Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said given the collapse of Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL) in Iraq and Syria, efforts should be made to prevent Africa from turning into a base for extremist groups.
“Given the defeat of Daesh in Iraq and Syria, we (should have) cooperation and synergy to not let Africa turn into a base for extremist groups,” he said in a meeting with Tunisia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sabri Bachtobji.
The meeting was held on Thursday during Jahangiri’s short visit to the North African country en route to Bolivia to attend the fourth summit meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
On November 19, Daesh terrorists were flushed out of their last stronghold in Syria’s Albu Kamal. The city’s liberation marked an end to the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate it had declared in 2014.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian first vice president called for using all capacities to boost the bilateral ties between Iran and Tunisia.
The Tunisian deputy foreign minister, for his part, called for elevation of all-out ties between Tehran and Tunis and urged that the two countries’ joint economic commission hold a meeting as soon as possible.
