Maximum Pressure to Continue Regardless of Elections Outcome

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The US Special Representative for Iran and Venezuela claimed that Washington’s so-called ‘maximum pressure’ policy against Iran will continue regardless of the upcoming presidential elections.

“No matter who will be the next president, the US’ maximum pressure policy on Iran will continue,” Elliott Abrams said in an interview with London-based Saudi newspaper, Asharq Al-Awsat.

While claiming that Donald Trump’s “defeat” in the upcoming election is “the last hope for the Iranians” to end the US pressure campaign, he said, Washington is preparing for a new sanctions package against Tehran in the current month.

Pointing to the possible scenarios for the US presidential election’s outcome, Abrams said that some in Iran think that if Trump loses, the sanctions and the US pressure campaign on them will end as if it were written down, but this is a false belief and will never happen.

“We have a wide range of sanctions. These sanctions will remain in place until we see Iran change its behavior, now whoever the next president wants to be.”

The US official, like the president, claimed that if Trump wins the election again, the Iranians would move quickly to sign a new deal on the nuclear program “because they can no longer withstand such pressure for the next four years.”

Abrams also denied any contact with Tehran, saying that Iranian officials have no real desire to talk.

EU Slams US Sanctions Policy

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The diplomatic chief of EU on Friday attacked the US over its use of economic sanctions while citing Iran as one of the victims of the American policy after Washington opened the way to measures over Russia’s controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, said Washington’s secondary sanctions on those doing business with its foes were hitting European companies carrying out “legitimate business”, AFP reported.

He pointed to sanctions on Iran, Cuba, and the International Criminal Court, saying the EU opposed the US policy of enforcing its measures against companies and individuals around the world.

“I am deeply concerned at the growing use of sanctions, or the threat of sanctions, by the United States against European companies and interests. We have witnessed this developing trend in the cases of Iran, Cuba, the International Criminal Court, and most recently the Nord Stream 2 and Turk Stream projects,” Borrell said in a statement.

“Where common foreign and security policy goals are shared, there is great value in the coordination of targeted sanctions with partners.

“Where policy differences exist, the European Union is always open to dialogue. But this cannot take place against the threat of sanctions.”

Borrell’s statement comes just two days after US President Donald Trump’s administration moved to include Nord Stream 2 in tough measures that can include severing access to the US financial system.

Germany is a major player in the pipeline project, which will nearly double Russian gas shipments to Europe’s largest economy.

The US move means German companies will suffer sanctions for even small investments.

US maximum pressure on Iran has no positive effect

According To Iran News, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said that the US maximum pressure on Iran has not had any positive effect.

In a Monday tweet, Ulyanov wrote, “US claims that its maximum pressure policy on Iran is effective. Yes, results are very clear: increased tension in the P.Gulf, suffering of people in #Iran, reduced commitments of Tehran under #JCPOA, weakened non- proliferation regime.”

“But is there anything positive? No answer,” he added.

Following the unilateral withdrawal of Iran from the JCPOA, Iran tried to maintain the nuclear deal on the condition that other parties to the agreement comply with their commitments to the deal, but after a lapse of nearly two years and European parties’ failure to uphold commitments to preserve Iran’s economic benefits, Iran began steps to reduce its commitments over a 60-day period.

Maximum pressure failing against JCPOA strength

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Iranian President’s Office said the United States’ enmity with the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) is the clearest proof of Washington’s anti-Iran characteristic, noting that, however, the US maximum pressure campaign has failed to break the historic pact apart.

“The JCPOA has been a major obstacle to anti-Iranian sentiments for several years now, as all conspiracies have been made to destroy the deal,” Mahmoud Vaezi wrote on his Twitter late on Wednesday.

“Enmity with the nuclear deal is the most obvious anti-Iran characteristic of the US in the region and the world,” he said.

“What else can Trump say and what else can Washington do to stop some delusions and realize that the current US administration is the great enemy of JCPOA?” Vaezi added.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled Washington out of the JCPOA in May 2018 and reimposed “toughest ever” sanctions against the Islamic Republic in defiance of global criticism.

In response to the unilateral move, as well as the European signatories’ failure to safeguard Iran’s economic interests in the face of US sanctions, Tehran rowed back on its nuclear commitments step-by-step in compliance with Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA but stressed that its retaliatory measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the mutual trade from the US sanctions.

On Sunday, the New York Times reported that Washington was seeking to claim that the US has not quit the Iran nuclear deal to technically remain a “participant state,” in order to use a mechanism embedded within the accord to make the UN-imposed an arms embargo on Tehran.

Later on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed in a news briefing that the US will not allow Iran to purchase conventional arms after UN sanctions expire in October.

“We’re not going to let that happen,” Pompeo alleged.

“We will work with the UN Security Council to extend that prohibition on those arms sales and then in the event, we can’t get anyone else to act, the United States is evaluating every possibility about how we might do that.”

This way, the US aims to invoke a “snapback” in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to restore sanctions, lifted after the internationally-backed accord was reached during the President Barrack Obama administration.

Rouhani: US maximum pressure ineffective

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that the US maximum pressure against Iran has failed and sanctions will be ineffective.

“20 months have passed since the US sanctions and maximum pressure. Our situation has become better in the past 6 months and the maximum pressure has failed,” Rouhani told a press conference.

He added, “Our domestic condition is our unity. They wanted to make the people believe that we cannot live without an agreement with the United States. Nobody in the country has this belief.”

Elsewhere, he said, “They thought they could bring us to the negotiating table in a state in which we are weak by the maximum pressure. Such a thing is not possible.”

‘We will force enemy come to the negotiating table’

Rouhani also said that Iran will continue its path powerfully and finally will force the enemy to come to the negotiating table.

“Today, they ask for negotiation, however, they must return to a fair situation,” he noted.

He added, “So, our path will be resistance and progress.”

Elsewhere, Rouhani noted that it does not matter which party will take the helm at the White House and what is important is “national interests”.

“The United States must forget unilateralism and must also forget it is the leader of the world. If it respects these two factors and values legal governments and all the nations, we can pass problems,” he noted.

‘We still insist on Hormuz peace initiative’

Rouhani also said that all the regional countries must enjoy security and Iran still insists on the Hormuz peace initiative.

“It is obvious to the world that there will be no peace in this region without the involvement of Iran. Regional stability will only be possible with the involvement of an important and powerful country like Iran,” he said.

‘We have no unsolvable problem with Saudi Arabia’

Rouhani also said that Iran has “no unsolvable” problem with Saudi Arabia.

“We have always said that we have no complicated and unsolvable problem with Saudi Arabia and the issues between the two countries can be discussed whenever Saudi Arabia is ready,” he stated.

‘People could be informed about the Ukrainian plane crash earlier’

Rouhani also said that the people could be informed earlier about the Ukrainian passenger plane crash which was mistakenly shot down on January 8.

He praised the armed forces’ apology for the incident.

Rouhani: US knows its maximum pressure has failed

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday America’s “maximum pressure” campaign has failed and that the US has accepted its failure.

“Enemies of the Iranian people may not admit it, but have accepted that the strategy of maximum pressure has failed and must put aside such an approach against the Iranian nation,” Rouhani said in a meeting with the staff of Iran’s Intelligence Ministry.

Rouhani said the Iranian nation “made a great sacrifice” in the face of US sanctions and managed to offset “the ill-wishers’ maximum pressure”.

He said all governmental entities, braches of power, and the armed forces acted with great coordination and effort since the US withdrew from a multilateral nuclear deal with Iran last year in May and reimposed tough sanctions on the Islamic Republic that were lifted under the agreement.

“This path must continue to the point where enemies are completely disappointed with their maximum pressure,” the president said.

“The Iranian nation has shown that it is vigilant and well aware of the root causes of pressures and difficulties,” he said.

In return, the authorities could thank the nation by working to safeguard Iran, its Islamic establishment and the country’s national interests and by offering efficient services to people, he added.

Rouhani said Iran’s major economic indicators have improved in recent months despite America’s “unprecedented hostility”.

“Despite the unprecedented difficulties and hostilities towards the Iranian nation, there has been a rise in major economic indexes in recent months,” Rouhani said.

He also hailed the Intelligence Ministry for its “prominent role” in maintaining safety and security for investment and businesses.

Tension has risen between longtime foes Tehran and Washington since last year when US President Donald Trump quit the 2015 nuclear pact.

The US, as part of President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign, has been seeking to cripple Iran’s economy through what Washington refers to as “toughest ever” sanctions.

The campaign, which began in May 2018 after Trump abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, has witnessed several rounds of sanctions that specifically targeted Tehran’s oil exports and sought, unsuccessfully, to bring them to zero.

In retaliation for the US “maximum pressure” policy, Iran has gradually reduced its commitments to the pact and plans to go further if the European parties to the deal fail to keep their promises to shield Iran’s economy from US sanctions.
