TEHRAN – Iran’s CP football team suffered a loss in the face of Ukrainian rivals to land in the second place at 2017 IFCPF CP Football World Championships in Argentina.

The final showdown saw Iranian and Ukrainian CP footballers competing over the gold medal. At the end of a breath-taking debut, Ukraine got the better of the Persian side with only one goal.

As such, Iranian athletes stood behind title-winner Ukraine and occupied the second position in the international sportive event.

Previously in the group stage of the event, Iran’s CP football outfit had overcome Argentina and Portugal but conceded a defeat against Russian rivals.

In the second stage, Iranians succeeded in quelling Brazil and later breezed past English contestant on road to the finals.

The 2017 IFCPF CP Football World Championships was the world championship for men’s national 7-a-side association football teams. IFCPF stands for International Federation of Cerebral Palsy Football. Athletes compete with a physical disability. The Championship took place in the Argentina from 4 to 24 September 2017.

Football CP Football is played with modified FIFA rules. Among the modifications there are seven players, no offside, a smaller playing field, and permission for one-handed throw-ins. Matches consisted of two thirty-minute halves, with a fifteen-minute half-time break. The Championships are a qualifying event for the 2019 IFCPF CP Football World Championships.
