Turkey expects the U.S. to extend its sanctions waiver on importing Iranian oil, Bloomberg reported on Thursday quoting Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan.
“We expect an extension of Turkey’s exemption” from sanctions, Pekcan said in an interview with NTV in Ankara. She was referring to the temporary waiver that allowed Turkey to continue buying Iranian oil for six months.
The U.S. launched new sanctions on Iran’s petroleum sector on November 4, but it has granted exemptions to eight countries allowing them to temporarily continue buying Iranian oil.
As the Hindu Business Line reported on Wednesday, senior officials in the Indian government said India is likely to continue purchasing oil from Iran in 2019 and New Delhi is expecting a positive result when the U.S. reviews the waiver.
Sanjiv Singh, the chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, believes that Iranian crude in global market is extremely important for sustaining a balance in oil trade.
Meanwhile on December 21, Reuters reported that the United States has reached an agreement in principle with Iraq to extend for 90 days an exemption to sanctions against Iran, allowing Baghdad to keep importing Iranian gas that is critical for Iraqi power generation.
