The German coach has a great experience in general and in the Persian Gulf region in particular, where he has previously trained Al Shabab, Al Ahli and won the title of the league and also trained Al Ain Club and won the title of Etisalat Cup.

At the international level, the coach’s many achievements include winning the African Nations Cup with Cameroon, training Thailand and qualifying for the World Cup with many other achievements,

The Emirati football team will travel to Spain next week to hold a training camp.

Schafer was dismissed as Iran’s Esteghlal coach in late April.

Farhad Majidi appointed Esteghlal coach

Majidi, 42, will lead the Iranian Blues in the remaining third matches in Iran Professional League (IPL) and two matches in the 2019 AFC Champions League group stage against Qatar’s Al Duhail and Al Ain of the UAE.

Majidi started his coaching career as assistant in Esteghlal in early January.

He replaced German coach Winfried Schaefer in Esteghlal.

Esteghlal have little chance of winning the IPL title after suffering a defeat against Padideh in Mashhad Saturday night, which left them in the third place, six points behind leaders Persepolis.

The Tehran based football team also have a difficult task to book a place in the ACL knock out stage, as they sit bottom of the table of Group C with just four points from four matches.

Al Hilal have nine points at the top while Al Duhail sit second with seven points.

Esteghlal motivated to beat Al Hilal: Winfried Schaefer

The Iranian Blues will face Al Hilal in Doha in Group C of the AFC Champions League.

Esteghlal sit bottom of the group with one point, while Al Hilal lead the table with six points.

“It’s an important match for both teams. Al Hilal are among the best teams in Asia and we have a difficult task against them. However, my players are motivated to meet Al Hilal but we need concentration for victory,” the German coach said.

“Al Hilal are leaders and it shows how strong they are but we can be success with self-confidence and discipline,” Schaefer added.

Winfried Schafer: Contract Extension Talks ‘Not Going in Positive Way’

Iran’s Esteghlal football team’s head coach Winfried Schafer says he has not been offered new contract yet.

On 2 October 2017, Schafer signed his official contract with Esteghlal until the end of the season.

Schafer has yet to sign a new contract.

“It’s really out of my hands. My agents have offers from the other clubs but I am not thinking about that at the moment. I just think about the match against Al Ain and Al Rayyan respectively. If they don’t want me I will leave the club but I am not done in Esteghlal. I love my players including Omid Ebrahimi, Farshid Bagheri, Omid Nourafkan and Majid Hosseini and I think they are great,” Schafer said in an exclusive interview with the Tasnim News Agency.

Asked if he considers extending his contract, Schafer said, “We have a lot of work to do. For example, we had not internet access to analyze Al Ain and were forced to go to coffee shop, a 15-minute walk away, and my question is why we should not have internet access? It doesn’t matter if Esteghlal is a small club but if we are a big club we have to solve these kinds of problems

Schafer took revenge on Persepolis in Tehran derby, beating the team 1-0 on Thursday. Esteghlal had lost to Persepolis in the first half of the Iran Professional League with the same result.

“I was surprised after returning to my apartment because my neighbors welcomed me with flowers due to winning the derby. I didn’t know what was happening to me in Iran but I am very happy at the moment. The Iranian people are very kind and they are ready to give their hearts.”

“Iran is a safe country. I told Salisu Abdullahi “Alhaji” Gero the country is safe and also told this to Yves Ekwalla Herman. I told them I am happy in Iran, that’s why I am here. I think the Western media are deceptive about Iran. Mame Baba Thiam is also happy to be in Iran like me. As I’ve already said the Iranian people are very nice,” he underlined.

When asked “what would you say to Iran President if you meet him?”, he said, “It’s difficult to say something but I will certainly tell him your country is very beautiful. I will also say you have a very kind people and the President will also answer me ‘Yes Mr. coach, I know myself’.”

Winfried Schäfer Appointed Esteghlal Coach

TEHRAN – Winfried Schäfer has been named as new head coach of Esteghlal football team on Monday.

The 67-year-old coach has penned a one year contract, with the option of extension.

The former Cameroon and Thailand head coach replaced Alireza Mansourian in the Iranian popular football team.

Schäfer has also worked at VfB Stuttgart, FK Baku, Karlsruher SC and Jamaica national football team.

Former Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster and ex-Al Hilal coach Zlatko Dalic were also candidates to take charge of Esteghlal.

Esteghlal sits 11th in Iran Professional League table. The Blues have bagged just eight points from eight matches.
