Written and directed by Iranian-Armenian Anahid Abad, ‘Yeva’ is the story of a young woman who is forced to flee Yerevan with her daughter Nareh. She would have to stand trial there because she allegedly killed her husband. Uncle Ruben and the remote village in Nagorno-Karabakh are her last chance to go into hiding. But the villagers recognize her from the days of war when she had cared for the wounded as a doctor at the front.

The film has received the Audience Choice Award at the 12th annual Pomegranate Film Festival (POM) in Canada.

‘Yeva’ has recently received three nominations (best feature, best script and best director award) at the 21st Arpa International Film Festival (AIFF) in the United States.

The 27th International Film Festival in Varna is scheduled for 23 Aug. – 1 Sep. 2019 in Bulgaria. The festival title is “Love is folly”. The IFF “Love is folly” is one of the most important art events not only for fashionable Varna but also for the life of the European cinema industry.

For over 26 years, the doyen of international film festivals with a Bulgarian address, led by the ambition to broadcast the latest productions in the world of the seventh art, annually presents more than 90 films from both the Bulgarian and world film list.

“Yeva” directed by Nahid Abad received the Armenian National Film Academy Award for Best Film.

In addition, the film brought the film’s star Shant Hovhannisyan the Sos Sargsyan Award for Best Actor.

Directed by Abolfazl Saffari, “Sunset Truck” won the Hrant Matevosyan Award for Best Script.

Both films were screened in Armenian Panorama, a non-official section of the festival that took place in the Armenian capital from July 8 to 15.

Co-written by Saffari and Sajjad Afsharian, “Sunset Truck” is about an Iranian family that have been running a camp for desert lovers for many years. Business is gradually drying when Arash, the youngest son, comes up with a novel idea. Through his skillful use of Facebook, he attracts new visitors to the camp with the promise of providing the most beautiful sunsets anywhere in the world. Business takes off again. However, other problems quickly arise.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi presided over the jury of the official competition this year. He also received Parajanov’s Thaler, an honorary award for his outstanding artistic contribution to the world cinema.

“Volcano”, a Ukraine-Germany co-production directed by Roman Bondarchuk, won the Golden Apricot for Best Film in the official competition.

Germinal Roaux from Switzerland received the Silver Apricot for Best Director for his film “Fortuna”.

TEHRAN – Iranian-Armenian filmmaker Anahid Abad, whose latest drama “Yeva” has been selected to represent Armenia at the Oscars, has said that she has her roots in the cultures of both countries.

She made the remarks in an interview with the Persian service of ISNA on Monday after the co-production by Iran and Armenia was submitted to the 90th Academy Awards in the best foreign-language film category.

“I’m really happy that this film has been chosen for the Oscars, because it is a joint production of Iran and Armenia,” Abad said and added, “Due to my dual nationality, I have my roots in the cultures of both Iran and Armenia and I really love both of them.”

She said that she has learned cinema in working with some prominent Iranian filmmakers as an assistant director, but “Yeva” as her directorial debut, which has been made in Armenia, directly represents the history and culture of the country.

“Yeva” has been co-produced by Iran’s Farabi Cinema Foundation and the National Cinema Center of Armenia.

The film tells the story of Yeva, a young woman who escapes her influential in-laws with her daughter Nareh after her husband’s tragic death, and takes refuge in one of the villages of Karabakh, Armenia.

The film is currently on screen in several Armenian cities.
