TEHRAN (Iran News) – The US assassination of the top Iranian commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani was condemned by different countries.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said the US airstrike on Baghdad airport is an act of aggression on Iraq and a breach of its sovereignty that will lead to war in Iraq, the region, and the world.

The strike also violated the conditions of US military presence in Iraq and should be met with legislation that safeguards Iraq’s security and sovereignty, he added.

“The vicious attack on Baghdad international airport last night is an insolent breach of Iraqi sovereignty and international agreements. It led to the killing of several commanders who defeated Daesh terrorists,” Iraq’s top Shia cleric, Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani’s office said in a statement.

“These events and more indicate the country is heading toward very difficult times. We call on all concerned parties to behave with self-restraints and act wisely,” he said.

Iraq’s Speaker of Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi condemned the US airstrike in Baghdad that killed Iran’s most powerful general and a top Iraqi militia commander as a breach of sovereignty.

“Yesterday’s targeting of a military commander in Iraq’s armed forces near Baghdad international airport is a flagrant breach of sovereignty and violation of international agreements,” he said in a statement.

Syria will not forget Soleimani

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that he received the news “with great sorrow”.

Assad said that “the martyr Soleimani died while serving his country and the axis of resistance. The Syrian people will not forget Soleimani’s support for our side, defending Syria from terror.”

Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, says the American raid that killed top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad was “a blatant and flagrant act of assassination, aggression, and execution.”

Adventurist step

Russia said the United States assassination of the top Iranian commander was an “adventurist step” which will further increase tension in the Middle East.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the move “was an adventurist step that will increase tensions throughout the region.”

“Soleimani served the cause of protecting Iran’s national interests with devotion. We express our sincere condolences to the Iranian people,” said the ministry.

World “more dangerous”

France also reacted to the assassination of the Iranian commander, saying his killing has made the world “more dangerous.”

France’s Europe Minister, Amelie de Montchalin, said on Friday, “We have woken up to a more dangerous world.”

“In such operations, when we can see an escalation is underway, but what we want above all is stability and de-escalation,” Montchalin added.

According to her, President Emmanuel Macron would soon consult with “players in the region.”

“All of France’s efforts… in all parts of the world aim to ensure that we are creating the conditions for peace or at least stability,” she added.

Avoid further escalating tensions

Meanwhile, China called on “the relevant sides, especially the United States, to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid further escalating tensions.”

“China has always opposed the use of force in international relations,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang.

The leader of the main opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, urged Britain to “stand up to the belligerent actions and rhetoric coming from the United States.

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab called on all parties to de-escalate.

“Following his death, we urge all parties to de-escalate. Further conflict is in none of our interests,” he said in an emailed statement.

The commander’s assassination affected world markets; the price of oil surged more than four percent and European stocks fell at the start of trading on Friday.

“All hinges now on how Iran responds,” said Jason Tuvey, senior emerging markets economist at Capital Economics in London.

“There is obviously a concern that this could call for confrontation in the region,” he added.

Lebanon’s reaction

Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry on Friday called for the country and wider region to be spared any repercussions from the US airstrike that killed the Iranian commander.

The ministry also condemned the killing, calling it a violation of Iraqi sovereignty and a dangerous escalation against Iran.

Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Friday the US airstrike in Baghdad will increase insecurity and instability in the region.

In a written statement, the ministry said that it was deeply concerned by the rising tensions between the United States and Iran and that turning Iraq into an area of conflict will harm peace and stability in the region.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, IRGC, Major General Hossein Salami highlighted Iran’s military power to counter foreign threats and said although the country does not want conflicts, it is not afraid of war.

Iran’s power is so great that all countries know regional problems cannot be resolved without the Islamic Republic power of counter, IRGC commander, General Salami, said, addressing a conference in the southwestern city of Ahvaz on Thursday.

He further pointed to the US hostilities toward the Iranian nation and said, “They have besieged us with economic, industrial, and scientific sanctions to keep us dependent but our nation has resisted with divine guidance…”

“Iran is on the right track and a testimony to our power is that the US blames Iran wherever it faces defeat…,” the IRGC commander said, referring to the US officials’ recent claims that Iran has encouraged the ongoing protests in Iraq decrying US airstrikes against Popular Mobilization Units (also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi).

“We do not interfere in countries’ internal affairs,” he said, adding, “This hatred against the US is pervasive all over the world.”

“We do not lead the country to war, but we are not afraid of any war, and we are telling America to use a proper language in the face of the Iranian nation,” Major General Salami went on to say.

US officials, including President Donald Trump, are trying to accuse Iran of encouraging the protests underway in Iraq decrying US airstrikes against Hashd al-Sha’abi.

On Sunday, US forces conducted drone strikes on a number of Kata’ib Hezbollah bases in Iraq’s western Anbar province, killing at least 28 individuals and leaving another 51 injured.

Kata’ib Hezbollah is part of Hashd al-Sha’abi.

Following the strikes, the Pentagon issued a statement saying that it had targeted three locations of the Iraqi fighters in Iraq and two in Syria in response to alleged attacks targeting American forces.

Angered by the US air raids, Iraqi protesters stormed its embassy compound in the high-security Green Zone in Baghdad on Tuesday, setting fires and chanting: “Death to America!”

They also demanded the removal of American troops from Iraq.

Reacting to the attack, Trump on Tuesday held Iran “fully responsible” for the incident on Twitter and added that the protesters “will be held fully responsible.”

In a separate statement, Trump later also threatened that Tehran would “pay a very big price” after the attack.

On Wednesday, Iran summoned the Swiss charge d’affaires, whose country represents US interests in Iran, to protest “warmongering” remarks by American officials.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman hit back at the US for its accusations against Iran, following recent protests in Iraq, calling on the White House to quit its destructive regional policies in Middle East.

In a statement on Tuesday, Abbas Mousavi dismissed the “bogus” allegations that the American officials have made against Iran over the recent developments in Iraq and called US initiatives as destructive regional policies.

“The surprising impudence of the American authorities is at such a level that after slaughtering at least 25 people, wounding many Iraqi people, inflicting financial damages on Iraq and violating the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, they (Americans) are now blaming the Islamic Republic of Iran for the protests from the Iraqi people against their own ferocious measures in a blatant and cheap act of pinning the blame on others,” Mousavi said.

Such allegations leveled by the US amount to an insult to the people of Iraq, the Iranian spokesman said, asking the US officials how and with what logic they expect the Iraqi nation to remain silent about such extensive crimes.

“On the one hand, the Americans have ignored the Iraqi nation’s liberality and pursuit of independence, and on the other hand, they have forgotten their role in supporting Saddam and in creating Daesh and the consequent massacre and depredation of the Iraqi people, and have apparently failed to remember that they are still deemed by the people of Iraq to be ‘occupiers’,” the spokesman added.

He went on to dismiss the accusations and, warning Washington against showing any thoughtless and wrong reaction in their calculations, called on the White House to reconsider its destructive policies on the region.

On Sunday, US forces conducted drone strikes on a number of Kata’ib Hezbollah bases in Iraq’s western Anbar province, killing at least 25 individuals and leaving another 51 injured, according to the PMU (Popular Mobilization Units).

Following the strikes, the Pentagon issued a statement saying that it had targeted three locations of the Iraqi fighters in Iraq and two in Syria in response to alleged attacks targeting American forces.

Kata’ib Hezbollah is part of the PMU. The PMU, also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi, played a key role in defeating the Daesh terrorist group that had occupied parts of Iraq since 2014.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – China’s foreign minister decried international “bullying practices” while meeting with his Iranian counterpart Tuesday, in the country’s latest criticism of US foreign policy.

Wang Yi reaffirmed the strength of bilateral relations in opening remarks at the beginning of talks with Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The Iranian minister’s visit follows a trip to close ally Russia and comes just after the first-ever drills among the navies of the three countries in the northern part of the Indian Ocean.

“We need to stand together against unilateralism and bullying practices,” Wang said.

China was a signatory to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and has strongly criticized the US for abandoning it in favor of a campaign of heightened diplomatic and economic pressure.

He said China will firmly safeguard international fairness and justice and promote the political solution to the Iran nuclear issue.

“The Chinese side supports all constructive efforts that help ease the current tension and uphold the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” Wang said.

He said the United States has withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal and taken a maximum pressure tactic against Iran, which was to blame for the current tension of the Iran nuclear issue.

China will firmly defend international fairness and justice, oppose unilateralism and bullying, and work to promote a political and diplomatic settlement of the Iran nuclear issue, Wang said.

Without directly mentioning the US, Wang said China and Iran would stand up for their national interests as well as “uphold multilateralism and norms governing international relations.”

Zarif responded that the two countries were united in, “common effort to fight unilateralism and to promote multilateralism” in 2020.

Speaking highly of the important role China has played in safeguarding the Iran nuclear deal, Zarif said the Iranian side is willing to work with the Chinese side to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to a new level.

“We need to keep up regular bilateral consultations on a variety of issues and this trip serves that purpose,” he added.

Zarif further hailed China for supporting Iran’s stance on the international stage.

The 2015 deal between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program. The US withdrew from the accord in 2018 and imposed crippling economic sanctions that block Iran from selling crude oil abroad.

In response to the US sanctions, Iran has pressured the European signatories to find a way to limit the impact on the Iranian economy. Tehran has slowly decreased its compliance with the terms of the deal a year after the US withdrawal.

Iran’s moves have been condemned by Western governments as unwelcome and escalating tensions in the region, while Russia and China have repeatedly blamed the US.

The four-day naval exercise, launched from the southeastern port city of Chabahar in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, underscores the informal alliance among China, Iran, and Russia in the face of President Donald Trump’s moves to withdraw the US from international agreements.

AP, Xinhua and Press TV contributed to this story.

“The US deplorable military attacks against the Iraqi soil and forces is a clear sign of terrorism,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Monday.

Mousavi urged the United States to respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq and stop its interferences in the country.

Noting that Washington’s claims on the fight against terrorism are nothing but a big lie, Mousavi said, “Such assaults, once again, disproved the US’ claim on fighting the ISIL terrorist group in Iraq.”

“The US has in fact targeted the positions of the forces that have been fighting terrorists and have inflicted severe damages upon them through the past years,” he added.

The spokesman reiterated that such a move shows the US’ undeniable support to terrorism, calling on the American regime to take responsibility for its illegal measures.

He expressed the Islamic Republic’s support to Iraq’s independence and territorial integrity and commiserated with the families of the victims of the heinous attack.

The US forces launched deadly airstrikes against Kata’ib Hezbollah bases, which is part of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), on Sunday night, claiming that the attacks have been in response to alleged attacks targeting US and coalition forces.

According to PMU, the attacks have left at least 25 individuals martyred and another 51 injured. The targeted Kata’ib Hezbollah forces belonged to brigades 45 and 46 of the PMU, according to PMU official Jawad Kazim al-Rabi’awi.

The attack has been widely condemned by different Iraqi figures.

The Soumar-Mandali border crossing between Kermanshah and Diyali provinces has several times been closed and opened which resulted in high-density traffic of trucks which carried exported goods from Iran to Iraq.

“The United States said about corresponding measure at the meeting, as we have said we have nothing to lose and we are ready to respond to any corresponding measure that the US chooses,” said its state news agency KCNA citing a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Global Arms sales rose by nearly 5% in 2018 in a market dominated by the United States, according to a new report published Monday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The turnover of the 100 biggest arms manufacturers came to $420 billion, thanks in large part to the US market, said the report. US manufacturers alone accounted for 59% of the market, or a turnover of $246 billion, up 7.2% on the previous year.

“This is a significant increase over one year considering the already high levels of US combined arms sales,” Aude Fleurant, the director of SIPRI’s arms transfers and military expenditure program, told AFP. These firms were benefitting from the Trump administration’s decision to modernize its armed services to reinforce its position against China and Russia.

Russia was second in the rankings for arms production, with 8.6% of the market, just ahead of the United Kingdom on 8.4% and France on 5.5%. The study did not include China, for which there was insufficient data, but SIPRI’s research estimated that there were between three and seven Chinese businesses in the top 100 arms manufacturers.

Two major European companies, Airbus and MBDA were also responding to “demand due to ongoing armed conflicts and severe tensions in several regions”, Fleurant added.

China has spent 1.9% of its gross domestic product on defense every year since 2013. The top-ranked Russian firm, Almaz-Antei, jumped to ninth on the list with a turnover of $9.6 billion — 18% up on the previous year.

“This increase was based not only on strong domestic demand but also on continuing growth in arms sales to other countries, in particular exports of the S-400 air defense system,” said the report. One of the buyers of this system is NATO member Turkey, which took the deal despite a US threat of sanctions.

Turkey’s arms industry had two businesses in the top 100 and turnover of $2.8 billion, up 22% on the previous year. Turkey was “driven by the goal of being self-sufficient in arms supply and therefore develop arms production capabilities in all segments (land systems, air systems, naval systems, missiles, etc.),” said Fleurant.

“Turkey is also involved with an enduring armed conflict with the Kurds, which also tends to increase demand for arms,” she added.

The world’s largest arms maker remains the US firm Lockheed Martin, as it has been since 2009, this last year with a turnover of $47.3 billion. Its sales alone account for 11% of the world market.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – International organizations need to speak out and break the silence about US economic sanctions that target Iran’s food and medicine on top of the economy, an Iranian minister has said, warning of the adverse consequences of the embargoes.

“The brave Iranian people are being victimized by plots and economic sanctions that have been imposed by the US administration,” Iran’s Minister of Health and Medical Education Saeed Namaki said in a letter to Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday, Press TV reported.

Iranians, he added, have been the target of the severe restrictions that have badly affected imports of food, medicine, and medical equipment.

The Iranian minister said Washington claims such sanctions do not include medicine, medical equipment, and food, and they are meant to suspend exchanges in international banking systems. However, he argued, the behavior that the White House has adopted only goes in line with its efforts to intentionally stop imports of essential goods for the needy.

The minister emphasized that major obstacles put by the US in the way of Iran’s import of medicine and medical equipment have had a negative impact on the treatment of many Iranian patients.

“By imposing sanctions on the Iranian people, the US has not only committed economic terrorism but in practice, it has carried out a crime against humanity,” Namaki said.

As the main organization in charge of providing universal public health coverage, WHO must not remain indifferent to this important issue, the Iranian minister said.

He added that officials of the United Nations must be held accountable for the adoption of measures in violation of law.

Human Rights Watch said in October that American sanctions against Iran have drastically constrained the country’s ability to pay for humanitarian imports and are threatening the health rights of Iranians.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal last year and reimposed sanctions as part of a stated campaign of “maximum pressure” against the Islamic Republic.

Officially, the sanction regime makes exceptions for food, medicine, and other humanitarian goods, but most companies are unwilling to do any trade with Iran for fear of repercussions in the world’s largest economy.

This is while the United States insists that medicines and humanitarian goods are exempt from sanctions. The restrictions on trade have made many banks and companies across the world hesitant to do business with Iran, fearing punitive measures from Washington. The country is cut off from the international banking system.

Official reports say Iran produces some 95% of the basic medicines it needs and even exports some of the production to neighboring countries.

But when it comes to more sophisticated medication and medicines for costly and rare illnesses and medical equipment, Iran depends heavily on imports. And though the state provides health care for all, many treatments needed for complicated cases are simply not available.

In May, the Academy of Medical Sciences of Iran wrote a letter of complaint to the UN in this regard.

In the letter, addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the academy’s President Alireza Marandi mentioned a previously written complaint in condemnation of the “unjust” sanctions.

Regardless of how the House of Representatives’ impeachment hearings into President Donald Trump ends, some Ukrainian-Americans believe their ancestral homeland has already become an unwitting victim of tumultuous US politics.

“I think Ukraine is kind of a victim of US politics in this case because I believe they were pushed to do something that is not in the real Ukrainian interest,” said Igor Yarmak, 63, a tech professional in New York City who has voted Republican in the past but dislikes Trump. Iran News quotes the story.

The inquiry into whether Trump misused US foreign policy to ask Ukraine to target a domestic political opponent enters a critical phase on Wednesday when Congress holds its first public, televised hearings to question witnesses.

Others among the roughly 1 million people of Ukrainian descent living in the United States also expressed frustration at seeing Ukraine, which largely depends on foreign aid and protection from Russia, dragged into the impeachment fight.

“Once again, Ukraine is in the spotlight for its critical position in eastern Europe and I feel it’s being used by political powers for their own gain,” said Paul Jablonsky, a small business owner and the president of the Ukrainian American Community Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The inquiry comes three years into Trump’s unconventional presidency and as Democrats and Trump’s Republicans are gearing up for a brutal election battle.

Democrats are investigating whether there are grounds to impeach Trump over his July 25 request, in a phone call to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, that the latter investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a key political rival to Trump in 2020.

That call prompted a whistleblower complaint that led congressional Democrats to launch the probe into whether Trump abused his power by withholding nearly $400 million in security assistance to Ukraine to pressure the vulnerable US ally.

“(It is) really disheartening if it does come to pass that President Trump has been using his individual influence as president to further his political ambitions for the next election,” said 59-year-old Jablonsky, who considers himself an independent and agrees with Trump politically on issues including trade.

There are large populations of Ukrainian-Americans in Pennsylvania and Minnesota, which are seen as competitive in next year’s presidential election.

“Trump putting the screws and the pressure on Ukraine, which is the victim of US politics … to extort and grind a poor fledgling democracy, it’s beyond the pale of understanding,” said Ulana Mazurkevich, a business owner from the Philadelphia area and a Democrat who declined to give her age.

Ukraine’s Zelensky, a comedian and, like Trump, a political novice, won a landslide election victory in April promising voters an end to a conflict with Russian-backed forces in the Donbas region that has killed 13,000 people.

He has been walking a diplomatic tightrope to maintain good relations with both US political sides whose bipartisan support Ukraine counts on for aid and diplomatic cover against Russia following Moscow’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula in 2014.

“He might appear as a weak leader because he was trying to play ball with Trump or he was trying to avoid playing ball with Trump,” said Irina Medvinskaya, a US citizen who was born in Kyiv and emigrated to the United States at age 15.

But Medvinskaya, a Democrat, voiced hope that Ukraine could play a historic role if Trump were to be impeached and removed from office.

“If this becomes the death of him, I will be very proud of my motherland.”
