish a modeling committee to facilitate connecting rail and road infrastructures.

Eslami stressed the need for mutual transit cooperation in Silk Road, Persian Gulf-Black Sea Corridor and North-South Corridor.

Eslami who is currently visiting Armenia is to attend the International Conference on Eurasia Transit Capacities also met with the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia Suren Papikyan on Monday.

They discussed transportation and transit cooperation and development of infrastructure during the meeting.

The two ministers also called for immediate finalization of the Persian Gulf-Black Sea Agreement.

Eurasia Transit Conference attended by representatives from Eurasia Economic Union member-states and regional countries opened in Yerevan on Monday.
