The rockets, which were fired late on Sunday, landed close to the US diplomatic mission, causing sirens blaring within the compound without any casualties apart from some material damage. The rockets reportedly hit a residential complex inside the Green Zone, damaging buildings and cars, but causing no casualties.

Immediately after the rocket launch, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used the opportunity to accuse Iran of being behind the attack by a statement published in the press service of the US State Department and also in a later tweet.

“Iran-backed militias once again flagrantly and recklessly attacked in Baghdad, wounding Iraqi civilians,” he claimed in a tweet, adding that “The people of Iraq deserve to have these attackers prosecuted. These violent and corrupt criminals must cease their destabilizing actions.”

Pompeo’s claims about civilian casualties come as Saberin News reported that the defense systems of the US embassy has inflicted damage on residential areas of the Green Zone.

Interior Ministry of Tunisia said two assailants on a motorbike blew themselves up outside the US embassy in the Lac district on Friday, adding that that attack also wounded five police officers, while a civilian sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, state news agency TAP reported that the blast claimed the life of one policeman.

“We heard a very powerful explosion … We saw the remains of the terrorist lying on the ground after he went on the motorbike toward the police,” Amira, a shopkeeper, told Reuters.

Following the attack, roads around security installations were sealed in some parts of the capital, and some international institutions were put on lockdown or evacuated.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion. But Tunisia has been hit by a number of deadly attacks by Takfiri terrorists in the past. Last summer, Daesh claimed responsibility for blasts that hit Tunis over the course of a week, including one near the French Embassy that killed a policeman.

“After achieving the intended aim, we pulled out from US Embassy triumphantly,” Fadhil al-Gezzi, one of the Iraqi protesters, told AP.

“We rubbed America’s nose in the dirt,” he added.

Helicopters of US Marines had arrived overnight to help guard the main area of the embassy complex. US forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters.

On Sunday, US forces conducted drone strikes on a number of Kata’ib Hezbollah bases in Iraq’s western Anbar province, killing at least 25 individuals and leaving another 51 injured, according to the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).

Following the strikes, the Pentagon issued a statement saying that it had targeted three locations of the Iraqi fighters in Iraq and two in Syria in response to alleged attacks targeting American forces.

Kata’ib Hezbollah is part of the PMU. The PMU, also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi, played a key role in defeating the Daesh terrorist group that had occupied parts of Iraq since 2014.

“The seizure of the Den of Espionage by the students following the line of Imam proved that wherever the US is present, there would be discord, turmoil, and protest,” the Army said in the statement released on Sunday evening, referring to the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran.

“One of the reasons why our dear Iranian’s security and that of our country today has become exemplary to enemies’ dismay, is the absence of the American embassy in Tehran,” it added.

US officials have made numerous attempts to reopen their embassy in recent years in order to sow discord among the Iranian people, the Army said.

“Today, more than ever, it has been proven that regional policies of the US have failed,” it stated, adding that White House leaders are pursuing their goals through sowing discords and waging civil war.

“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are vigilant enough to counter any destructive move by the enemy to undermine (the country’s) security and peace… and never make light of the security of the people,” the statement read.

On Monday, the Iranian people, mostly students, took part in nationwide rallies to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran and condemn the US policies against the Islamic Republic.

In Tehran, demonstrators marked the anniversary of the landmark move at the venue of the former US embassy, which is known by Iranians as the “Den of Espionage”.

Ralliers also chanted slogans against the US, the Israeli regime and arrogant powers plotting against Iran.

On November 4, 1979, and in less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution that toppled a US-backed monarchy, Iranian university students who called themselves “students following the line of (the late) Imam (Khomeini)” seized the US embassy in Tehran, which had become a center of espionage and planning to overthrow the newly established Islamic system in Iran.

The students who seized the embassy later published documents proving that the compound was indeed engaged in plans and measures to overthrow the Islamic Republic.

Every year on the 13th day of the Iranian month of Aban (which this year falls on November 4), the Iranian nation, particularly students, hold rallies across the country to mark the day.
