An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale hit an area in Iran’s southern province of Fars late on Thursday but there have been no casualties, a provincial official said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, the deputy head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) of Fars Province, Qodratollah Jamali, said the quake that jolted the province at 10:45 p.m. on Thursday has had no damage to life or property, according to the examination of the IRCS teams.

The epicenter was determined to be at 27.04 degrees north latitude and 53.90 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 19 km.

The closest cities in the quake-hit area are Eshkanan, 3 km away from the epicenter, and Ahel, 30 km away.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive.

In November 2017, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Kermanshah Province, killing more than 600 and injuring more than 9,000.

The deadliest quake in Iran’s modern history happened in June 1990. It destroyed the northern cities of Rudbar, Manjil, and Lushan, along with hundreds of villages, killing an estimated 37,000 people.

Bam in the country’s southeastern province of Kerman witnessed a strong quake in December 2003 which killed 31,000 people.
