TEHRAN (Iran News) – The inauguration of a railroad connecting Mianeh to Bostan Abad and presidential trip to Azarbaijan were postponed due to the demise of President Hasssan Rouhani’s sister, Sediqeh Fereydoun, on Sunday, said a deputy roads and urban development minister.

Presidential trip to Azarbaijan Province was supposed to start today to inaugurate the railroad in a ceremony.

Kheirollah Khademi told IRNA on Sunday that Rouhani postponed his trip to East Azarbaijan Province due to the tragic event.

He added the railroad would probably be inaugurated on Wednesday.

Earlier, Khademi noted that the railroad will help connect East Azarbaijan Province to the national rail network through a short cut.

He said the construction of the railroad was aimed at providing people in the northwestern parts of the country with fast and easy access to Tehran as it helps reduce the length of the rail route between the two locations by close to 114 kilometers (almost five hours thirty minutes).

Commenting on the importance of the railroad for international transit, Khademi noted that three of the five main corridors connecting East Asia to Europe pass through Iran.

“Mianeh-Bostan Abad railway is one of the important parts of these corridors that stretch from northeastern and southeastern borders of the country to Western Asia and Europe.”

The route is among the main arteries of the national rail network in northwestern Iran and along the country’s eastern-western transit corridor, he said.

With a length of 132 kilometers, Mianeh-Bostan Abad railway is part of the railroad connecting the provincial capital of Tabriz to Mianeh.
