TEHRAN (Iran News) – China’s foreign minister decried international “bullying practices” while meeting with his Iranian counterpart Tuesday, in the country’s latest criticism of US foreign policy.

Wang Yi reaffirmed the strength of bilateral relations in opening remarks at the beginning of talks with Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The Iranian minister’s visit follows a trip to close ally Russia and comes just after the first-ever drills among the navies of the three countries in the northern part of the Indian Ocean.

“We need to stand together against unilateralism and bullying practices,” Wang said.

China was a signatory to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and has strongly criticized the US for abandoning it in favor of a campaign of heightened diplomatic and economic pressure.

He said China will firmly safeguard international fairness and justice and promote the political solution to the Iran nuclear issue.

“The Chinese side supports all constructive efforts that help ease the current tension and uphold the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” Wang said.

He said the United States has withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal and taken a maximum pressure tactic against Iran, which was to blame for the current tension of the Iran nuclear issue.

China will firmly defend international fairness and justice, oppose unilateralism and bullying, and work to promote a political and diplomatic settlement of the Iran nuclear issue, Wang said.

Without directly mentioning the US, Wang said China and Iran would stand up for their national interests as well as “uphold multilateralism and norms governing international relations.”

Zarif responded that the two countries were united in, “common effort to fight unilateralism and to promote multilateralism” in 2020.

Speaking highly of the important role China has played in safeguarding the Iran nuclear deal, Zarif said the Iranian side is willing to work with the Chinese side to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to a new level.

“We need to keep up regular bilateral consultations on a variety of issues and this trip serves that purpose,” he added.

Zarif further hailed China for supporting Iran’s stance on the international stage.

The 2015 deal between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program. The US withdrew from the accord in 2018 and imposed crippling economic sanctions that block Iran from selling crude oil abroad.

In response to the US sanctions, Iran has pressured the European signatories to find a way to limit the impact on the Iranian economy. Tehran has slowly decreased its compliance with the terms of the deal a year after the US withdrawal.

Iran’s moves have been condemned by Western governments as unwelcome and escalating tensions in the region, while Russia and China have repeatedly blamed the US.

The four-day naval exercise, launched from the southeastern port city of Chabahar in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, underscores the informal alliance among China, Iran, and Russia in the face of President Donald Trump’s moves to withdraw the US from international agreements.

AP, Xinhua and Press TV contributed to this story.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met and held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday on bilateral ties, JCPOA, and regional and international developments, according to the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“Important changes are taking place on the Iranian nuclear issue; the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is facing serious challenges,” said Wang Yi, adding, “The fact that the United States unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA, abandoned its international obligations, and putting extreme pressure on Iran is the root cause of the tense situation on Iranian nuclear issue at present.”

“The JCPOA was endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and was an important outcome of multilateral diplomacy. To safeguard the authority and effectiveness of the JCPOA is to safeguard multilateralism and international law, and to safeguard the basic norms of international relations,” Chinese FM stressed.

He went on to say, “China supports all constructive efforts that help ease the tension and safeguard the JCPOA. It is hoped that the JCPOA participants should adhere to the right direction, resist external pressure, manage existing differences through negotiation and dialogue, and continue to maintain and implement the JCPOA.”

“China will firmly defend international fairness and justice and oppose any unilateralism and bullying. We will strive to promote a political and diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue,” he noted.

Welcoming Zarif’s presence in Beijing, Wang Yi said, “Today is the last day of 2019. I welcome you to visit China for the fourth time this year. I am willing to review China-Iran relations with you, implement the consensus of the heads of state of the two countries, consolidate political mutual trust, deepen pragmatic cooperation, promote China-Iran Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for greater development, and enter the New Year full of expectations together.”

Zarif spoke positively and thanked China for its important efforts to safeguard the JCPOA. He gave a briefing on Iran’s consultations with Russia and Europe on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Zarif said that Iran is willing to maintain close communications with China, adhere to multilateralism, oppose unilateralism, earnestly safeguard the JCPOA, as well as defend Iran’s legitimate rights and interests.

“I have had a broad and constructive dialogue with my good friend, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi,” Zarif tweeted in the Chinese language late Monday.

“We have common views on bilateral, regional and international affairs,” the top diplomat wrote, adding that “I proposed a 25-year roadmap to consolidate the comprehensive strategic partnership between Iran and China and make a positive contribution to the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative.”

Zarif landed in Beijing late Sunday at the first leg of his three-nation Asian tour and met with his Chinese counterpart on Monday.

At the meeting, the two diplomats discussed bilateral relations, the latest developments in the implementation of the Iran-France Presidents’ initiative to salvage Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), the roadmap for the two countries’ relations in the next 25 years, the security of the Persian Gulf region and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and the US’ illegal and unilateral sanctions against independent states.

The Chinese minister underlined that his country supports any move that would reduce tensions and increase stability and security in the region, as well as Iran’s legitimate rights and economic benefits incorporated in the JCPOA.

Zarif, for his part, emphasized the all-out development of the strategic and long-standing relations between the two nations of Iran and China and condemned the US economic pressure and sanctions against China, as well as the intervention of that country and some other Western countries in China’s internal affairs. He also expressed the Islamic Republic’s support for One-China policy.

Zarif is scheduled to visit Japan and Malaysia next to hold high-level talks with the senior officials of the East Asian countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that Beijing values its relations with Iran and is willing to continue to advance mutually beneficial cooperation according to the development of the situation.

According to Xinhua, in a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Wang said that the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, is an important achievement of multilateralism in line with the common interest of the international community.

Adhering to the nuclear deal also conforms to the fundamental interests of Iran, he said.

“We have openly indicated that we oppose the wrong practices of unilateral sanctions and ‘long-arm jurisdiction’ in international relations,” he noted.

For his part, Zarif said that Iran is willing to strengthen coordination with the related parties, including China, and properly tackle the new situation on the nuclear issue.

U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the nuclear deal on May 8 and ordered restoration of sanctions against Iran.

The first batch of sanctions was snapped back on Monday, August 6. The second batch will be restored on November 4.

CNBC reported on August 8 that China condemned the measures reinstated against Tehran and urged oil and gas firms to reject calls for them to completely cut off from Iranian crude.

“China’s commercial cooperation with Iran is open and transparent, reasonable, fair and lawful, not violating any United Nations Security Council resolutions,” China’s Foreign Ministry said.
