Fourth Time Unlucky for Majlis Lawmakers
TEHRAN – Majlis lawmakers yesterday made some controversial decisions which can limit lawmakers from running in the upcoming election.

According to the reports, lawmakers yesterday approved a law which limist lawmakers to emroll for the fourth consecutive term. Accordingly, a lawmaker can enter Majlis for three consecutive term and he would be banned from the fourth term. If the Guardian Council endorses it, some current lawmakers will not be able to run for the next year’s Majlis election. Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani will be one of the top lawmakers who will miss the next election in case the law is endorsed by the Guardian Council.

Some lawmakers opposed the bill and claimed it is against the Constitutions and there is no wise reasoning before such a decision.

They claimed that this is the people who elect and Majlis should let them elect by themselves rather than narrowing their choices.

But some lawmakers had different views and believed that the law will help young generation and lawmakers enter Majlis which will boost its dynamism.

Meanwhile Majlis approved a law which restricts candidacy and will make the parliament election provincial. According to the law, those who are eligible to run for Majlis election should be candidates of any political party. It seems Majlis wants to stop individualism in the elections and it wants to boost the role of the political parties.

Those who are keen to be candidates should enroll via a legal and official party. For years , politicians had encouraged the legislative branch to change the election law and to set new laws for improving the role of the parties in the election. If the law is endorsed by the Guardian Council, there will be no individual candidate in the upcoming Majlis election.
