TEHRAN (Iran News) – US congress and Trump administration officials have reached an agreement on a massive economic stimulus bill to alleviate the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak, White House official Eric Ueland said early on Wednesday.

“We have a deal,” Ueland told reporters after days of negotiations on the package, expected to be worth $2 trillion.

The Senate’s Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, was expected to speak on the Senate floor shortly about the agreement.

The text of the pact was not expected to be available until later on Wednesday.

US Congress Democratic leader Sen Schumer said the coronavirus bill provides over $130 billion to aid hospitals. He added that $150 billion provided to aid state and local governments, Reuters reported.

The package had been expected to include a $500 billion fund to help hard-hit industries and a comparable amount for direct payments of up to $3,000 to millions of US families, as well as $350 billion for small-business loans, $250 billion for expanded unemployment aid and $75 billion for hospitals.

It aims to cushion the economic blow from a pandemic that has killed more than 660 people in the United States and sickened more than 50,000, shuttered thousands of businesses, thrown millions out of work and led states to order 100 million people — nearly a third of the population — to stay at home.

The money at stake in the stimulus legislation exceeds what the US government spends on national defense, scientific research, highway construction, and other discretionary programs.

An email from Charles Johnson, a partner with the UAE-hired Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP lobby group, that was sent the week after the House of Representatives passed its own sanctions legislation on Turkey seeks to drum up support within the vital Senate Foreign Relations Committee for the chamber to follow suit.

“Andrew & Matt – I am reaching out on behalf of our client, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, to underscore the UAE’s condemnation of Turkish aggression in Syria and support for sanctions measures against Turkey such as the House-passed ‘Protect Against Conflict by Turkey Act’,” Johnson wrote in the missive obtained through the Justice Department’s Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) website.

“I hope this information is helpful as you continue to monitor developments in Syria, and as the Senate considers potential sanctions measures,” he added in the correspondence dated November 7.

The recipients are not clear, however, as their email addresses do not appear in the document. But the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Chief Democratic Counsel is Andrew Keeler while the Republican’s chief lawyer is Matthew Sullivan, according to the Al-Monitor website, which first reported the lobbying effort.

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer is one of over a dozen UAE lobby firms the Emiratis have under contract, in this case trying to pushing to impose sanctions on Turkey, according to al-Monitor.

Neither the majority or minority on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee responded to emails and a telephone call from Anadolu Agency. The UAE’s Washington embassy also did not reply to a request for comment.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Not long after the US-Turkish agreement on Syria, approval of the Armenian Genocide in the US Congress caused a new crisis in the relations of Ankara-Washington.

The issue of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman is perhaps the most sensitive issue in Turkish foreign policy, which has been used at various times by different Western countries as a leverage of pressure on obstacles in Turkey-US.

Although many Western countries have already adopted similar bills in their parliaments regarding the Armenian Genocide and Turkey has repeatedly objected to this issue, the US Congress’s approval at the present time is considered as an attempt to use it as leverage on Turkey.

Turkish officials have also reacted strongly to the adoption of the Armenian Genocide bill in the US Congress on Tuesday.

Considering a political shameful decision made by US Congress, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that this decision is of no value to our government and our people.

Emphasizing this decision irrelevant, he mentioned that a major plot in the region was foiled by Turkey’s Operation Peace Spring, and this issue caused the old cases to be resurrected again.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry in a statement also rejected a US congressional decision and resolution.

A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry declared that the resolution was adopted in terms of US domestic policy, adding that it lacks legal and historical bases.

Emphasizing the aforementioned approval of the US congress violates international law and even US domestic law, the statement mentioned that there is no law in the international legal system that defines the 1915 events as genocide and the event must be examined in the context of history in accordance with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights.

Referring to Turkey’s proposal for establishing a joint historical commission to investigate this issue in the year 2005, it added that the proposal was rejected by Armenia.

Chief advisor to the President of Turkey İbrahim Kalın also considered US congress resolution a political shameful decision.

Those accusing Turkey of genocide should first look at their history and their support to the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), he wrote on his Twitter account.

The Director of Communications at the Turkish Presidency Fakhreddin Alton also wrote on his Twitter account commenting on US congressional decision that the US Congress adoption and the threat of sanctioning Turkey contradict the spirit of the two countries’ strategic commitment.

Referring to the decision made by Turkey and US to increase the volume of their trade to $ 100 billion, he said that the US congressional approval comes at a time when the governments of the two countries are determined to increase the volume of trade to $ 100 billion and can disrupt US government policies.

Attempting to incite a NATO ally to support terrorist organizations is a strategic mistake and it cannot prevent Turkey from fighting with terrorist organizations and only damages the future of the two countries’ relations, he added.

According to observers, the resolution will be a serious issue in Turkish society in the coming days and weeks and would seriously undermine the obstacles in Turkey-US relations.

According to CNN, Trump did not name who he was attacking in Sunday’s tirade but earlier this week he referenced New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when the president was defending House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

A group of Democrats, who are women of color and have been outspoken about Trump’s immigration policies, last week condemned the conditions of border detention facilities. The group of women joining Ocasio-Cortez were Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.

Trump implied in the series of tweets that the congresswomen weren’t born in America and sarcastically suggested, “they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

Later Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter that the country she “come(s) from” and “swears to” is the US and suggested that Trump is “angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us.”

“You rely on a frightened America for your plunder,” the New Yorker wrote in a tweet.

Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Pressley are natural-born US citizens, while Omar was born in Somalia and immigrated to the US when she was young. Omar became a citizen in 2000 when she was 17 years old, according to the New York Times.

Trump’s tweets come as interest in the conditions of detention centers housing migrants has risen sharply and raids to round up undocumented immigrants are being conducted Sunday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in multiple major cities across the nation.

Omar, responding to the Trump’s attacks on Sunday, threw punches at him in a pair of tweets, writing that “As Members of Congress, the only country we swear an oath to is the United States.”

“Which is why we are fighting to protect it from the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen,” Omar wrote, adding that Trump is “stoking white nationalism” because he is “angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.”

Tlaib and Pressley also hit back at Trump on Twitter, with Tlaib saying she is “fighting corruption” in the US “every day when I hold your (administration) accountable as a US Congresswoman,” and Pressley saying the tweets are “what racism looks like.”

“WE are what democracy looks like. And we’re not going anywhere. Except back to DC to fight for the families you marginalize and vilify everyday,” Pressley wrote in a tweet.

Trump continued his attacks on the progressive House members Sunday evening, claiming they “speak so badly of our country.” In a pair of tweets, he said he was sad to see Democrats sticking up for the House members, and that he looked forward to the 2020 election if they continue with this strategy.

Meanwhile, in a later tweet, Pelosi asked Trump to work with Congress for a “humane immigration policy” and to stop immigration raids.

The draft bill was introduced on February 14 by member of the House of Representatives from Hawaii Tulsi Gabbard, who wants to join the upcoming presidential race from the Democratic Party.

In October, US President Donald Trump announced his country’s intention to withdraw from the INF Treaty over Russia’s alleged violations of the agreement. Moscow has refuted the accusations, adding that Washington itself had violated the deal.

On February 2, the United States formally suspended its obligations under the INF Treaty and triggered the six-month withdrawal process. Washington has said it would terminate this procedure if Russia agreed to be compliant with the pact. Moscow has also suspended its participation in the treaty, with Russian President Vladimir Putin having instructed the country’s authorities not to initiate any new talks with Washington on the matter. Putin has, however, stressed that all of Russia’s earlier proposals remained on the table.

The INF Treaty was signed in 1987 by then-leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and then-US President Ronald Reagan. The leaders agreed to destroy all cruise or ground-launched ballistic missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (310 and 3,400 miles).

According to New York-based CoinDesk, a news site specializing in bitcoin and digital currencies, Rep. Mike Gallagher has submitted a bill to the US House of Representatives called ‘Blocking Iran Illicit Finance Act’, calling for imposition of sanctions against Iranian financial institutions and the development and use of Iranian digital currency.

The report adds that a corresponding bill was submitted in the Senate by Sen. Ted Cruz, calling for sanctions against those who knowingly provide Iran with funding, services or “technological support, used in connection with the development of Iranian digital currency.”

The move comes a month after the Trump administration reimposed sanctions on Iran’s banking and energy sectors following the US unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018.

Brigadier General Gholamreza Jalali, the head of Iran’s Passive Defense Organization, said in October that “cryptocurrencies are untraceable in the financial and monetary system” and as such, can help bypass certain sanctions.

Trump had previously said he would be “proud’ to shut down the government unless he received the $5 billion he is seeking to fund the construction of a barrier along the U.S.’s southern border, Anadolu reported.

According to Sputnik, funding for key government operations expired at 11:59:59 pm on 21 December (around 5:00 am GMT on 22 December). Earlier in the day, the Senate failed to reach a compromise over a House-passed bill and decided to adjourn until 22 December.

Building a wall on the US-Mexico border was one of Trump’s key promises throughout his presidential campaign. The US President believes that the wall will stop illegal migration, as well as human and drugs trafficking.

The Senate earlier this week passed a stopgap spending bill that would have funded through February the agencies that have shut down. But it did not include funding for Trump’s wall, and as it headed to the House, the president hastily called a meeting with its leaders, who tacked on to the bill the funds Trump is seeking, sending it back to the Senate for consideration, where it was dead on arrival.

The federal government previously closed twice this year. A three-day shutdown in January took place over a weekend and a February closure only lasted for a day. All three shutdowns this year involved disputes over immigration.
