TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Vatican said it has talked to US officials regarding Washington’s sanctions against Iran amid the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in the country.

Recently, senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Mostafa Mohaqqeq Damad penned a letter to Pope Francis in Vatican and asked him to help lift the cruel US sanctions against Iran amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vatican responded in a letter to the Iranian scholar and said that the Vatican’s secretary of state Cardinal Pietro Parolin had contacted US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft and relayed to the diplomat Iran’s concern, demanding Washington to pay attention to the issue.

Ayatollah Mohaqqeq Damad, who is a senior member of the Academy of Sciences of Iran, in his letter, said, “The sanctions have greatly multiplied the sufferings and afflictions of the oppressed Iranian Muslim people and have forced them to face countless problems that have had a profound and negative impact on their life, on their peace and spiritual tranquility and moreover, have deprived them of the most basic and inalienable human rights”.

The Vatican further expressed sympathy with people in Iran and all other countries gripped by the coronavirus, stating that this ordeal brings to light the fact that people are members of the same human community and should set aside enmity and hate.

In the letter, the Vatican said Pope Francis has urged all humans to live in peace and harmony on the planet earth.

A high-profile victim of a disgraced pedophile priest said Saturday he was glad to finally be able to tell his story as the Vatican’s top abuse investigator began a probe into an alleged cover-up in Chile.

Pope Francis has come under fire for defending a bishop accused of orchestrating the cover-up.

“For the first time I feel they are listening to us,” Juan Carlos Cruz, a victim of priest Fernando Karadima, told reporters in New York after a meeting that lasted about an hour and a half with Archbishop Charles Scicluna in a Manhattan church.

He added: “It was a long, emotionally difficult meeting, but I am very happy to have been able to speak with Mr. Scicluna, they behaved incredibly well.”

Karadima was accused of abusing children in 2010, and convicted by the Vatican to a life of penitence.

Scicluna, who prosecuted cases involving predator priests for the Vatican’s doctrinal body from 2002 to 2012, is set to visit Chile from Monday as part of his investigation into Bishop Juan Barros, who is accused of covering up and even witnessing Karadima’s abuse which took place during the 1980s and 1990s.

Controversy over the 61-year-old Barros marred Pope Francis’ trip to Chile last month, when he hugged and defended the bishop.

In 2015, Francis appointed Barros the head of the diocese of Osorno in southern Chile despite the accusations against him.

“The day they bring me proof against Bishop Barros, then I will speak,” the pope said during his Chile visit.

He later apologized to sexual abuse victims, acknowledging the word “proof” had hurt many people.

Following his statement, Cruz said that he gave Scicluna documents to support his accusations against Barros, and discussed other abuses involving priests in the South American country.

Nearly 80 Catholic clergymen stand accused of sexually abusing children in Chile, according to the US NGO BishopAccountability, which tracks cases.

“As I told him my story and the stories of others, his eyes welled up. He was not acting, his compassion and empathy were evident,” Cruz said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to the long-standing, respectful and reciprocal relations between Tehran and the Holy See (Vatican City) and emphasized the need for dialogue and effective cooperation between religions and civilizations.

Zarif made the remark on Wednesday, in a meeting with Vatican City’s Secretary for Relations with States Paul Richard Gallagher, who is in Tehran to hold talks with Iranian officials.

He underlined that Iran respects the character and positions of the Pope.

Talking about the regions critical conditions, the Iranian foreign minister underlined the need for peaceful solutions to overcome these crises, stressing that the world’s problem today is extremism, which is not limited to a special region.

Zarif also referred to the issue of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and called on all countries to cooperate and join hands to stop the massacre and mass expulsion of Muslims in the country. He also appreciated Vatican Citys efforts in this regard.

Speaking about the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, the Iranian FM added that after the Cuban crisis the world has forgotten the danger of using these weapons, but again we are witnessing that this great danger is posing threats to the international community.

In turn, Gallagher discussed the two sides shared views on regional developments and dialogue and cooperation to end regional crises, the refugee crisis, and extremism.

He said Vatican City has supported the peaceful use of nuclear energy and Iran’s nuclear deal, and it still throws its weight behind it.

“Encouraging the culture of peace and the peaceful coexistence of religions in the Middle East should be pursued with earnestness and Vatican City has always supported this coexistence between religions,” he added.

Speaking on the Myanmar Muslims, Gallagher referred to Vatican City’s efforts to resolve the crisis, saying, “we will continue our efforts in this regard.”

The foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran and his counterpart from the Holy See also exchanged views on various political, social and inter-regional issues, expressing satisfaction with the process of dialogue between the two sides.
