U.S. must show it genuinely seeks negotiations: President Pezeshkian

TEHRAN (Iran News) President Masoud Pezeshkian has reiterated Iran’s commitment to dialogue but said the United States must also demonstrate a genuine intent for negotiations.

In remarks on Monday, the president said that while Iran believes in negotiations, it will not engage in talks “at any cost.”

“We are not seeking war, tensions, or nuclear weapons; we are seeking negotiations. However, the Americans must also prove that they are genuinely pursuing negotiations,” he said.

The president noted that Iran’s commitment to not using its nuclear capabilities for “non-peaceful” purposes is not merely a political declaration but is rooted in a fatwa (religious decree) issued by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Iran’s nuclear doctrine is based on Ayatollah Khamenei’s fatwa, which prohibits the production, possession, and stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

U.S. President Donald Trump has called for direct negotiations with Iran to make a new deal to replace the one he unilaterally abandoned during his first term. However he has also threatened to bomb Iran if an agreement is not reached.

Tehran has ruled out direct talks with Washington under threats and pressure but has left the door open for indirect negotiations.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US President Donald Trump declined to commit to providing a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the election, prompting a backlash on social media from critics who said it raised questions about his willingness to relinquish power.

“Well, we’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump said on Wednesday when asked directly whether he would commit to a peaceful transition, assuming he lost the election, the USA Today reported.

“You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots and the ballots are a disaster,” Trump told reporters, referring to state where ballots are mailed automatically to registered voters. “Get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very a peaceful – there won’t be a transfer, frankly, there’ll be a continuation.”

Democratic candidate Joe Biden was asked about Trump’s comments Wednesday night.

“What country are we in? I’m being facetious,” Biden said, adding, “Look, he says the most irrational things. I don’t know what to say.”

In the past Trump has declined to say whether he would accept voters’ results, suggesting he wants to leave his options open to contest those results.

Trump has also repeatedly joked at rallies that he would seek more than two terms, a line he uses to show how he “triggers” outrage about his Democratic critics.

Trump’s latest remarks drew a firestorm of criticism on Twitter. The peaceful transfer of power between US presidential administration is a hallmark of the country’s stability.

“People who are very chill about the president not committing to the peaceful transfer of power unless they ‘get rid of the ballots’ are too chill for me,” tweeted Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii. “This seems an awfully serious thing to be dismissive about. At the very least it’s a good reason to oppose him vigorously.”

GOP Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah also responded on Twitter.

“Fundamental to democracy is the peaceful transition of power; without that, there is Belarus,” Romney tweeted. “Any suggestion that a president might not respect this Constitutional guarantee is both unthinkable and unacceptable.”

Joe Lockhart, a former spokesman to President Bill Clinton, suggested that every Democratic member of Congress send a letter to the president “demanding he commit to the peaceful transition of power in writing. If he won’t, impeachment is a viable option.”

Trump said in an interview with the Washington Examiner that he was intrigued by Biden’s improved performance during the Democratic primary.

“We’re going to call for a drug test,“ Trump said, expressing surprise at the bearing of former vice president during the last presidential debate against Vermont senator Bernie Sanders in March.

The president has no concrete evidence to support his claims, but, he said, “All I can tell you is that I’m pretty good at this stuff.

“I watched him in the debates with all of the different people,“ Trump said, referring to the other Democratic presidential hopefuls, AFP reported.

Biden was “close to incompetent, if not incompetent, and against Bernie, he was normal, “Trump continued. “I say, ‘How does that happen?’”

Trump made similar remarks in the fall of 2016, at the peak of the presidential race, positing that then-opponent Hillary Clinton had taken drugs.

“I think we should take a drug test prior to the debate,“ he said during a rally in New Hampshire.

“I don’t know what’s going on with her. But at the beginning of her last debate — she was all pumped up at the beginning, and at the end it was like, ‘Oh, take me down.’ She could barely reach her car, “he added, mockingly.

The first debate between Trump and Biden is scheduled for September 29. The two subsequent ones will take place on October 15 and 22.
