TEHRAN – Iran’s Esteghlal German coach Winfried Schaefer is a shock candidate to become coach of Iraq, according to a report posted on alkass.net.
The 68-year-old coach took charge of Esteghlal in early October 2017 on a two-year contract but the Qatari site has reported that he has been linked with a move to Iraq national football team.
Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson met with officials from the Iraqi FA in Istanbul last week but turned down the opportunity to manage the team.
Now, the Iraqi officials are eying to sign a contract with Schaefer, report says.
Esteghlal club released a statement on Saturday saying Schaefer is under contract with them and is going nowhere.
Under leadership of Schaefer, Esteghlal has advanced to the 2018 AFC Champions League semi-final and will meet Al Sadd of Qatar on August 27.
