]]> TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran lost to Romania 15-4 in the Men’s Preliminary Round – Group A of the 2023 Men’s Water Polo World Cup, Division 2 on Friday.

Team Melli are in Group B along with Romania, Kazakhstan and New Zealand.

Group A consists of China, Germany, Malta and South Africa.

The Persians are scheduled to play New Zealand and Kazakhstan on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The tournament is being held in Berlin, Germany from May 5 to 7.

]]> TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran overpowered Thailand 15-3 at the 2022 Asian Water Polo Championship on Friday.

Iran had previously defeated India 19-4, South Korea 17-8 and Kazakhstan 11-10 in Pool A and advanced to the next stage as group winners.

Team Melli, headed by Aleksandar Ciric, will play Group B’s fourth team on Saturday.

The competition is being held in Samut Prakan, Thailand from Nov. 7 to 13.

The Asian Water Polo Championship serves as qualification for the 2023 World Water Polo Championship to be held in Fukuoka, Japan.

The top two teams as well as hosts Japan will take part in the world championship.

According To Iran News, Iran lost to Italy 16-4 at Group C of the 20th FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships on Saturday.

Iran beat Kuwait 15-7 at the Al-Nasar Sport Club in Kuwait City on Thursday and suffered a 27-4 loss against USA on Friday.

Iran has been scheduled to meet Montenegro on Monday.

The groups are composed as follows:

GROUP A: Serbia, Japan, South Africa, Croatia, China

GROUP B: Russia, Canada, Spain, Hungary, Egypt

GROUP C: Montenegro, Kuwait, USA, Italy, Iran

GROUP D: Brazil, Uzbekistan, Greece, Australia, New Zealand

In the last edition of the championships, held in 2017 in Belgrade (SRB), the medalists were Greece (gold), Croatia (silver) and Serbia (bronze).

The Iranian team, headed by Aleksandar Ciric, has been invited to South Korea after glittering performance in the 2018 Asian Games.

Iran won its first medal since the 1974 Asian Games after defeating China 16-15 on penalty shootout (8-8 in the regular time) in the 2018 Asian Games bronze medal match.

Team Melli will participate in the training camp as part of preparation for the 18th FINA World Aquatics Championships to be held in Gwangju, South Korea.

]]>  Three-time Olympic medal winner Aleksandar Ciric has shown interest in continuing to work with Iran national water polo team as a coach.

Under guidance of the 40-year-old coach, Iran national water polo team claimed a medal after 44 years.

Team Melli defeated China 16-15 on penalty shootout (8-8 in the regular time) at the GBK – Aquatic Center in Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday to win a bronze medal.

“I want to continue my work as Iran coach. First, I need to rest after months of hard work. Then I will talk to the Iran Swimming Federation president Mohsen Rezvani,” Ciric said.

Ciric is a Serbian water polo player who played for two Olympic bronze medal squads, one for FR Yugoslavia at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, the other for Serbia at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and one Olympic silver medal squad for Serbia and Montenegro at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

In Group A, the Iranian team beat the host 12-8.

Aleksandar Ciric’s men, who had defeated Uruguay 15-8 and Tunisia 10-8 in the first two matches, advanced to the next stage as the first team.

Group B consists of Peru, Singapore, Austria and Saudi Arabia.

The competition has welcomed eight promising teams for a six-day tournament from Oct. 17 to 22 in Gzira, Malta.

The last edition back in 2015 in Tehran (IRI) was won by the host country team, while Uruguay took silver and Austria bronze.

Uzbekistan won the 2013 edition of the Development Trophy in Kuwait City, Egypt and Saudi Arabia came second and third respectively.
